professor, are we stuck in the past? of course not. the past is stuck with us.

a timetravel university roleplay in which a professional relationship changes drastically as they find themselves all over history (against their wills)

muse a (19-39) is headstrong, really clever and a quick study. she doesn't need help, she just likes to help others. similarly, she's smart enough to be cynical, she just chooses optimism and kindness. muse b (50s) is a man who has dedicated his entire life to his undying curiosity. he is prone to enthusiastic lectures, sometimes outdated references, and talking to himself. as a result, he is not someone with elaborate personal attachments. when muse a swings by after hours - to question, complain, or perhaps to hand something in - muse a casually locks muse b's office door despite his protests, which triggers a sudden timeshift. as they are thrust into the past, they find themselves adjusting to and interfering with the locals, solving mysteries, and desperately trying to find their way back.

muse a (17-21) is a prodigy from a rich family that only ever fights and controls, whose parent(s) treat him horribly, so they run away, cut their off, never to be seen again - hopefully. they've always been charming, adaptable, pleasing, so it's easy to find people who sympathize, or even people who would offer their own bed - provided they date or sleep together or whatever. maybe muse a is picky in this regard, or does it while resenting that they have to - that's up to you. one day they find their way to muse b (30-40), who says no, no way, absolutely not, i don't have time for charity or relationships. i just want a pet. muse a insist they don't need autonomy or respect, they're fine with listening to muse b's every whim. so muse b calls their bluff, accepting the arrangement. but muse a was not joking... [any. if m/f, m should be muse a]

muse a (19-39) is a headstrong student/faculty member who cares about everything and everyone, which plays a role in why people underestimate her -- but that same stubbornness that enables her to defend others, allows her to defend herself. she allows no-one to disrespect her. besides, she's really clever and a quick study. she doesn't need help, she just likes to help others. similarly, she's smart enough to be cynical, she just chooses optimism and kindness. muse b (50s) is a man who has dedicated his entire life to his undying curiosity, including several degrees and travels across the world. his attitude is very no-nonsense, and he’s bad with names and faces, but he’s ultimately caring enough to help others even if he doesn't necessarily want to -- though, more often than not, he satiates his curiosity along the way. he is prone to enthusiastic lectures, sometimes outdated references, and talking to himself. as a result, he is not someone with elaborate personal attachments. he avoids them, even. muse a and muse b barely know each other, though maybe they've noticed each other hurrying through ancient halls - some dating back as far as the 11th century. it is only during this semester that they first meet properly and muse a gets to enjoy survive attend muse b's lectures in the flesh. but when muse a swings by after hours - to question, complain, or perhaps to hand something in - muse a casually locks muse b's office door despite his protests, which triggers a sudden timeshift. as they are thrust into the past, they find themselves adjusting to and interfering with the locals, solving mysteries, enjoying their time. and then suddenly they're back to real life, what a relief. it should be a relief. until they try it one more time, again and again. but this can't go on forever. it will catch up with them eventually.

with the current state of affairs, you can only trust your own

a step-sibling rivals to toxic codependency to lovers roleplay set in modern day high rise apartments, luxury hotels and elite schools

the valmont family has produced generations of executives, businessmen and philanthropists. muse a (17-21) is expected to fall in line with their expectations to the letter, many of them contradictory, because she's a girl and that's just how it is. but after years of trial and error she has figured out exactly how to pretend to meet all those expectations. preppy patient girl with good grace and love in her heart by day, whatever she damn well pleases by night. the frustration she feels from having to keep all this pretense up is best directed at her peers, her boyfriends, her staff, and last but not least... muse b. muse b (17-21) didn't even know he was going to be indicted into all of this until recently, because his father sprung everything on him out of nowhere, but he's a quick study. he adjusts to the influence easily, bends to expectations but always retains his freedom and respect because this sort of thing is more straightforward for men. muse b falls into muse a's family like he was born into it, much to muse a's immediate distrust and annoyance. in their rivalry, they step on each other's toes and elevate each other and ruin each others' nights and days, revealing themselves bit by bit, until they've accidentally fallen into a strange, tense bestfriendship, and at risk of falling into each others' beds. when you're always hiding your true self, there's nothing scarier than someone who knows all of you.

a toxic codependent best friendship roleplay set in the midwestern city suburbs in the late 90s/early 2000s, ft. bad poetry and period-typical homophobia

muse a (17-21) is nothing special, according to himself and others. wallflowers are almost invisible. he's kind of shy and deeply insecure about anything but his taste and talent, freckles and glasses and all, because he knows music and knows he has something to offer there. learned several instruments playing by ear; could probably learn anything he wanted if his mind didn't fixate on whatever it damn well pleases. on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, muse b (23-29) is practically infamous. locally renowned for his poetry and lyricism, all trouble and bad habits. can’t seem to commit to anyone or anything for longer than a few months - if they make it beyond the first two weeks. the emotional baggage and psychological damage is what makes him a good writer (or so he thinks, anyway). he considers themselves the worst person in the world and god’s greatest gift to mankind simultaneously. most people agree with one of the two. they’re both in bands already, though muse a is a part of the scene and muse b’s group still rehearses in someone’s mom’s garage. when one day muse a overhears muse b, muse a immediately knows they have to work together. no matter what. because muse b, who turns heads without meaning to, is determined to show the whole world his and muse a's synergy and talent. unfortunately, as muse b gets muse a out of his shell, muse b begins to realize that what he actually wants is to have muse a all to himself. their connection is genuine, but the fact that neither are acknowledging their mutual attraction turns the situation unbearably ambiguous and increasingly desperate.

reasons for there to be only one bed ˗ˏˋ ꒰ 🍊 ꒱

¹⁾ they’re undercover as a married couple, and as such need to act like one

²⁾ there’s technically two beds available, but it’s freezing cold and everybody knows body heat works best

³⁾ it’s a camping trip, and one character’s forgotten their sleeping bag

⁴⁾ a character goes to their friend’s house after an emotional upheaval in search of comfort, and ends up staying the night - but refuses to kick the homeowner out of their own bed, resulting in the two of them sharing it

⁵⁾ in a roommate scenario, one character’s bedroom has been rendered unusable - and with the couch being unsustainable in the long run, they proffer sharing the one remaining bed as a solution

⁶⁾ there are two beds, but only one blanket

⁷⁾ a character’s taken ill, and the other party worries too much to leave them alone for even a minute

⁸⁾ in a fit of anger after a mission gone wrong, both characters sleep in the only available bed because no one was chivalrous to offer to take the floor

⁹⁾ a character’s had a nightmare, and needs company to feel safe enough to go back to sleep

¹⁰⁾ the weather takes a tumultuous turn, meaning a late night hangout has to turn into a sleepover when a character gets stranded there for the night

¹¹⁾ it’s a late night at work and when they both grow too tired to continue on, the only option is the lone office couch

¹²⁾ a threat’s been made against one/all character(s) involved, and so under the guise of safety in numbers it’s deemed safest if they stay together - everywhere

¹³⁾ one character joins the other for a late-night conversation, and ends up getting comfortable in their bed next to them - evidently too comfortable, as the char in bed falls asleep on the visitor and effectively traps them there

¹⁴⁾ there’s no bed in the shoddy refuge they’ve found after things went sideways, so when it comes time to sleep the only real choice is to stay close together

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
