i am so so incredibly curious about kugie and sou's hypothetical ytr dynamic... just. blinking at them. i recall you mentioned maple thinking sou is a very nice polite man and i was wondering if she's like the only one to think so :o
I LOVE KUGIE AND SOU!!!! they are so shaped. the general dynamic between them is that sou likes kugie well enough, and kugie’s feelings on sou are…very complex tbh. she really doesn’t trust him but she ends up feeling sympathetic for him in a lot of situations
their relationship starts off pretty well, as sou is one of the main people to comfort kugie while she’s grieving. he kind of projects onto her a little bit, because he’s also grieving kanna in his own way, so he empathizes with her. yet, as much as she appreciates this effort, i think part of her would be…unnerved by sou. kugie’s a very perceptive person, and something that struck me about her relationship with kanna is how she initially thought kanna was ‘creepy’ for always smiling and laughing, not realizing she was just trying not to inconvenience anyone. in that same way, i think she’d recognize that something was off about sou in that his whole demeanor just seemed sort of…fake.
i think this feeling of distrust would come to a head in the first main game, where it’s revealed that big ol’ liar “sou hiyori” and the more quietly deceptive “shin tsukimi” are working together. kugie and shin really mutually dislike each other when they first meet (recognizing the self through the other (derogatory)), and so kugie’s feelings about shin sort of rub off onto how she feels about sou too.
so, moving into chapter 2, we have this weird dynamic where sou is liking kugie more and more and kugie is liking sou less and less. yet, this begins to change when kugie comes to the conclusion that sou is being manipulated by shin. why does she think this? well,
at some point, sou finds the phone from kugie and kanna’s first trial room, and much like shin does in yttd he rewrites the message to sound like something kind: something kanna would actually say. he then goes to kugie to, effectively bribe her for the laptop, saying that he’ll give her the phone if she gives the laptop over to him.
initially she’s like HELL NO, i’m not falling for that, but then sou pulls his sadboy act and is like “but…if i can’t get the laptop, then i’m not sure what sou will do to me” which of course IMMEDIATELY activates her big sister instincts and she’s like ok what. we are not doing this. take the laptop do NOT hand it over to “sou” he’s clearly just using you for his own personal gain. so basically sou emotionally manipulated this poor girl into believing that he was being emotionally manipulated 👍 hate this guy (affectionate)
i think that from this interaction, kugie starts to trust sou more (which is ironic because this is one of the only times he just straight up lies to her). weirdly, i feel like kugie starts to see kanna in sou and sou starts to see shin in kugie. obviously they’re very different people but they have similar attitudes about lots of stuff. it’s just the elder sibling activation instinct over and over except they’re both trying to be the elder sibling
their relationship starts getting rocky again at the beginning of the violet route, though. and it’s because sou crosses the one line that kugie will never accept anyone crossing— hurting ryoko. she gets extremely angry at him and sort of holds this resentment throughout chapter 3. so now we’re back to that tumultuous nature of kugie getting really mad at sou, and sou atp in time realizing that he really really actually cares about kugie, which he never expected to.
…but then she goes BACK to being protective over him once she realizes how badly he’s going through The Horrors with his mom. kugie just. can’t make up her mind about this man. AND I CANT BLAME HER HES A MESS!!!
i hope this satisfies the greenbling urge but yeah they are the sibling dynamic of all time i luv them <3 that’s sou’s weird emotional support teenage girl who wears screws in her hair for whatever reason and beats him up for his wrongdoings /j

the dream is hazy now but i'm 60% sure it was set in a hypothetical chapter 1 of ytr. and the viewing was like an anime episode! there was many card switchings that happened but sei got the sacrifice in the end... the story got to the point of the maingame but before the voting started it abruptly cut to your tumblr profile... i cannot remember what you did or anything that happened after that. 😅 - 💤
i was preventing you from seeing spoilers 🫡
(ok but the part about ytr being like an anime episode is so so cool actually)

