The Interest of Love and why it works…
This one is a drama I wasn’t quite sure I was going to like. It’s a slow, deliberate slice of life drama. Sometimes, those dramas just don’t quite come together enough to keep me interested (hello Chocolate anyone?). But this one…oh, boy it works.
The female lead is one of the best I’ve seen in a drama. Moon Ga Young is fantastic in this role. From the first episodes, we are shown how hard she struggles to be taken seriously by her coworkers. They see her only as the token beautiful woman and because she doesn’t have a college degree they look down on her. Though she’s played her part and been dragged along to company meetings so she could serve alcohol to clients, she does stand up for herself. That said, she’s flawed and makes choices that infuriate the audience.
The characters are all flawed and realistic. There aren’t any overt heroes and villains in this story. Every character has a motivation and reason for what they do. Sure, some of the side characters in the bank serve as our bad guys/gals to an extent but they’re a realistic portrayal of sleazebags in any office setting. Our main leads all make choices out of self preservation and fear. You will root for them and then curse at the screen because of what they choose to do.
There’s no over the top, makjang shenanigans. There are rich/poor conflicts but they are portrayed in a genuine way. There aren’t any kimchi slaps - just a lot of pointed comments about class differences and what makes someone worthy of success. One of the most potent storylines in the drama is how Mi Gyeong (our rich female lead) tries to shower Sang Su with gifts. To her, it’s a sign of affection - her father gave her everything she wanted and it’s easy for her to just buy a car to replace Sang Su’s old one. To Sang Su, it’s disrespectful, overbearing and highlights their class difference. But at the same time, Su Yeong gives Jong-Hyeon money for his father’s surgery and provides him housing so he can study. This isn’t an overt sign of wealth, but she’s doing the same thing to Jong Hyeon that Mi Gyeong is doing to Sang Su.
The story keeps moving forward. There are some parts that are slower than others, but I don’t fast forward as I do with some dramas. Each episode presents something new for the characters and keeps up the momentum.
I genuinely don’t know how it’s going to end. I think we will get a happy ending with our main couple. But, honestly, I’m not sure. And, surprisingly, I would be okay with that type of ending as long as they continue with this character growth. This is a show that is focused on telling a story of people and how they navigate obstacles in their lives.
PINING. If you love characters pining for each other this is the show for you.
I really recommend this show for how well it tells the story of these characters. I am very invested in all of them and love how well the show is crafted.

i love jonghyeon and think he’s been super adorable, but i also can easily see why sangsu and suyeong are a better fit…sangsu and suyeong aren’t going to grow by being with migyeong and jonghyeon
for sangsu, he doesn’t have to do much communicating of how he feels or what he wants out of life with migyeong, because she takes the lead on everything. i can easily see how the relationship will basically be her ft. sangsu, not a combined effort
for suyeong, she has problems trusting other people generally and those who have advantages like money, family, a college degree, or a network. there was no pressure to get over those issues with jonghyeon (at least, not until he pulled this lame break up move) since he put no pressure on her and he’s “safe” as he’s irrelevant to her professional future as a security guard.
but when sangsu has to figure out a way to stand up for suyeong to match the support he would only give her in private–that’s growth. same when suyeong has to cut sangsu slack and not condemn him in her mind for minor mistakes. so i’m still excited to see them actually end up together.

Hello again! I am very sorry for not responding in a while; I have been very busy as of now. At any rate, I have found the time to continue, and so I shall. I disagree with a few of the points you have made, so I will first take them up before moving on to Rukia’s feelings.
While you raise good points towards the strength of the bond between the two of them, none of it really pushes the idea that its romantic in nature unless you look at these instances in a vacuum without taking in the story as a whole into account
I daresay I have to disagree. The activation of Ichigo’s Fullbring brings Rukia into brighter light than the rest of his nakama, including Orihime. It can be agreed that the very thought of Rukia caused Ichigo to activate his ability, and therefore as it is an “ability of Love”, we can be certain that Ichigo indeed does feel “love” towards Rukia. The context is similar to the caption in Naruto which, through the words “worst emotions he’d ever felt”, insinuated Naruto was unknowingly in love with Hinata. We also have the vast amount of evidence I provided earlier. Don’t you find it peculiar that when it comes to Ichigo’s own feelings, Rukia is the one most often brought to the spotlight? I do not see how Rukia can be Ichigo’s ray of light whilst he is in love with Orihime. I can also add that if Ichihime was really being pushed within the manga, we would have explicit proof of Ichigo bearing romantic feelings for Orihime, just as we do Ichiruki. Ichigo and Rukia’s feelings for each other have changed, according to Tite Kubo’s quote, from friendship to something. The only other option is lovers, and such is evident throughout the manga, as I have described in my earlier essay.
