buzz has a basic enough routine, he's relaxed with it and he doesn't freak out if the routine is thrown out the window. in fact, he's probably the one throwing it out the window.

he doesn't like to feel restricted and he finds that a routine can do that to him.

buzz sees woody as a mentor. woody the the kind of golden guy that is just better. he once hated that about woody, found it annoying as hell. but once he saw the level in which woody had to step up in his personal life and work life, he came to respect the guy and admire how strong willed he is.

Nani remained sage-like as Buzz explained his plight. On the one hand, admitting that she was in a similar predicament was risky business. If this conversation was happening between anyone else, Nani might have been more wary. More likely to give vague advice with absolutely no reference to her own struggle. On the other hand, Buzz didn’t exactly seem the gossiping type, did he? And he was usually so put together that the fact that he had come to her in his time of need really said something. Plus, Tina Bell was involved. He was basically fucked.

She gave Buzz a sympathetic look, shook her head, and patted him on the shoulder. “Buzz… My dude. My guy. I don’t know how to break this to you lightly but… personal experience says she won’t. Ever. For all of time.”

he appreciated the fact that nani was being just as subtle as him in this conversation. no names mentioned about who it could be in her or his predicament, just the situation at hand. tian bell could be anywhere and he didn’t trust her not to be somewhere nearby waiting for him to slip up. 

buzz let out a sigh that had his lungs screaming for air at the end of it  “fuuuuuuuuuuck” he groaned in frustration “this is a fucking nightmare. how the hell do you handle this?”

“Haven’t you found them yet?” Tina asked, rather stupidly. For one, it may well have been confidential. Two, if they had, surely the whole town would have known by now, either by newspaper or gossipy Facebook posts. Really it was just concerning that the RHPD hadn’t made any known headway with any of the recent ‘disasters’ and given that Tina had fallen victim to a spiking before, she was indeed very worried that it could happen to her again.

But anyway! Time to move on to more positive things, like conducting an invasive interrogation of her own. RHPD might not get to the bottom of the case of Buzz and Jessie so easily, but Tina Bell sure would!

“Is there a reason you had to clarify that you’re friends, Buzz?” Tina smirked, leaning her hip against the counter and crossing her arms. “I’m her friend and I don’t have a key for general use.” (To be fair, that was a wise move on Jessie’s part.)

“well when your best friend iridessa is off screaming about a witch in the woods, and dragging police with her, we would be further forward” it had been frustrating him and the rest of the squad that they were going round in circles with everything that had been going on. 

“well when you’re interrogating me to why i’m here, there’s your answer” a logical one that he hoped tina would take and leave the topic be. this was buzz’s fourth mistake. tina bell left nothing alone. especially when it came to her close friends and pot stirring.

“that’s because you’re a fucking menace. you’d be using the key all the time to help yourself to snacks and causing a mess” he argued back “she doesn’t need that right now”

stepping foot in her home still felt alien to her after everything that had happened. she had spent so much time at the hospital and at woody’s place that she felt like a stranger in her own kitchen. 

as a thank you for looking out for her while woody was ill, jessie had messaged buzz to come over for dinner. it was the least she could do to thank him for everything. he’d been by her side the whole time and had even gone out of his way to restock her fridge and cupboards for her.

buzz’s head had been all over the place recently. the stress of running the station, looking out for the pride siblings, and life in general, had his head spinning. but jessie asking him over to dinner had sent his mind on overload. he had tried to play it suave and cool when she had extended the invitation, tried was the key word. a man spending the past hour trying on different shirts was not a man that was suave or cool. 

realising the time, he rushed out the door and made his way over to jessie’s. he smiled at her when she had opened the door, desperately trying squish down any feeling of a crush that he may have. 

“i’m hungry. i’m not sure how hungry, depends on how much you’ve made” he answered, making his way through to her kitchen and chuckled at the amount of food “you planning on feeding the prescient?”

ever since that day he was dropping off groceries to jessie’s house, he had a feeling that tina had him sussed. now he didn’t know what to do because he knew with tina came iridessa, and jessie soon followed. he couldn’t let news travel to jessie or worse, woody. 

through town gossip he he knew that nani was likely in the same predicament as him and in a last ditch attempt to save face, he reached out to her. 

“nani, i have no idea how to handle this. it’s stressing me out, i’m smoking like coal factory’s chimney here. how the fuck can i tell tina bell that she’s wrong and to leave something alone when we all know damn right she won’t”

“Christ…” Tina muttered, unable to hide the grimace that spread across her lips. She could certainly be all jokey about this sort of thing, but when reality set in, it really set in. The image of James lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to machines, after his… incident… flashed across her vision, an intrusive reminder that this was a horrible thing to fall witness to, wounds or not. Maybe she should be a little more sympathetic in future. “A-at least he’s awake though, right?”

