I don't think there's anything wrong with the concept of an Abridged dub, there's certainly a market for that. But like with Ghost Stories it's kinda a problem for the bigger discussion of the material if this dub is the only way people engage with the series. And it certainly is now, considering stuff like Snapcube and many other dubs are watched less because they actually play off the original material somehow and more because people only see the out of context memes and go "haha funny meme i got that reference and i claaaapped"

Honestly even the snapcube fandubs isn't AS bad as the Ghost Stories dub, because the original game is still there to be played instead. In some ways the original game is more accessible than the snapcube video is. The youtube videos require an internet connection. Sonic games do not, you can just pop the disc in or load up the rom file and play it even when you're stuck on a desert island.

The problem with the Ghost Stories dub is it was created because the dubbers did not have any respect for the show they were working on. sergeant Frog has an abridged parody tier dub, but sergeant Frog is a comedy show. Taking a comedy show and doing a cracked out wacky dumbfuck dub isn't SO bad, again it's like the Super Milk Chan thing.

But Ghost Stories is. SUPPOSED to be. A serious show? With real characters and an actual horror vibe? It's supposed to be a show about GHOST STORIES? You're SUPPOSED to take it seriously. And the dub DECIDED to turn it into a comedy. For no reason other than the people working on the dub decided the show didn't deserve to be taken and translated on its own merits, and nobody had the good sense to fucking stop them.

Would the show have gotten the acclaim it had if the dub had been more legitimate? It certainly wouldn't have gotten the KIND of acclaim it did. But that argument is unfalsifiable because we'll never know, because they didn't do it. Frankly the fact of the matter is, regardless of how it would have turned out, Ghost Stories was not their story to ruin. They had no right. And if the shoe was on the other foot, I can't imagine they or you or any other creative individual in the world would take very kindly to someone out there in the world deciding that the story you created was a turd and thus they're entitled to completely rewrite what you wrote and insert a bunch of dead crack baby jokes instead. Because it'd be "funny" and make people throw their popcorn at the screen like it's rocky horror picture show, and you've arbitrarily decided that that has more value to it than DOING YOUR GOD DAMN JOB of translating the script you were GIVEN.

I have not seen and have no emotional investment in the original japanese script of Ghost Stories. I consider the dub to be pretty disgusting and reprehensible simply based on principle.

Technically Odex did do their own dub of Ghost Stories, but that's exclusive to SE Asia. They also did their own dub of Yugioh and while more faithful...oof the VA work

Kinda split on ADV's for Ghost Stories, cuz on one hand I can be entertained, even if some jokes aged like milk. On the other hand unlike Super Milk Chan there was 0 reason to do this. Milk Chan at least was already surreal stupid comedy, so the alt dub is still faithful to that genre. Though crap pacing hurts it personally either way dubs or sub. At least this was a DVD only thing that Japan later reverse imported, so they didn't hate it, despite unfaithfulness

The other sad thing is Ghost Stories having a banned ep that was never released in home media, nor dubbed. Even worse than Pokemon's Porygon ep honestly, cuz it straight up never aired as promos were enough to get it banned

They literally explained it at a con, but the reason they did the dub the way they did is just because they thought the show was bad so they felt entitled to just wipe their asses with it and the studio didn't care enough to stop them. If the show had had better ratings and the studio cared more about it, the dub would never have been allowed to do as it had done.

Fucking Samurai Pizza Cats literally didn't have a fucking script, they literally didn't know what the fuck they were SAYING in the original show. Ghost Stories dub was AN ADMITTED act of pure xenophobic spite.

