Sharing a work of independent scholarship I did back in 2017. When I wrote this literary analysis of XO Tour Llif3, I didn't think it would end up being cited on Wikipedia and downloaded over 800 times. I've gone on to do much denser work in other subjects and write about NFL football A LOT. For some reason, though, my best piece comes the one time I wrote about Soundcloud-era rap in a way people in academia could take seriously . Let me know what you guys think of it!

I did an initial listen through of Dead Prez' Turn Off the Radio 4: Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz. I wanted to listen to some dense political hip hop after digesting all the diss records we got lately. I'm going to go through a couple more spins, but my first take is that I MISS the days where mixtapes were rappers giving new interpretations of popular beats. I understand why those days are gone, but I long for them all the same. Contentwise, I forgot that we used to have super afrocentric rap and rappers. Encouragement and motivation all throughout the 19 track record. Gonna dive back in and spit out more thoughts soon.

I guess Rick Ross isn't gonna respond to The Game. Kind of sucks since Champagne Moments was a great track and I wanted more of Battle Bars Rozay.

I hope tumblr being invested in the Kendrick Lamar v. Drake drama will inspire more people to learn about hip hop culture and appreciate rap music more instead of doing that corny "I like everything but rap" shit. This shit genuinely has an entire interesting and complex history behind it. It's never just been about the music.

Are we ever gonna have another Master P or Birdman? Those men flooded the streets and gave multiple people jobs. No Limit and Cash Money Records will be remembered forever; but Master P and Baby dropped their own bangers, too, here and there. It seems like most guys choose between the office or the mic nowadays.

RXK Nephew raps the most chaotic bars I've ever heard in my life and I'm a HEAVY Lil B listener.

There's an alleged interview with a close friend of Kendrick Lamar going around on Twitter. The friend claimed that Kendrick is working on another album. Should the album be included in the battle? If not, is the album basically a victory lap?

I feel like the Drake vs. Kendrick beef was the first time in a long time where every hip hop radio station played new, nontraditional songs as soon as they came out and were relevant. The instant spins of every diss track (that was officially released) made rap radio feel like an active, live participant in the culture again. I could actually tune into my local hip hop station and hear the diss tracks and some contextual commentary around them. That was special.

"Up and Down" is a great cut from the deluxe version of Teezo Touchdown's How Do You Sleep at Night album. It shows off his '90s R&B influences perfectly. It's almost like an ode to the structure, lyricism, and tone of new jack swing's more mellow examples.

RXK Nephew can go for real. I just listened to a couple of his music videos and he reminds me of an east coast Lil B. Nephew is also prolific as a MF. When I was scrolling his YouTube channel, it felt like I was flicking my thumb for 10 minutes. Does this man ever stop rapping? Does he have a family? The digital streets need to know
