Eddie was out of it the rest of the day. How could he be so naive? How could he think there would be any chance of success in high school? Hell, he'd probably still be in high school at 35. Eddie was just stupid, and there was no changing that fact. He wouldn't be shocked if he died with no diploma.
He was silent on the car ride home too. He muttered a simple, "hello," to Mary, but he had already walked to the car with Caitlin, so there was no point in saying hello to her. He answered Mary's question about the test with a simple, "it was fine." Eddie knew it was a lie, and he was sure Mary knew too (she's very perceptive.) Truthfully, Eddie was embarrassed of the truth.
Tumblr media
"How was the test, kid?" Nothing. Eddie said no words to his uncle's question. He simply sauntered over, and plopped himself on the couch next to Wayne. He was sure he looked like a kicked puppy.
"That bad?" Wayne brought his arm across Eddie's shoulders, bringing his hand to his hair, which had just grown out to his ear. Wayne brought his nephew's head to his chest, allowing him to let out any emotion. "There'll be plenty more tests, son. Plenty more chances to show what's in that brain of yours."
Son? Wayne had never called Eddie, "son," before. Eddie had never realized Wayne viewed him as a son as Eddie had viewed him as a father. And Eddie was fine just sitting with Wayne. No tears had been flowing, he was just upset with himself. No tears had been flowing until one word. Son. "There's nothing in this brain. It's empty."
"Come on, you know that's a lie. There's music chords, and song lyrics, and all that other music stuff up there." Wayne tapped on Eddie's temple.
"It's nothing useful. M'brain's not useful." Eddie's face was stained with tears. His face was flushed, and he looked like he has just spent an hour in the snow. He wasn't useful.
"Listen, without your brain, you wouldn't be able to be in that band of yours, you wouldn't remember any birthdays, you wouldn't even be here. Do you know how quiet this place would be without you? It'd be a nightmare."
Eddie thought the tears were over. He wanted to be here, on Earth. He knew he did. He just didn't want to be here, in Hawkins. He wanted to be someone else. Someone smart.
"Let it out, son." Eddie was glad to have his uncle. He always heard real men weren't supposed to cry,but Wayne taught him differently. So, Eddie did let it out. He cried until he had no tears left, and Wayne stayed, letting his shirt stain with his nephew's tears. He would just change before work.
Eddie strummed his guitar lightly. Wayne was right, if Eddie knew anything, it was music. And, he had a band for it. His brain could be useful. Sometimes.
Tumblr media
He skipped the last half of the day the next day. He knew he shouldn't, and he knew he vowed he wouldn't,but it was just so tempting. He would still go to the Hellfire meet, that was a promise he wouldn't break. Truthfully, it was partially because he didn't want his eyebrows plucked, but Dungeons & Dragons was cool too.
Luckily, Hawkins was notorious for not giving a fuck about students, so Eddie was free to do whatever until 6 PM.
Tumblr media
6:00. Eddie was already in the Hellfire room with Kim and a few other kids he didn't know, waiting for one more person. He was fidgeting with his nails, as he didn't know any of these people, and he only talked to Kim once.
6:02. A boy walks in. And he is beautiful, more beautiful than anyone Eddie had ever seen before. He made Eddie scared, almost, because of how he made him feel. But, Eddie didn't want to be scared right now, so he tried his best to shake whatever feelings he had off and tried to look over at the beautiful boy as little as possible.
"You hear a light trickle come from a nearby lake. Drip! Drip! There's a hint of movement below the surface, but whatever's down there is yet to reveal itself. What is your move?"
The group huddles up and begin to whisper, meaning Eddie couldn't hear what was going on. So far, it's been enjoyable. He had never really had an entire club of people that plays D&D, just his band. Plus nobody was a major asshole like he thought they would be.
Then, Eddie caught a glimpse of the beautiful boy, whose name, he learned, was James. He wore mountains of bracelets on both arms and multiple rings in each hand. He wore a leather jacket, adorned with pins of different bands. His skin was a warm brown and his hair was an ash brown, shirt afro. Eddie doesn't think he's seen anyone prettier.
The huddle unravels, and Eddie's sure James sees him staring, but how could he think of anything else when he could think of his glowing brown eyes. There were tiny bits of black around them, and Eddie wondered what they were from before the scared feeling came back. He was supposed to feel this way about a girl. That, "I only want to look at you for the rest of my life," feeling was meant for a girl.
