I actually think about this a lot. I write for three main fandoms: Ninjago, Hetalia, and Red vs. Blue, and all three of them are vastly different writing experiences.
Hetalia was written by one Japanese dude as a pretty basic comedy with some interesting concepts. But it's pretty shallow. When writing, it's normal to just add traits and depth based on the premise more than actual characterization. Because the translation means the characters do feel pretty stilted and wonky on their own. The translation stuff means you have to take a lot of liberties.
Red vs. Blue was written in English, where the very specific character personalities are the point and main appeal. A good litmus test for writing Grif or Church is if you can imagine it being said in their voices, because the writing for that show hinges on dialogue that feels very real and natural, if absolutely absurd.
Ninjago, on the other hand? No fucking way. Most of the dialogue I write, I cannot imagine coming out of those characters. But that's because, in a way, Ninjago is written in another language. It's just that that "language" is "22 minute episodic kids show." There are compromises that a show has to make to be that, that gives it a certain vibe. When we write for it, or make content for it, we don't have the same "language" to adhere to, so we write what feels more natural and normal and fun. With Ninjago, it's less about following the source material, and more about following the vibes and premises of the characters once translated out of the "kids show" format. Even though the characters in the show would never say or do some of the things we have them do, it still manages to feel right, because it feels like something they would do once removed from their medium.
At least, that's how I see it. It's made for a very interesting and fun writing experience, and one that I think about a lot!
i love that in the ninjago fandom we truly are treating the characters like barbie dolls and doing our own shit with them. you can just completely ignore plot points or seasons and nobody gaf. sure give that character traits they don’t have in the show. yes those two obscure characters who’ve never met would be in love. tell me about your au where your favorite side character goes on a life changing adventure that never happens in canon. make up new lore about a species in the series. create new storylines for the characters. make new characters. it’s the wild west out here

Batman beyond is pretty good tho yeah DR rules
Maybe I'm exaggerating but… I think DR is the best case of "next generation" done right. Every time I see a media trying to do this for some reason there is a recurrence of disrespecting the previous generation, or shitting on previous characters in terms of writing to make the next generation look better. DR has none of that, and the way it integrates both old and new characters so that they still feel like part of the same (but now bigger) family is what makes it work for me.

HEY FANFIC WRITERS!!!
Really curious about something!
If someone is writing a fic that PROMINENTLY FEATURES a pairing of some kind, but IS NOT STRICTLY ROMANTIC, where whether it is platonic or romantic can be left up to interpretation, and the fic was written WITH THE INTENT of featuring that pairing (not intentionally being misleading with the tags), IS IT OKAY to use the / tag instead of the & tag? Like, if I write a fic with a certain ship, and it's just about how those two characters meet, with a heavy emphasis on their dynamic and character, but doesn't end with them explictly a couple, is it okay to tag with the / tag if the writer genuinely thinks it will appeal to that demographic of reader and isn't being misleading?
I'm thinking of this especially in terms of rarepairs, where someone just wants to see that dynamic more, even if it isn't romantic. Sometimes just filtering by those two characters will just yield works that happen to include both of them.
Basically, what matters more: Accuracy of the tag, or the target demographic?
This does NOT INCLUDE just including a tag for the sake of boosting visibility. (Tagging as a ship when the ship isn't truly present in the fic just for the sake of getting it seen)
The writer is not intending to deceive a reader into reading their fic; they genuinely believe someone searching for that pairing will be satisfied by their work.
reblog for more votes please!!! im really curious!

Oh my gosh injection molding is so cool! They're how Legos are made! Hence this going on my Ninjago blog lol. Legos are injection molded abs plastic! And are basically a miracle toy because 90 degree angles are almost fucking impossible to make! Much less with such perfect tolerances that are so consistently good!!!! Injection molding is super expensive to make molds for because you need to mill/CNC (computer numerically controlled, not the other thing) a block of solid metal to make it and that shit gets expensive fast. I think it's why kits with special parts are more expensive. But when something is mass-produced, it ends up being super profitable in the long-run!!! And is also just!!! Cool as hell!!!!

Who has dropped quarters in one of these babies and watched the miracle of plastic injection molding produce a hot souvenir for you while you wait?
Chicago's Brookfield Zoo or Museum of Science and Industry host a couple.

Tag that shit as ghost Cole and 99% of the time I will find it and reblog it.
Cole: how am I going to explain to my dad that I died?
Jay: bring some smelling salts... and a pillow! in case he faints.
Kai: no no no, just the smelling salts. the pillow will be too noticeable, he'll get suspicious.
Cole: I think he'll be suspicious when he notices that I'm transparent and green.

gestures widely and takes several steps backwards
come forth and make yourselves seen, ghost cole-ition. possession and dotd shall have their dues
I think there's a lot you can tell about a Ninjago fan based on what objectively mediocre season they're unhealthily obsessed with.
Like, obsessed in an "i know its bad writing but goddamn does it compel me" kinda way. In a "no one can talk shit about my fave but me" kinda way. In an "I deserve a PhD for how intensely I study this thing under a microscope" kinda way. In an "Im the only one who truly understands this story and its wasted potential, so im the only one capable of hating it correctly" kinda way.
What exactly does your favorite mid season say about you? Good question. But it sure does say Something.
