Salem just scowled at the older girl, the mood swing from nervous to irritated fast enough to put even her dad in a spin. Sure, it was a shitty lie, but that didn’t mean she’d had to call her out. If the Gryffindor wasn’t gonna squeal, she could’ve just nodded her head and carried on her way. Besides, the entire castle was magical, were hot stairs really so hard to believe?
“Of course it’s a prank!” And what else would it be? Was there another reason for icing a set of stairs, maybe something more common here than on the Isle? If there was, she really wished she’d known about it before coming up with the prank and trying to lie about it.
“Just imagine the look on people’s faces when they start slipping and sliding all over the place!” Just thinking about how dumb some of them would look had Salem grinning, “And then when the stairs start to move? It’ll be priceless!”
Alina thought for a moment about the other’s words, watching her closely. She decided that this girl was most definitely an isle kid and that’s why she hadn’t recognized her. She made it sound as if what she had been doing was so innocent, as if it wasn’t going to hurt anyone, but what she was describing went against that in pretty much every single way imaginable.
Uncrossing her arms, Alina took a small step towards the other, her brow furrowing in confusion. “No offense, but that sounds like kind of a shitty prank.” Not because it wasn’t a good idea, in fact, it was guaranteed to get a few laughs out of a few people, but it was shitty thing to do. Plain and simple. Alina had no issue with pranks, she loved them, probably spent too much time pulling them herself, but never with intent to harm others.
“Yeah, I don’t really get it. It just doesn’t seem funny to me. It’ll ruin all of their days and people could get hurt really bad. Pranks are supposed to be fun, something that the person who is pranked can laugh at once they know it was all a joke.” Alina got the feeling that if someone fell and broke a bone, they wouldn’t look back at it and laugh.

Against all odds, Jay was having a good day. He had spent a lot of the day with Carlos, who was one of the best friends he had ever had, and one of the only people he had ever felt even remotely safe with. He had spent some of the day with Mal, who was his first friend and who would likely kill for him. And he’d spent part of the day with Evie, who had held his face for a moment before saying something about his perfect bone structure for probably the hundredth time, but it made Jay feel special every time all the same. He felt like he could breathe, a rarity for days in Auradon, and he felt loose in his skin. His father was far away on the Isle with Mal’s mom, with Carlos’s harpy of a mother, with Evie’s Evil Queen. He was perched in a chair, alone in his own common room without his friends when Alina Nedakh-Thatch stumbled through the portrait.
If it were an Isle kid, he just would have stayed in his seat (maybe even have laughed), but Alina was always pretty nice to him. Instead, he stood up and moved to check on her, keeping his movements relatively slow as to not startle her - he knew how wary some people still were of Isle kids, even people like Alina who wouldn’t have even meant it. Jay offered a chuckle, though light enough that it would be clear enough he didn’t mean to make fun of her. “Afraid not. You okay?” he asked, tilting his head downward as he looked up at her to give the kind of impression of looking up through his eyelashes. This wasn’t an intentional showing on Jay’s part, but it was how he stood all the same.
Tumblr media
She had been clinging onto the very very very small amount of hope left in her that maybe Jay would just make a small joke and carry on. He was an Isle kid, according to stereotypes, he wasn’t supposed to care. But Alina had never really believed in stereotypes, especially not the ones surrounding Isle kids, still she was just banking on the fact that maybe this time it would be true. Or maybe not even true to all of them but just true for Jay. In all of her interactions with him there was nothing to support that, in fact, he had always seemed extremely friendly and open.
Alina internally groaned as she watched him actually stand up and make his way over to her, to see if she was okay. It was a little charming and she thought it was sweet, but that didn’t erase the fact that the whole situation was just turning into Alina’s personal nightmare. “Besides embarrassing myself and taking a major hit to my pride, yeah I’m doing good.” She offered a smile she assumed probably came off more awkward than it did warm as she uncomfortably shifted her weight from foot to foot. Whenever she was around him, she just completely forgot how to act like a normal human being, it was impossible not to. Jay was a beautiful human being, one of the most beautiful she had ever laid eyes on, especially with the way he looked at her, which she knew was completely innocent and not in any way directed towards her, but still. “Thanks.” She said quietly, because that felt like the sort of thing she should say in a situation like this.