which unveils how Orihime to this day doesn’t perceive Ichigo’s bond with Rukia as an obstacle to her own affections towards him [her love for him should be developed towards dying out if Kubo is pushing towards an IchiRuki ending…..but I’m not seeing any such push and I really don’t think Kubo would lead her on to failure]
Logically, such doesn’t really contradict the romantic implications expressed throughout the series. You are correct; we must take into account the entirety of the story. However, would that not imply taking into account the romantic (which in a way, even you have admitted to) implications of Ichiruki? Orihime not being jealous does not contradict the ship; I feel that it merely suggests a character development of some sort. In which Orihime has matured in her feelings and is no longer hindered by the poison of jealousy. That does not at all take away from the fact that the moments described in my previous essay have indeed happened. A contradiction would be if Ichigo hinted he held romantic feelings for Orihime, which he has not so far. I also feel Kubo has plans for Orihime’s love for Ichigo. I do not know what he will do with them, but he will do something interesting regardless. I actually have a theory, which I will probably express in my future essay.
how Rukia’s character arc features Ichigo nowhere near as prominently as it does Byakuya [she’s more “Byakuya’s pride” than heroine of the story nowadays] and Renji [with whom now we constantly see her paired with]
That is only because at the time specifically, Rukia is a soul-reaper who is to fight alongside her comrades. I understand you are thinking about it within a different context and I am not comparing yours to the logic of Narusaku shippers in any way, but generally speaking panel time does not equal to romantic development. Rukia spending time with Byakuya and Renji does not contradict the romantic implications I have expressed earlier. It merely suggests that perhaps the author wished to bring Byakuya and Rukia’s relationship to focus in the arc. If we were to assume that Rukia being Byakuya’s pride was somehow a contradiction to Ichigo’s feelings for Rukia and Ichiruki’s romantic development, then logically Byakuya and Rukia would have romantic feelings for one another, which defies canon and crosses somewhat into incest. We can also apply your logic to Ichiruki; Ichigo’s importance to Rukia and vice-versa was much more prominent than Rukia’s importance to Byakuya in the Lost Substitute Shinigami (Fullbring) arc. However, that does not contradict the fact that Rukia is Byakuya’s pride. Likewise the focus on Rukia and Byakuya’s relationship does not contradict the romantic Ichiruki development we have seen throughout the manga. Naruto fighting alongside Sakura rather than Hinata during the war does not at all contradict the vast amount of Naruhina evidence, and same can be said for Ichiruki. As for the heroine bit, Kubo said himself that he intended for Ichigo to be the protagonist of the humans and Rukia to be the protagonist of the shinigami. So I disagree; she is still the heroine.
and how Kubo did indeed make the point of how their relationship isn’t romantic however you wanna phrase it.
Here I would like to bring up that he was specifically stating how their relationship was at the time (2008). It would be quite silly for them to have a romantic relationship at the time; the excitement of the love story would have been ruined. As they were more than friends, we can assume they were shifting into the stage of lovers, which is why when Kubo was asked what he wanted readers to focus on within the manga, he expressed the change in their feelings. So it was not a reference to their relationship in general, but rather their relationship at the time. Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship was not romantic until both understood their own and one another’s feelings.
I just don’t see how with the way the story is flowing that Ichigo and Rukia are supposed to go from Nakama to lovers without it being a pretty big whiplash due to the lack of momentum.
I respect your opinion. I really do. I would disagree, however, because I feel that “stopping the rain” was the momentum, but we both have our shipping goggles on, so our opinions would obviously differ lol. I simply feel that they have wonderful development beginning from the moment Rukia changed Ichigo’s destiny. It is a gradual development, just as Hinata’s feelings for Naruto. In this case, I would say that there was no “momentum”. Hinata gradually fell in love with him. Ichiruki has been building upon itself from the beginning of the manga. They will not abruptly turn from friends to lovers as you insinuate; they have slowly been doing so since the beginning.
