adding to this because i think it’s important :

we see also in other scenes that tyler is very much responsible for everything his brothers do. it’s not just sharon that puts this on him, it’s bear, too. tries hard to make tyler into a man at the expense of his feelings. if jay messes up on sawing the planks of wood, we get this exchange:

(sidenote tyler makes this face AFTER bear says that. like he was just being normal and then he practically sneers at bear. love this for him personally!)

but then when jay takes the blame and tries to save tyler from bear’s wrath?

bear REALLY says “what’s wrong with you?!” with his ENTIRE chest. for something as simple as jay messing up on cutting some pine. it’s insane the amount of responsibility sharon and bear put on tyler’s shoulders as the eldest. and i could go on about how criminally overlooked tyler’s speech in the cabin scene is and how much sense it makes that he feels this way about the family and about jay ... BUT i just wanted to get this little-seen scene out there and talk about how tyler is held responsible for so much of what goes on with dale and jay. especially jay!

and when he kills joyce he's so regretful and having a mental breakdown and clearly he can't show it physically cause yknow he's the big bro and has to be "tough" (i know that this isnt canon but i think its heavily implied that he wasnt able to show his emotions, or at least in a healthy way). love love love this read! i absolutely agree, a lot of people say he's merely 'angry' in these scenes -- but that kind of explosive, aggressive reaction is the only way he knows how to express himself. tyler's logical but reactive, and when he sees dale get killed in his place, all he can do is shout before shooting. the whole sequence of events is fast, his brain's rushing to understand the new reality ; he's known dale for what feels like forever, has loved him since he was born, and now in an instant he's ... gone. doesn't help that this is when the holts realize, as a whole, that they can be killed for this crime. up until this point, yes, things have been tense, tyler's taken the situation seriously, but none of them excepted their lives to be so expendable. being killed off for some petty theft they did just for survival. they committed the crime so they wouldn't die, yet here they are fighting again in order to see another day.

ah, i digress! but tyler's entire reaction to dale's death is heartbreaking. he still can't fully comprehend it, seeing as in the third chapter he's staring at where they're bagging up his baby brother's body going “ he's really gone. ” something i think people bypass a lot, that plays heavily into this sequence, is that tyler doesn't want to hurt anyone. he's not violent by nature, he was nurtured into it thanks to upbringing. fighting with tiny fists that slowly turned into calloused hands in the name of protecting his ma, getting his ass beat every time in the process. but in spite of that gory nursing, he can barely stomach death or bloodshed. his reaction to joyce is, ah, very telling of this! while it is by his own hand, as soon as he realizes what he's done? he brought to the floor and overwhelmed instantly. needs to stomach it, since he's the responsible one, yet it's an intense inner struggle that he can't voice because that's how he deals with things like that. out of all the holt boys, the game does a fairly good job at implying tyler's the one who's not allowed to express himself, be himself. it shows in his limited hobbies and dreams ( he builds for money, he likes building, and his dream is building? yet there's no talk of anything else? kinda telling! ) in each interaction with sharon and bear ... he doesn't even have friends or a partner to speak of. actually says this in his speech about how he's never had a life of his own, since he was burdened with handling everyone else's. tyler can't panic because he's dale & jay's leader, he can't falter because he's sharon's crutch, he can't be anything if it doesn't serve his family in some way. he lacks so much autonomy and agency it's a little crazy!

yet those things aren't something that can be completely taken away. so tyler's still secretly sensitive ( despite bear's attempts to beat it out of him ) and he does have wants even if he doesn't recognize them as his own desires. and what he didn't want, during the eternity of the desert dream, was for anyone to get hurt. even as early as the first chapter, he plainly states this & during the fight with vince, manages to remove the last bullet from his gun. ensuring there was no real threat, no matter who lost. what does he say to vince if the guy tries shooting him? “ i told you i wasn't gonna hurt anyone. but you were just ready to do it, huh? ” he's hurt that vince was willing, sure, but there's this pointed anger aimed at violence as a whole too. tyler safely sets the hostages out of the way before the cops raid the motel, he gives vince constant chances despite claiming he's a nuisance, and if michelle gets shot he's visibly devastated! wants vince to send her out, even though he feigns indifference to the choice. it says a lot that when tyler shoots joyce it's just, again, an impulsive response. one that was driven by emotion, by a need to shut her up ; because she was hitting him where it really hurts. basically saying : it's your fault, tyler. you killed him. it's all on you. a mantra that's been fed to him his entire life, hell, one that his own mother repeats the second she finds out :

very fascinating how his first words to her are an apology, like he already knows how she'll see it as if it really is his fault, which is exactly what joyce said. it's all tragic really. joyce just wanted to protect vince and tyler wants things to not be how they currently are. another layer that makes it all the more heartbreaking is that it was entirely unnecessary, because ( unpopular opinion here ) ... i don't think tyler was going to kill vince. if he wanted revenge, if he was truly only angry, why not shoot him as he's running back into the motel? why open the door for him and let him in? why, when faced with everything that's just happened, is his second question :

like, why does his return matter? it has nothing to do with dale, yet tyler cares ( very much so! ) anyway. there's so much going on in this scene -- he's a storm of emotions, rapidly shifting through them as they crash into him. a victim to them since he's never learned how to handle such things. it's probably the most emotional we see him ever, besides his breakdown in the cabin scene where he's unable to keep pretending he's stronger than he is. that tough front crumbles then, and it crashes here. a good chunk of how i view this character & how i portray him is only supported by the entirety of this scene and i love it, even though it kills me.

gosh, there's tons more to touch upon ( how he was raised, his stunted emotions, etc ) although i'll cut it here so this ramble piece doesn't get too long haha. but seriously, this is an amazing and very eye-opening moment for tyler, so thanks for your thoughts on it! they very much align with my interpretation, which is delightful to see <3

i was thinking about an adf au for lilian because … well i just love her. and i sort of realized that lilian is a very urban kind of poor — she lives in a bad neighbourhood in an apartment complex where there’s always some kind of violence. it’s very… like. it’s very urban. she would likely be used to street fights and armed confrontations and things like that. which is kind of an aside because this post is about her adf au. i think it’s important for lilian’s character that she’s very much… surrounded by people who are more privileged than her. like anri wears designer clothes and henry spends his whole life playing video games. there’s just kind of more privilege in their lives compared to how lilian deadass does not have a bed in her room and just sleeps on a couch.

all this is to say, i think lilian would have gone to t.r.h. in jay’s year (since lilian died at 18, i kind of just imagine her to be jay’s age or a year older since i usually write her as 19). it’d be kind of cute if she was friends with vanessa or if she and vanessa fake-dated for a while similar to how she did with anri. also this is a total side note but i do think if lilian was going to fall for any holt boy it would be jay. but not as he is throughout most of the game. i mean like if she was talking to chapter six jay. she’d fuck with chapter six jay so hard. though i do think it’s funny because lilian very much… goes for idols. she falls for vincent, who’s an internet celebrity. and then all my favourite ships for her are about her being obsessed with someone who’s popular and utterly beloved. like… light yagami… matpat… the list goes on. so idk if she’d actually be into jay or not but it’d be fun to think about. also i think dale would find her cute but i just like it when dale has crushes on people in general