maybe 39 with kaidori........
BAHAHA ok this one is very funny to me…because this is literally what they do for like. half of ytr. They Pretend They Do Not See *It (*It = the baggage from the weird emotionally-charged sorta platonic sorta romantic relationship they had in their teenage years that’s haunted them into adulthood)
i think the biggest thing they’d avoid talking about in the beginning is the fact that they know each other. it’s obviously a very awkward position for them to be in, given the fact they’ve both betrayed asunaro, but the thing is: they dont KNOW the other has betrayed asunaro. they can assume that much, but even then they dont know WHY. this leads to a lot of suspicion and tension (“what are you doing here?” “what are you scheming?” < (the second one mostly being from kai to sou)), suspicion and tension they’d rather not deal with when they’re quite busy with other things (like…trying to stay alive)
but the other thing they’re trying to avoid (key word trying) is the utter whirlpool of emotions that comes from them seeing each other again. there’s so much hurt, and longing. they can pretend they hate each other all they want, or that they’re complete strangers, but they really miss each other!!! and this ambivalence (aka half suspicion half gay yearning /j) ends up becoming this weird game of “will they won’t they” cat and mouse type bullshit where they’re too afraid to talk about their feelings so they end up skirting around it and everyone else is just like “what on god’s green earth is going on with those two.”
i really wish my brain was coherent enough to provide more specific examples, bc i have some really juicy ideas for tension between these two (especially after sei’s death. good lord the tensions are high) so maybe i’ll have to write smth about that…
i think they’d FINALLY start talking more around the middle-end of chapter 2-ish. it’s rocky, for sure, but i think it works because they’re able to comfort each other and relate to each other in a way that no one else really can. but i feel like their relationship doesn’t really fully bloom again unless sou lives to chapter 3. shit tons of kaidori throughout there. shit tons of hurt/comfort. both having to cope with 1. seeing their awful parents again and 2. seeing their awful parents literally die in front of them. so…they’re both kind of messes. but they’re messes who adore each other ^_^

you were in my dream last night! i forgot a majority of what happened but i can remember there was some mess up with the sacrifice card. funny stuff.
anon this is possibly the funniest ask i’ve ever received. but also i have so many questions. i love the subtle implication that this took place in the yttd universe and i was there somehow(???). was i the one who got the sacrifice???? were you also there??? was it just the yttd characters and then also somehow princesseevee06 for some reason? i know you probably dont remember but im just. so intrigued by this 😭

sou 40 and/or 49 ??
anon i have GREAT NEWS because both of these things canonically happen!!! let me introduce you to the wonderful, tragic madness that is the identity reveal in the second main game.
…it’s just a small thing. ryoko is looking over the participant papers again, desperately trying to look for anything that might help win them an extension. it’s so small, she barely thinks it’s worth mentioning. but it’s something. a discrepancy.
on the paper, next to shin’s name, it lists his occupation as self-employed. but…”sou” was the one who introduced himself as self-employed. that’s weird, isn’t it?
of course, when she brings it up, shin and sou both vehemently deny its importance, saying it must be some kind of mistake, etc. etc….but their lives are on the line, and guess who knows exactly what the truth is and can’t bear to keep quiet anymore!!! that’s right, here comes kai satou with the steel chair!!!! /j
no, but seriously, kai is the one who ends up exposing sou’s identity. he figures there’s just zero point in keeping it hidden anymore, because they NEED all the information they can get right now. he also figures that he can vouch for sou (despite his obvious shadiness) since they are both Former Asunaro Kids™️
now, sou recognizes that kai is trying to garner sympathy for him in this way, and the both of them are also beginning to recognize that this vote is either gonna be between shin or sou, so sou immediately tries to shut this shit down by making himself look way worse. basically, he says that the reason he betrayed asunaro was because he was denied his rightful place in the death game, and he wanted to be able to observe everyone’s suffering up close (but also of course, he wanted to win). now this statement is like….half-true? he definitely felt robbed of his place in the death game, was interested in seeing everyone’s reactions to the death game but that was never his main goal, and he never entered the game with the intention of winning.
but of course, kai isn’t just going to let his totally-not-ex-boyfriend get himself killed, so he calls sou out for his bs, and exposes what he’s almost certain is the real reason sou’s here: to protect shin.
and i mean, yeah. he’s 100% correct about this. so now sou has to go on his dramatic monologue about him gradually becoming disillusioned by asunaro and knowing about shin’s 0% survival rate and being pushed to the brink before he could no longer take it and felt he had to escape the organization. and now shin’s sitting here like the most miserable wet cat with the biggest saddest eyes because he knew NONE of this
and this of course leads to the “self-sacrifice” aspect of the main game: the vote. sou’s objective hasn’t changed, he’s still hellbent on saving shin by any means possible, but that is also now conflicting with his own abject fear of death. he had always intended on the both of them escaping alive, and didn’t account for a situation where he’d have to pick one or the other, himself or shin.
yet, in a weird and tragic way, sou has been accepting the inevitability of his death for a while now. he realized that if he stayed with asunaro and accepted his role as floormaster he would’ve almost certainly died (the object of the floor 4-5 subgame is literally to murder the floormaster.) and he knows even if he survives this, when another main game rolls around he’s not going to have enough trust in the group to survive anyways. to him, there are really two options here: die now and save shin, or die a little later at the cost of shin’s life. and…as scary as it is, one of those options sounds a lot more appealing to him than the other.
hence…he starts prattling off all the reasons why he’s a terrible, untrustworthy, malicious person who will not contribute to the welfare of the group whatsoever. whereas sweet, kind, emotional shin (or at least that’s how sou sees him GHFHFJ) is perfect for contributing to the group’s overall trust (now that they’ve removed the barrier of his fake identity, of course). (and also, of course in tandem with this shin is arguing how weak and useless he is and how strong, knowledgeable sou is the practical choice to keep alive)
…yeah. sorry idk what else to say it’s just…a rough time all around