Kishi did damn good giving NH momentum [off of Hinata’s confession, a weapon that IchiHime has in its arsenal] in Naruto’s closing arc, so we’ll see how Kubo does whichever route he chooses to go.
Kishi did an incredible job with Naruhina, I completely agree. I could see it coming way before I began to ship them. However, Naruto heard Hinata’s confession, while Ichigo did not hear Orihime’s confession, so personally I would not compare the two. Orihime’s confession was the equivalent of a mental proclamation, which we heard several times before. Ultimately it made no difference. Though I suppose in the end Orihime certainly loves Ichigo, so that is one up for you. But to counter that, both Ichigo and Rukia (I am getting to that now) are shown to hold each other in highest importance and have feelings for one another.
And really, do not go apologizing. I already feel guilty for having you read this and wasting your time; apologizing merely intensified such guilt. And thank you for the complement; it means a lot coming from you specifically.
What is Ichigo to Rukia?
What an interesting question. It was difficult to unearth as Rukia is a lot more reserved and was not pushed to the extremes Ichigo was (as in Ichigo being forced to part with her, and the experience being painful to the extent where he wondered if he could keep up with the speed of the world without her). However, I have managed to divulge the truth, I believe. It all begins a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away *queue Star Wars main theme DUUN, DUUN, DUN DUN DUN DUUUUN DUUN*. Nope, just kidding (and hyper excited for the Force Awakens). It begins in the Soul Society Arc, when Hanatarou is describing Rukia and his encounter with her:
It is very interesting because she chooses to speak solely about Ichigo. Rather than speak about Renji, Byakuya, or generally others, she mentions only Ichigo. Of course, obviously he would be on her mind and this has no romantic implication whatsoever, but it still delivers the message that Rukia is already very emotionally attached to Ichigo, despite their short encounter. Ichigo and Rukia develop very quickly compared to others. At any rate, moving on to the next panels:
Key word “unbelievably”. This suggests that she never trusted (trust was the term utilized in the official VIZ translation) any one as much as she trusted Ichigo, hence her interesting wording which suggests that the level of faith was new to her, and perhaps new to society (at the very least, in her eyes). She trusts Ichigo more than anyone, more than Renji, more than Byakuya. Although this is a mere opinion, I do not see how Rukia in the end could fall in love with anyone but the person she trusts in most/has the most faith in. They seem very suited for each other.
Now moving forward to the scene prior to her “execution”:
In this page, Rukia is contemplating the happiest moments of her life, hence the word “content”. She acknowledges Renji, Byakuya, and Kaien. Lastly, in the largest panel which also appears last, we have “Ichigo’s attempted rescue”. Does this insinuate that the happiest memory of her life was when Ichigo attempted to rescue her? Most likely. That is beautiful development, if I do say so myself. Moving on:
Ichigo is separated from the majority in three different ways. He is shown to be the largest panel, he is placed last, and he receives a “goodbye” rather than a thank you, contrary to the others in her life. This, I feel, highlights how important Ichigo is to Rukia, more important than the others. These are the final moments of her life, so she is likely to be completely honest with herself. She would have died thinking of Ichigo, and that per se is some very rare development. It is also only until she thinks of Ichigo that she begins to shed tears, which is also of great significance.
Now moving forward, we have another iconic “Big Ichigo”:
This is actually affirmative proof that she considers Ichigo above Chad, Ishida, and even Renji and Byakuya. Utilizing order of appearance and panel size, we can derive from this scene that Chad and Ishida, sharing the smallest panel and appearing first, are the least important to Rukia (amongst this lot, at any rate; they are still important). Following them, we have Byakuya and Renji sharing a slightly larger panel. Finally we have Ichigo, with a large double the size panel appearing last. This is without a doubt proof that Ichigo is more important to Rukia than Renji or even Byakuya. Many detractors like to argue that this is all invalid as we see Orihime next with the largest panel. However, this is an incorrect notion as we can clearly see (based upon the following words and the context of the situation) that Orihime is displayed up front solely because Rukia is intent on rescuing her. Although we all know that Hime is very important to Rukia, I seriously doubt that she would consider her more than Byakuya, Renji, and Ichigo. And as saving Hime is what she is focused upon, Orihime is her greatest concern at the moment. Disregarding Hime, it is interesting that despite being focused elsewhere Ichigo still manages to attract the most attention amongst the others that are important to her.