"We choose to prepare ourselves for battle." Eddie thinks he could pass out from his voice.
“So, what’d you think? I know they aren’t the most welcoming people, but that’ll change over time,” Kim asked.
“It was nice,” Eddie had no idea what to say.
“And that means…” she trailed off, waiting for Eddie to say if he’d join or not.
“I’ll join.” And he definitely only says that for D&D. Not any other reason.
Tumblr media
Eddie walks home. It’s not like it was pouring rain or flaming hot outside. There was no harm. Sure, there was a slight scowling sound in the wind, but Eddie didn’t think much of it. It was probably just the trees.
He opens the door to the trailer, thinking of barely anything. He sprawls himself out on his bed in silence. Why couldn’t he just be a girl? That was the only thing on his mind. If he was a girl, maybe all the feelings inside his brain would be normal. But, he wasn’t a girl. And his feelings weren’t normal. He clutched onto a nearby pillow, hands frigid. His body felt cold. If only he was a girl.

Nancy Wheeler would not have been the type that you see on the street and think she works at the local tattoo parlor. Sure, she had a few piercings, and a couple small tattoos, but the tattoos weren’t even visible half of the time, and anyone could get their lip, nose, eyebrow, and ears pierced.
But, she did work at the tiny tattoo parlor next to the quaint little cafe that all the customers visited after getting ink permanently engraved in their skin. And Nancy visited the cafe everyday after her shift too. And, everyday, Nancy sat in the same section that the cute waitress Robin knew worked. Nancy desperately wanted to talk to her more than telling her what she wanted.
Secretly, Nancy hoped that she would come into the shop one day, asking for Nancy’s advice on where and what tattoo she should get. But Nancy could suffice just sitting in her section at the cafe.
Tumblr media
The bell chimed just about the time it normally does, signaling the tattoo artist next door had just walked in. Robin had suggested getting a small tattoo, just to see Nancy more than 20 minutes per day. And (Y/N) had thought about it. But, then she thought about the needles and the insanely pretty girl centimeters away from touching her, and that changed her mind.
(Y/N) watched as Nancy took a seat in her usual section, fiddling with the long sleeve of her shirt. Nancy’s wardrobe changed throughout the seasons. (Y/N) noted Nancy wore more sweaters, jackets, and pants during the winter, slowly began to opt for more long skirts, yet still keeping the sweaters and jackets as spring went on. She wore more dresses in the summer, and then began to wear simple long sleeves and pants in the fall. It was nice how she kept her style throughout the year. It was like a breath of fresh air. And, if the days were hot enough, a glimpse of a tattoo could be seen.
No one else was sitting in her section. Most people opted to sit by the windows or in a more secluded area to do whatever business the people of Hawkins could do. But not Nancy. She sat right in the middle of the place, and that was tradition. Add that to the fact that barely anyone was there around 4 PM on a weekday made today another perfect day to just talk to Nancy. And today was the day. There was no special factor making today an extra confident day or any special meaning behind it. It just felt different.
“Good afternoon! What can I get for you?” It was obvious what Nancy was going to get. She got the same thing every time she came by, but (Y/N) always asked, just in case. Nancy loved that she asked, even if she would never change her order in a million years.
“Just what I normally get would be great.” Nancy didn’t know why she always felt the need to be so formal when the sweet waitress talked to her, but she was.
“It’ll be right out!” And Nancy knew that was true. She didn’t know how everything was fixed so quickly, but it was like everything was out in a matter of minutes. Truthfully, her order always gets put in a little bit before she gets there, just so she doesn’t have to wait.
Nonetheless, (Y/N) walks back to act like she's putting it in, just so Nancy doesn’t find out about the secret. Today was the day. She was going to talk to Nancy. Right now.
She walked back over to where Nancy continued to fidget with her sleeve. “You work at the tattoo place next door, right?” (Y/N) didn’t mean for her voice to come out so soft, but it did. Nancy just made her so nervous, like she could burst into a million pieces of nervousness.