shin w/ prompt 2
anon im OBSESSED with this idea.
Tumblr media
it immediately reminded me of this one post i remember seeing that posited maybe shin’s survival rate was so low because he kept sacrificing himself for kanna…and that line of reasoning combined with ytr + a time loop?! juicy as hell.
my thought is that when he first goes through the loop (aka, still unaware that he’s even in a timeloop yet) things go about as you’d expect. he takes the sou hiyori alias, determined on leaving his old, “weaker” self behind. for a while, it works out pretty well, that is until the second main game. when he realizes sou’s life is on the line, that one of them is going to have to die, his emotions ultimately end up trumping his survival instincts. selfishly, he wants his best friend to live because he can’t bear the alternative: having to lose him. in the end, he can’t leave “shin tsukimi” behind. so he takes ryoko’s vote for him in stride, and even sets up a parting gift for her, satisfied with his death.
…and then he wakes up again, back in his first trial room.
from here on out, the main intrigue of this idea to me is that no matter how hard he tries, shin can’t let go of his humanity—the desire to save the people he loves. he always ends up sacrificing himself for someone, usually sou, but sometimes kugie or hinako or even ryoko. it’s not that he *wants* to die, the entire point of him fabricating his identity was to survive, but…he’s also a bleeding heart. and in some sort of idealistic naïveté he refuses to let go of, part of him still believes that he can survive without anyone else having to die either.
i think at some point, people would start to catch on though… i somehow wonder if sou would purposely try to do something stupid so he dies before shin and can “save” him… o_O oh god i’m just turning this into kagerou days-

10 with maru pls? :]
oh my god this is SO interesting???? i feel like this parallels keiji’s situation in a way but like instead of being the one to commit a crime and get away with it he’s being accused of a crime he actually didn’t do….dear lird
my thought: what if someone at asunaro framed ranmaru for murder in order to pressure him into signing the form. like, the type of thing that’s like “we can get alllllll your charges dropped if you just sign right here!!!” i think if ranmaru was placed in a desperate situation like that he could be convinced pretty easily, but i wanna make this even moreeeee twisty
what if, sort of like megumi does, kurumada tries to cover up what happened?? like, i’ve sort of already established him as a mentor figure for ranmaru, and i can totally see him trying to take the fall for what happened even if he ALSO didn’t do it. or maybe even kurumada is the one to sign the form to get maru out of hot water.
from there, i can basically see the scenario heading one of two ways. 1. ranmaru has another wish he has fulfilled and signs his own form anyways, leading to both of them being kidnapped into the death game. i think this scenario would add extra guilt to kurumada’s death for ranmaru, because he basically already took a risk for him and ranmaru repaid that by. accidentally getting him killed
or 2. ranmaru never signs the form. who would take his place in the death game? idk! but at least he’d be alive…and actually even though kurumada gets kidnapped here still, he might survive too. he’d have a different first trial though, probably a solo one. and if that one is anything like the one he got in canon, then well….the odds might still not look so good for him LOL. and i think ranmaru’d also feel guilty knowing kurumada suddenly disappeared and be like. What Happened To Him
in conclusion: do not frame a maru for a crime it is bad for their health 👍