I am much too lazy to cover the smaller details within the series, so I will jump to the Fullbring Arc. This arc actually contains the greatest amount of IR romantic implications, so there is a lot to discuss. Let’s bring our attention to these panels:
I can just barely express with words how strongly the pages indicate Rukia’s feelings towards Ichigo. Upon taking into consideration Toshiro’s words, we can easily picture the amount of faith Rukia has in Ichigo. Rukia is one to strictly obey orders, but yet sacrificed them for Ichigo. And she alone was willing to trust him to that extent. She explicitly disobeyed Soul Society in her trust in Ichigo when even Chad and Orihime were shown to mistrust him. If Kubo was truly pushing for Ichihime, why would he constantly bring moments like these up again and again? Why would he have Rukia believe in Ichigo while at the same time Orihime did not?
Moving on, Rukia promptly begins to relive her admiration for Ichigo. It relates to the “man in my heart” speech: Once again she displays her fierce faith and belief in the man in her heart (and lol the effect it has on him). Interesting as she never labelled anyone other than Ichigo and Kaien as someone in her heart. Interesting how Kubo decided to bring Ichigo and Rukia’s relationship into such a light. Rukia is never shown reminiscing about someone in such positive light; the closest anyone has come to such an extent is Kaien. Rukia time and time again displays Ichigo’s importance to her. If Kubo was indeed pushing for another couple, why not do the same and more for Renji? She also separates herself from the “others” and the Soul Society. She highlights Ichigo’s importance to her by emphasizing his effect on her with panel-size and separation. Why not group herself with the others? She understands the difference between Ichigo’s relationship with her and his relationship with the others. She highlights herself, which is also of immense significance. The only other person known to highlight Ichigo’s affect on them specifically is Orihime.
Finally, she says something unknown to the rest of us, while putting up the following expression.
Honestly, her face in this moment says it all. One would assume love and admiration, something of the sort. Again, we have these pages to reinforce the idea:
Rukia jumps in front of Ichigo, sacrificing herself as she sees that Tsukishima is about to stab the Strawberry. Many argue that Riruka was controlling Rukia at the time, but Kubo himself has sated in a databook that he wanted this scene specifically to parallel the time Rukia protected Ichigo with her own body in the beginning. Riruka’s ability has never been said to allow her to physically manipulate others; it merely allows her to hear their thoughts and feel their own feelings. At any rate, we see Tsukishima smile wickedly as he is about to instead kill someone important to Ichigo lol, Ichigo’s scream of terror lol, and then Riruka ultimately saves both by throwing herself in harm’s way. However, what caused Riruka to perform such an act? Here is where I expand upon Rukia’s silent thoughts and peculiar expression. Riruka is shown to deeply value love. She kidnapped the boy she was infatuated with, was the only one who called the Fullbring an “ability of love”, and harboured romantic feelings for Ichigo. Riruka heard and felt Rukia after the bit where Rukia thinks “The one who changed me was…” It is unknown to the readers what Rukia thinks next, but known to Riruka. It was something that moved Riruka to the extent that she saved both of them at the cost of her own safety. Something to do with the concept she valued most: love. Rukia, ultimately, either felt Rukia’s love, heard it, or both. Why else would such a panel be drawn? Ultimately this is the only explanation and one that makes perfect sense at that.
There are so many more indications of Rukia’s feelings for Ichigo, even in the character arc you felt was devoid of such implications. I could honestly go on, but you get the general gist already (at any rate I hope so). The final bit of my three part essay will be rather complex and interesting. I will delve into much deeper detail than that of the past two parts, so I am certain you will find it interesting regardless of whether or not you actually agree. I will actually discuss the Hueco Mundo Arc, Orihime character analysis (honestly I love her even more now upon really understanding how complex she is) my thoughts on Ichihime based upon the arc, and how the arc actually contained IR romantic development rather than IH. To be frank, I am not going to outright claim that I do not care if in the end you agree or not; I would absolutely love for you to agree and would love even more for you to begin shipping IR lol. I just wanna share the love with as many people as possible, ya know? But at any rate feel free to express your opinion, and feel free to ask me for the romantic implications in the character arc.