Ngl I kinda think it's a blight and should never have been made the way it was. Wouldn't be so bad if it was like Super Milk Chan where there were two dubs, a gag one and a Real one. Ian Flynn allowed his version of Breezie the Hedgehog to act all robosexual around Metal Sonic in his work at Archie Reboot. Metal Sonic did not threaten her and just allowed her to respect him that way. Breezie was allowed to get away with the consequences with screwing Doctor Eggman over his money in the Sonic Fighters story arc. It's not like Eggman would not go over and shakedown the people who work for him to find out who is the real culprit that took his money away. Before the reboot Ian Flynn allowed Fiona Fox to smugly taunt Sonic and his friends faces how she recruited Lightning Lynx to her cause which is dumb as it would easily tip them off she is up to something worse and may try to get back with Scourge the Hedgehog. What do they do in response? Nothing. They allowed Fiona Fox to leave with Lightning Lynx following her. Ian Flynn doesn't allow Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends to show any empathy to Lightning Lynx that would try and persuade him not to join Fiona's side. Ian Flynn wants the heroes to not have the four animal ninja clans who are weaker than Eggmans robots not to threaten them when they plan to take on the wanna be Maleficient knockoff Iron Queen and her Kung Fu Panda knockoff consort The Iron King. Those four animal ninja clans are as threatening as your average power rangers putti patrol henchmen. Inconsequential compared to the greater threats employed by Doctor Eggman himself.

One of the many things that grind my gears about Satam/Archie is how they never gave Bunnie a reason to wangst over robot limbs. Her robot limbs were an invaluable asset against Robotnik and allowed her to kick major ass. As a matter of fact I would even go far as to say that her robot limbs were all she really had going for her, but yet she acts as if they're a fate worse than death.

I mean it's not like she is treated like a freak for her limbs. We never get to see people be like "ewww cyborgs, lets throw rocks at them" at her or shun her for being part evil technology.

Hell the limbs don't even have any major drawbacks. They don't even cause her pain. (Edward elric probably envies her)

The most I could imagine is, like, being turned into robot parts probably hurt I guess? For some reason? Because it being painful would be extra grimdank and having no other explanation for how that'd fucking make sense at all.

It's literally a straight upgrade with no downsides whatsoever though so yeah the comic is just stupid. Frankly I'm surprised Sally didn't force everyone to go through a similar process to improve their usefulness to her.

It never ceases to amaze me how the fandom treats Metal Sonic as an uwu baby. When in fact he's a cold-hearted sadistic little bot. In Heroes he even literally tried to burn Sonic and Co to death he shouted "burn to death" at them.

The closest thing he would ever have to having wholesome father-son moments with eggy would be stomping and kicking animals and laughing at the carnage they create together.

I'm sure Metal wouldn't complain though. If they treated him like that it'd just give him an opening to gore through their chest with his claws.

Part of me kinda hopes the sonic community never acknowledges that sonic and tails' relationship is meant to mirror gohan and piccolo's dynamic. Because if they do, it is undeniable that the entire fandom would start going "oh so they're the EXACT same with no differences at all"

which would lead to Tails being infantilized by the fandom in a way that's far worse than what they already do.

Despite how much I hate the sentiment of "Sonic is exactly like goku because they have yellow super forms!!!!" I'd much rather put up with that than see the disrespect towards tails get significantly worse.

It's a pretty frustrating venn diagram to consider because people already say stupid shit about Piccolo and Gohan what with "Piccolo is Gohan's REAL dad" and stupid bullshit like that. So people comparing that relationship to Sonic and Tails is even worse in that respect.

Ultimately it comes down to people NOT playing the Sonic games and also NOT reading fucking Dragon Ball. Resulting in a reeses peanut butter cup of complete idiocy that pisses me the fuck off.

There isn't enough attention given to the fact that Eggman frequently bestows his creations with true sentience just so he can harass and trample them.

Simply having a mindless war machine or efficient tool isn't enough for him. No no no no the guy WANTS the satisfaction of knowing there's a soul inside those metal bodies, going through turmoil while under his rule.

The dude is so committed to being a tyrannical ass that he'll create life in his shed and then proceed to give the entity permanent psychological damage without a care in the world. Not to mention how the doctor will proceed to kill them if they don't immediately do exactly what he wants.

He's choosing to give his creations independent thought SPECIFICALLY so he can force them into a life of enslavement and threaten them with death. It would objectively be easier to not basically create a soul for his robots but instead the doctor goes out of his way to give his machines, thoughts, desires, and a will of their own, just to force them into doing what he wants them to do.

It's impressive, hilarious, and twisted all at once.
