12ish years ago, well before I worked in fashion, my mom & I watched Project Runway together. Episode 1, we knew @csiriano was going to win. Years later I got invited to one of his shows, and I excitedly told my mom, who was just as thrilled as I was. Every season I’d regale her about the designs, show her photos and videos, and it would bring her such joy. When I could finally tell her that he had cast plus models in his show, she and I were both thrilled that people who looked like us were being represented. When I stopped by his press preview in December, I shared this story, and I left @the.curated.nyc with a book for my mom that Christian had signed. I gave it to her for Christmas, unsure if she would still remember who he was. As I showed her the inscription, she burst into tears, thanking me for “the most beautiful gift” she had received in years. It was an incredibly emotional moment that I’ve replayed in my mind over the last month. Today was beautiful, as expected, but it was so much more than that. She was there with me. Grief is strange. I’m existing in a fog, some purgatory between reality and not, where nothing feels right. Is this real life? Who am I in this world? How was your #2018 ? It’s been an enlightening year for me - 2018 was about saying yes to opportunities, especially if they were drastically out of my comfort zone. A couple highlights: 1. Traveling to Vancouver for @vanfashionweek & experiencing a relaxing fashion week. 2. #Coachella with @simplybeusa - I was convinced I was going to HATE it, but I LOVED it! (It didn’t hurt that the bloggers I went with were fabulous - @curvily @plusjones @curvesonabudget13 @stylishcurves ) 3. I created not one, but TWO #plussize pop ups at @citypointbklyn - being able to connect brands like @eloquii @chromat @alpinebutterflyswim @tamaramalas to all of you was so exciting! I am not an event planner, but I loved seeing it all come together. 4. I finally took a real vacation with my husband. It reignited my love of international travel & reminded me that I need to prioritize it in my life. 5. I went to a #bodypositive “Fat Camp” with @curvily - I poured my heart out & shared my #bodyacceptance journey with the campers...and anyone who watched the @broadly doc. 6. I hit 10 years of working in the #fashion industry & I covered #NYFW for @11honore - seeing a decade of evolution of acceptance & diversity has been amazing. This year has also had some intense downs...watching my parents get sicker & lose more abilities has been soul-crushing, but ultimately it’s been a powerful reminder about how precious our time is. So I go into 2019 with a few strong motivators, some reminders from 2018 & some goals for the future. I will continue to say yes to things that challenge me. I will remember that self care is more than face masks & foot soaks, it’s taking care of my mental health & knowing how to set boundaries, knowing how to stop working. I will open up more of my life, & share my journey with you all. And I will have a first draft of my book before the end of 2019 - because it will only exist if I fucking do it. What was the worst job you ever had? I’ve had a bunch of odd office experiences, but one of the things I loathed was the dress code at a few of my first professional jobs. No personal style was encouraged, they just wanted us all buttoned up in stiff suits, so for years I’ve avoided them like the plague. But now suiting is stunning - gone are those basic blacks and dull designs - now suits are colorful, stylish, and even comfortable.