Lighten the mood, Tina! Lighten the mood. Her stomach was turning at all these thoughts of hospitals and being spiked. The conversation simply had to move elsewhere (with big ol’ eye emojis) or she was going to start panicking or saying very, very stupid things against her better judgement.

“The last time you were here?” Tina asked, totally innocently. She sauntered over to the bag of groceries, taking a peek inside as Buzz unloaded everything. This was valuable intel. It was one thing for a neighbour to maybe help out with groceries once or twice, filling the bag with generic things like bread and milk. It was another when Tina noted there were things in that grocery back that Jessie was very specific about; foods she liked, snacks she would have picked up out of a line-up. “You got your own key or something?”

“yeah, he’s awake and he’s getting there. whoever did what they did at the carnival really did a number on him.” that much was obvious. woody was a unit of a human and for him to go down, it rattled people. seeing woody in the hospital freaked buzz out. not only was there the possibility of jessie losing her brother, but he could lose his best friend. the only thing that could’ve made the whole scenario worse was if jessie was there alongside woody. 

buzz eyed tina looking at the groceries and was ready to bat her hand away if she tried to snack on anything from the bag. over the years, through being friends with woody he had gotten to know jessie. through time, buzz had learned information about jesse that very few did, the topic of specific food preferences being one of them. like how she only likes vanilla yogurt because she likes to mix it with berry granola, how crispy m&m’s are the best sweet to offer her as an apology because she classes them as a sharing sweet, how she hated cheese but could eat it on pizza, how fish was a no go, how she only ate the top of broccoli, how she only uses cherry twizzlers as straws when she’s having a can of coca-cola. the list could go on and on. point is that he paid attention, maybe a little too much attention. 

“we’re friends, tina. friends go to other friends houses. plus she asked me to come with her when she was picking up stuff to take to the hospital, she didn’t want to be alone” admitting this was buzz’s second mistake. one he would’ve noticed he weren’t so distracted by putting the groceries away with the owner of the house on his mind “yeah i’ve got a key” he added “jessie gave woody and i one each for general use and emergencies” 

admitting this was buzz’s third mistake.

rita had been mid-existential crisis while staring into her coffee cup when buzz said her name. dwell on the past and he shall appear, huh? she had been meaning to reach out to him what with everything that had happened to sheriff woody but… well. he must have been busy anyway keeping things running. whole world on those broad shoulders. she pulled on her best smile in response to the question as she was, of course, alright (half-eaten yet utterly delicious toastie aside). “i’m okay. not my favourite night in the world but also not my worst,” she joked, waiting half a beat before moving from her table to his.

“hey, buzz. how’ve you been doing? ‘interim-chief sexy’ does have a ring to it but, ah, probably not the one you were looking for,” she teased, the seriousness of the situation softened underneath it. “how is everyone holding up?”

it had been a while since he’d seen rita. after the stressful events of the carnival, he couldn’t help but think about her and hope she was okay. they were once inseparable in a relationship that spanned almost three years (and two additional years prior to that of them not being able to get their shit together). although, even though they didn’t work out, he still wanted her safe. and happy. rita was always a vision when she was happy. “i get that, you are good though, right? is that big beanpole you live with looking out for you? i’ll jail him if he isn’t” he needed to make sure she wasn’t just shrugging it off. buzz let out a sharp laugh and shook his head “i think i can speak for all of us when i say we’d all happily scrub that night from our brains if we could.” it felt odd seeing her. she was someone so familiar and yet she felt far enough away to be a stranger. 

“i’ve been alright. busy given everything going on, but i’m alright.” a smirk broke over his face at her teasing, it was nice to see she still had her humour “is that the official title? they didn’t print that on the paperwork, must be a clerical error.” buzz gave a shrug of his shoulders “they’re as good as anyone can be. woody’s still in and out of hospital and jessie was a wreck during it all. i don’t blame her, but she’s been doing better since he woke up. the rhpd got a scare when woody went down, he’s the best of us”

being interim police chief while woody recovered was not his plan but here he was. thankfully, things had been running smoothly at the precinct which helped everyones stress levels stay in check - buzz’s included. 

he was on shift, out on his patrol when his lunch hour rolled in, he decided to go grab a coffee and a bite to eat from third street. at least then he could also check in on tj for becky. it wasn’t long before he was seated at a table in the restaurant and was waiting on his order arriving when he noticed someone familiar a table over

“rita? hey, how are you? i heard what happened at the carnival, are you alright?”

