Consider this: There is absolutely nothing stopping you from headcanoning your Courier as one of the Twisted Hairs. 

This is my oc, and she and Ulysses used to be together - that is, before Ulysses changed his name, the Legion arrived, and she left refusing to join Caesar. Many years later she became the Courier - and, subsequently, met Ulysses, first giving him a new home, a shared one, as it used to be, and then snatching it away from him again.

There is a lot of love and hate felt by both of them, and this is symbolized by the braid that is both connecting and choking them. The braid is also obviously a symbol of the past, better and simpler times.
