The problem for me is that Tumblr has already screwed up on what "should have been" scraped. I am not assured that these toggles and buttons and options will do anything meaningful, especially since at least one Tumblr employee with intimate knowledge has actively removed their own art from the platform, and we're supposed to just believe that the platforms they're selling to will honor their agreement. Okay.

(Also, screw you! Why does TUMBLR get to sell my fanfiction? Anne Rice herself would stand on my neck for trying.)

AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner. 

We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.

To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option. 

For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc. 

Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.

In light of the recent PostPlus nonsense tumblr is trying to pull, here’s a reminder that monetization of fanfiction can lead you to legal trouble. On Ao3 it’s against the TOS to even mention any money-sending site at all because of the conditonal protection they offer.

Putting your entire fanfiction blog behind a paywall is like pointing a neon sign saying “please sue me”. I bring this up specifically because tumblr mentioned fanfiction in the post that they made and that is going to leave a lot of people misinformed.

Remember: Do NOT paywall your fanworks.

And rest assured, my blog will never be pay-to-read, even if this weren’t a fanfiction blog. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.

You, Shopkeeper Wytche, are a traveling merchant, hopping from town to town to keep your small on-the-move shop called Tea, Trinkets & Tellings; you never stay still for too long, only for some weeks, to avoid the suspicions of townsfolk about your true, not quite human, nature.

Now your travels have brought you to the tiny town of Wesmark. You have gained yourself a cozy corner shop with an adjoined living space for the next seven weeks and set up your business as usual. Life goes on as it always does, you keeping yourself veiled and the townspeople at an arm’s length… Only that some of your new customers are making it difficult to keep to yourself, and your growing fondness of them might even make you second-guess your inevitable departure.

Play as Wytche, a traveling merchant slash witch hopping from town to town. Your special talents along with fortune telling and general magical knowledge can include one of the following:

Naturalist: you have a knack for the ways of nature and the fruits it bears – and you also might have some other interesting skill you didn’t even know about yourself.

Shapeshifting: you can take the shape of any animal (and with little extra effort, even human) your heart desires.

Allure: you draw in both humans and animals of unsuspecting nature, setting them at ease with your mere presence. Who knows when that will come in handy…