“Woody’s still in?” Tina asked, for once asking a genuine question. Yes, she liked to annoy him until he was at his wits end, but at the end of the day, Jessie was still one of her best friends and seeing her so worried was not a fun experience in the slightest. Hell, Tina was even genuinely concerned that Woody was still in the hospital, even if she had a funny way of showing it. It occurred to her quickly that Buzz knew Jessie wasn’t here, and yet, he still showed up (like she had). She was about to question him about it when he produced a key from his pocket, opened the door, and sauntered inside like it was absolutely nothing.

Tina cocked her head to the side, giving Buzz a once over. Her eyes narrowed. For a moment, she was uncharacteristically quiet. Obviously, she followed him inside, right into the kitchen.

“I’m actually here to ransack the place,” Tina joked, knowing that her answer (to see Jessie) was not the most pressing thing going on here. She cut right to the chase. “What are you doing here?”

“yeah, he still there. he was in a coma for over a month, they’re not sold on letting him back home yet” he had a theory that it was also to have him avoid unnecessary stressors like tina and iridessa for example, who had made it their mission to spike woody’s blood pressure to its absolute limit whenever they saw fit. jessie was understandably inconsolable for the time her brother was unconscious, even now she still only moved between her home and the hospital. buzz figured the least he could do was make sure there was food around for her to eat because he wasn’t confident that it would’ve been the case if it was left to jessie alone since her head was elsewhere with everything going on. 

unaware of his first mistake, buzz went about his business of unpacking the grocery bags, it didn’t bother him if tina came into the house or not. in fact, he would’ve preferred one of those options but tina’s arrival in the kitchen only proved that he wasn’t going to get the option he wanted. 

“i’m here to ransack the place” he mirrored sarcastically while he put away the shopping “i brought over groceries for her. she’s focused on woody and forgets that she has to eat. the fridge was looking bare the last time i was here with her. it’s one less thing for her to worry about”

he’s charismatic and charming and could talk his way out of anything. he’s generally a laid back guy who doesn’t want to make life hard for anyone. he’s brave and courageous and will always throw himself in the line of fire if it meant saving someone. 

buzz is is better at keeping his emotions in check than most people and can come across cold, but when his temper kicks off he can be vengeful if someone’s done something to hurt anyone he cares about. he’s stubborn at the best of times and he can dig his heels in if he believes he’s right, but he will eventually come around and hear your side out. 

Additional Notes*

has terrible vision - started off with being colourblind but his vision as since worsened. He wears contacts but can sometimes be seen wearing glasses - he hates them and usually woody’s dog bullseye has to act as a guide dog for him

despite his vision issues, he’s second in line in terms of numbers for arrests etc in the RHPD, behind woody the golden boy.

after his own mental health issues, he is big on mental health being given the tools it needs and runs a support group for people who feel like they need assistance. he personally checks in on all participants on a daily basis to make sure they’re all okay.

Tina was doing her rounds of people she had to pester this week to meet her usual quota, and much to her disappointment, Jessie was not home to aid in fulfilling that quota. While they were excellent friends, Tina really had to pick her days with Jessie, to get maximum friendage out of her. When Jessie was too tired, it was twice the work. To her dismay, when Tina arrived at the horse girl’s Jessie’s door, there came no answer. She peered through the letter box, stuck her face up to the window, and even tried calling. The sprite finally gave up on the endeavour when no answer called, turning on her heels.

To Tina’s great joy, however, someone was approaching Jessie’s front steps at the perfect moment. Quota, about to be met! “I didn’t know Jessie had a new mail man,” Tina remarked, knowing fine well that Buzz worked at the precinct, and was not, in fact, a mail man.

Since Woody had fallen ill and into a coma, Buzz had been trying to balance being intermittent police chief and being there for the Pride siblings. Having to do this had Buzz have a new appreciation for Woody and what he does. Now he just hopes that Woody wakes up and resumes his position as police chief, because Buzz didn’t want that job full time. In the meantime, it was his responsibility to look after the precinct and Jessie. He’d always look out for Jessie. 

Knowing that Jessie was spending most of her time at the hospital, Buzz had taken it upon himself to buy her in some food after seeing how bare the fridge and shelves were when he last visit her home. Approaching the home, he saw someone blonde trying to peer through windows. He was about to call her out when he saw that it was Tina. “She’s not here, Tina. She’s still at the hospital” he answered, ignoring her attempt at annoying him. Buzz reached into his pocket to dig out the house key and unlocked the door, letting himself -and Tina, since he knew she wouldn’t stay outside anyway- in and made his way to Jessie’s kitchen “What are you doing here?”
