"He knew this because of the other two men's responses. If the man in the back had seen two white hats he would know automatically that his hat was white. But, seeing as how he said he did not know, then he either saw two black hats, or a black/white combination. So, either of the remaining two men could have a white hat, or, just as easily, a black hat. When the second man stated that he did not know the color of his hat, this told the first man that he was not wearing a white hat. For if he had been wearing a white hat, then the second man would have known his hat color," here Eddie paused, taking a deep breath, "So. The first man's hat was black. Oh, how I do love riddles..."

To celebrate 5 followers I have got a special riddle for you - lets see if you can figure it out!

Jim Moriarty captures three men. He gives them a single chance to escape. They are put into a line. The man in the rear can see the backs of his two friends, the man in the middle can see the back the man in front, and the man in front cannot see anyone. Moriarty shows the men five hats. Three of the hats are black and two of the hats are white. Blindfolds are then placed over each man’s eyes and a hat is placed on each man’s head. The two hats left over are hidden. The blindfolds are then removed and it is said to the men that if one of them can guess what color hat he is wearing they can all leave unharmed. The man in the rear who can see both of his friends’ hats but not his own says, “I don’t know”. The middle man who can see the hat of the man in front, but not his own says, “I don’t know”. The front man who cannot see anybody’s hat says “I know!” How did he know the color of his hat and what color was it?