Nancy jerked her head up. She thought (Y/N) knew where she worked with the name tag pin clipped to her shirt very visibly, but how could she simply point at a name tag when such a beautiful human being was talking to her. “Oh, um, yeah. Why d’you ask?” Nancy's voice was soft too. Not as soft as (Y/N)’s, but still soft.
“Robin told me I should get a tattoo. I was wondering if you maybe had some advice on where I should get one. Like what part? Obviously I’d just go next door to get it done so I know where I would go to get one I just don’t know where on me obviously,” she rambled. As she talked, (Y/N) simply picked at her nails, not wanting to make eye contact with Nancy. She thinks if she made eye contact she really would burst into a million little nerves.
“Well, I wouldn’t suggest getting one on your stomach since it’s kinda painful. Same with your neck. But I would say your shoulder or forearm if you don’t want it to hurt that much. But if you don’t want it to be too visible, maybe the top of your thigh. Does that help?” Nancy hoped, hoped, and hoped that she got a tattoo, and she hoped she was the one working instead of Eddie or Jonathan or any other one of the stupid guys there. Nancy would pray that she got a tattoo, even if she wasn’t religious.
“Yeah, that helps a lot! Maybe I’ll come in sometime soon!” In the middle of her words, the bell signifying that Nancy’s order was ready. (Y/N) rushed over to the counter, grabbing the small plate and cup and brought it back to Nancy. “Enjoy!”
Tumblr media
8 days later, Nancy was beginning to wonder if (Y/N) was actually going to get a tattoo. She knew she took the day off, so there was no point in going to the cafe after work, and Nancy felt empty knowing she wouldn’t see her. It was practically the highlight of her day now, especially after having to deal with assholes on some days.
It had been a dry time of day with no clients in when the doorbell rang. Nancy snapped her head to face the door, seeing none other than a very nervous looking (Y/N).
“I was starting to think you weren’t coming at all!” The happiness was evident in Nancy’s voice, which soothed the nerves from walking in the place
“I was just waiting for my day off! Plus, I needed to decide what I wanted. Can’t make a stupid decision when it’ll be inked on forever.” (Y/N) chuckled nervously. It was supposed to be a joke, but Nancy didn’t laugh, which made things worse. This was awkward. Maybe she shouldn’t have come here; she was scared of the tattoo gun anyways.
“Right,” Nancy smiled, “what were you thinking?” Nancy knew whatever the idea was would be perfect. Call her lovesick or whipped or whatever other word possible, and she would agree. Because how could she not be?
“Just somethin’ simple. A small heart just around here.” She circled around an area just on her forearm. She took Nancy’s advice, which made Nancy’s heart swell up.
Soon, (Y/N) was sat down with her arm out, waiting for Nancy to come back. She took time to note the surroundings. Pictures of previously done tattoos scattered the walls, and she wondered how many of these Nancy had done. They were all so beautiful, whether dark and scary or bright and sweet.
“Alright, are you really sure about this? Don’t want any regrets.” Nancy snapped her gloves onto each hand.
“Very sure.” (Y/N) watched as Nancy sat in front of her, prepared to clean the area. She looked so focused. It was a beautiful sight. More beautiful than the beaches or mountains or anything. Nancy Wheeler was the Earth’s finest.
She was so mesmerized by Nancy that she didn’t realize she was already placing the stencil, looking up at (Y/N) for approval. “Oh, that’s good.”
Nancy prepped all the machinery, focused on doing everything exactly right. It was quite calming, actually. She was so careful with her actions that some of the nerves began to ease. She was so delicate with everything that it added to the artistry of it all. However, not all of the nerves were eased because some of them were caused by Nancy herself.
(Y/N) wondered how Nancy is able to do tattoos so well. Even this simple heart was well-cared for, so she wondered how much care she had for the more detailed and extravagant ones. "You look really pretty when you're all focused."
The buzzing in the room suddenly stopped. (Y/N) realized what she had said, as she hadn't put much thought into it in the moment. "I'm so sorry it's just that you're just-"
"Do you really think that?" Nancy looked up from the tattoo with admiration in her eyes. Her eyes were almost glossed over and sparkling, eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"I-" (Y/N) paused for a moment, "yes."
Nancy smiles softly before looking back down at the tattoo. "Almost done here," she whispered.
