Found some thread that sparked joy in th darkest corner of the yarn store today. So now I can make some green and peach patches too. And that green is a pretty perfect shade for lichen.
It's a puzzle that goes back to Archimedes. Not to be confused with the Tangram, a similar puzzle. The joke with the Stomachion is that there's hundreds of possibilities to put the 14 pieces into a square.
I thought that would make an interesting quilt block, or several hundred.
So I made a pattern here. 6mm (1/4") seam allowance, finished block should come out 36 cm (14,2"). The pattern has 12 pieces, including 3 that are double, marked in my photos above. The original Stomachion has 14 pieces, but some of those are always together, so I fused them for simplicity's sake.
Anybody wanna try it? I'd be very interested if it actually works, but I also have a lot of stuff going on right now. Also I'm not good enough at quilting yet.
Sorry not sorry to grannypost again but look at this amazing jacket she made me??? She wove it herself on her loom out of wool, silk, banana fibre and scraps of old cloth. The buttons are made of antler. It took her a year and a half and I love it! It’s not vegan, but it is handmade, largely local and very sustainable. It’s an item of clothing I have a personal connection to because of the story behind it, and it shows that reducing how much cotton and polyester we wear doesn’t have to mean drab or boring clothing. So it feels pretty solarpunk to me! Now to learn how to do this kind of thing myself…
everybody look at my cat in my lap as i was spinning
he had never done that before!!!! he just sat on my lap and fell asleep!!!
Fun fact! I drove 3 hours with my mom to get this spinning wheel. I have absolutely no idea how old she is but she was hand made by someones uncle. I call her Oma since that's whats etched into the lazy Kate that I also got from the nice old lady who sold it to me.
I have been working on this project for 8 years and it's FINALLY DONE!!!
Look. Look at my labor of 8 years. LOOK AT IT.
The pattern is Neat Ripple. I used Knit Picks Mighty Stitch in lots of various colors. If you'd like specific color names, let me know. I'm fairly certain the lighter orange is discontinued, named "Conch".
This is one of the more ambitious pieces I've done for a bit, and I did it on an absurd deadline, but my trans dragon back patch is done! The project ended up taking 130 hours of working time to finish, using two strands of cotton floss for both fills and outlines. The base pattern was from my own collection and was originally from 1936.