Only just suppressing a shriek in surprise, Salem still nearly jumped out of her skin at the presence of a witness. And even worse, it was somebody she didn’t know! Hiding her wand behind her back as she slowly turned to face the interloper, the Hufflepuff could tell just from looking at her that this wasn’t one of the Isle kids.
Meaning chances of snitching were high.
“Umm, well, see, the stairs looked hot?” It wasn’t a good lie, but then, Salem hadn’t been at all prepared to be caught. Everyone was supposed to be busy stuffing themselves to capacity, utterly distracted, and she was finding it all rather unfair that someone hadn’t stuck to the script, “I was just, ya know, trying to cool them down?”
Maybe she’d get lucky, maybe this girl was a complete moron and would totally buy her little fib. She was wearing Gryffindor robes after all, it could happen.
Alina didn’t recognize her instantly which meant she was either from a different year or from the Isle. She hoped she wasn’t from the Isle, because she was a bit of a terrible liar. It was hard not to scoff at it, but it was so sad it was almost pitiful. Alina hadn’t even offered such a weak excuse before in her life and she certainly had given some bullshit reasoning for as to why she was somewhere she wasn’t.
Alina let out a sigh, shaking her head in disappointment and letting her hands drop to her side.
“You could have said anything and you’re trying to tell me the stairs looked hot? Next time you get caught doing something you’re not supposed to try and come up with a better excuse, for example, maybe you were just practicing a spell in a more confined area when no one was here and were going to fix it after you were done.”
It was hard to come up with something that wasn’t entire incriminating once you had been caught but you could do better than what she had offered.
“I’m guessing you don’t mean any harm, that this is just a prank. At least I hope so.”

Ignoring the growl of her stomach, Salem giggled quietly under her breath as she continued her work, knowing that she didn’t have all that much time to get it done. It was difficult to set up the really good pranks with so many students and professors wondering around. There was just always someone around to walk in on you, catching you in the act. And then you either had to hope they wouldn’t snitch, meaning you’d owe them, try to bribe them on the spot, or threaten them.
And Salem wasn’t wealthy or intimidating enough for those to work.
Fortunately, there was one time of day when no one would be wondering the halls, not even the prefects; dinner time. Every student, every professor, even every house elf would be busy either in the Great Hall or in the kitchens. And they gave the Hufflepuff just about an hour to set up what she was sure would be one of the greatest pranks in Hogwarts history.
Casting glacius once again, Salem just grinned as she carefully walked backwards down the moving staircase, slowly waving her wand side to side to get an even coating of ice on each step.
Absolutely brilliant.
@princessnedakhthatch
There were plenty of times Alina skipped dinner, it was the perfect time to do the things that Alina loved doing most, which was doing everything you weren’t supposed to do. The only times she could do that with ease was during meal times and quidditch matches. But she wasn’t about to skip quidditch matches to pull some lame prank, there was so much more to do at the games. However, the sight she saw as she was about to climb one of the many staircases came as quite a huge surprise.
Sure, there were plenty of other people at the school who enjoyed to cause a little chaos. But she didn’t think she had ever actually caught anyone else in the act of trying to pull something off. Not to mention, this didn’t exactly look like just some harmless little prank. It was bound to cause a few more injuries than that.
Alina put a hand on her hip as she watched the other for some time, who obviously had no idea that someone was watching her.
Clearing her throat to grab her attention, Alina raised an eyebrow, “What are you doing?”

Alina was having what someone might call a bad day. From being late to class, to forgetting to do a homework assignment, to getting in trouble for being out of uniform, it hadn’t exactly been her favorite day. She was missing her friends and couldn’t help but wish that she were still on break. The adjustment from Atlantis back to Hogwarts wasn’t going as smoothly as she would’ve liked it to. She had forgotten just how much work she actually had to do when she was here. And now, with her parents on her, constantly texting and calling and checking up on her, it made it kind of impossible to just avoid the work like she had previously done.
But, despite the mess that her day had been, she was optimistic. It was the end of the day, she was heading to the Gryffindor Common Room to relax and all would be well. However, like always, life decided that things weren’t going to go according to plan. Right as she was entering in through the portrait, she tripped, stumbling forward and just nearly falling face first into the ground. She managed to catch herself at the last moment and just when she looked up she saw Jay, of all people, staring back at her. Her eyes widened, her heart rate increasing in embarrassment as she tried to come up with something to say. After moments of silence she awkwardly cleared her throat, “Any chance you can pretend you didn’t see that?”