"I think you're really pretty too, by the way." Nancy applied whatever cream or ointment tattoo artists normally apply after tattoos. ((Y/N) wasn't sure; it's not like she does tattoos.)
"Really?"
"Absolutely."

im so sorry you have to see this
as someone who is a big fan of big time rush and stranger things. this is who i think steve, eddie, jason, and jonathan would be if they were the big time rush members.
jason = james because. i feel like their personalities are similar. and they both have similar hair. i bet jason is obsessed with his hair. steve = carlos because steve is extremely chaotic and carlos is also extremely chaotic. eddie = kendall because kendall is like, the lead singer or whatever and eddie SLAYS when it comes to music so he’d definitely be the lead in a band. jonathan = logan because they are both super smart and cute and sweet guys im actually in love with logan did you know that i bet you didnt but now you do okay ill shut up. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

MOST AMAZING WRITER FR!1!1!1!1!1!1!!1
stargazing ⋆ robin buckley
Tumblr media
summary  ⋆ reader learns that robin has been having a tough week, so they take her out to do some of her favorite things for the night. warnings  ⋆ swearing and the use of “i love you” please notify me if i missed anything! gender neutral 1.7k words.
Tumblr media
Robin hadn’t been having the best week between school and personal problems, so, you wanted to plan something special for her. To show her how appreciated she truly is, even if it doesn’t always seem like it. And luckily for you, you’re dating her, so you know all of her favorite things to do. You planned to spend the night doing the things she loved, you wanted her to be able to forget all about the problems she was facing at the moment, even if it was just for a small portion of time. You knew anything would mean the world to her. All of this was a surprise, for her anyways. On the way to her place you stopped by some random small market and picked up a bouquet of flowers, roses, romantic and her favorite kind of flower. Red roses, to be exact. You pulled your car into the driveway of her house and parked it, glancing in the rearview mirror at yourself, before grabbing the flowers careful not to break them, or stab yourself, and hopping out. You took a deep breath, a small smile on your lips as you eagerly walked to her front door, lightly knocking on it. She was home alone, her parents were most likely working extra shifts to make ends meet, so she was obviously the one to open the door. When she opened the door, you were met with her tired expression and tense shoulders. She had most likely spent the past few days, and nights, working and studying practically non-stop. A wide grin was immediately plastered onto her face, replacing the stressed-out look, her body instantly easing up as she spotted you. The heavy bags under her eyes were the only remaining dead giveaway that she had been overworking herself. She’s a hard worker, and that’s something you’ll always admire about her. “Y/N! What are you doing here?” Your smile grew as you pulled the roses out from behind your back. “I knew how terrible your week had been so, I was hoping if you had time, you’d go out with me for a bit. Oh, and I got you these.” You handed the flowers over in her direction and she instantly took them. She looked down at the flowers, clapping her hands together as she grabbed the roses carefully from your palms. “These are amazing Y/N, I love them. Oh, and of course I’ll go out with you, I’d never say no to that.” She pulled you in for a hug, wrapping her arms around your waist tightly. You wrapped your arms around her, patting her back gently. “I’m glad you like them, it was a last minute addition.” You said with a chuckle as she pulled away from the hug, smelling the roses. “I’m going to put these in a vase quickly, you’re welcome to come inside.” You gladly accepted the offer, seeing as the Autumn air was quite chilly.
Tumblr media
The sun was already beginning to set when you arrived at the first stop, a small Cafe, it made everything in sight prettier, in a delicate way, as it offered an orangey-pink hue. The Cafe was one of Robin’s favorite places to go, as you pulled into the parking lot you watched her eyes light up at the sight of it. You smiled, happy to see her happy. You parked the car and hopped out, Robin was already eagerly waiting outside of the car. You grabbed ahold of her hand and began to pull her toward the Cafe gently. “Come on! I’m starving.” You exclaimed, glancing back at her, grinning. You pushed open the door to the Cafe, readjusting your jacket as the bell atop the door rang, signaling someone had entered. The two of you were immediately met with the smell of bread and coffee. You both took deep breaths, savoring the familiar smell. It wasn’t too busy, there were a couple of friends and families seated in various places, talking quietly amongst themselves. “Hey there! Welcome. You two can take a seat wherever, I’ll be right with ya!” You turned to the middle-aged lady who was wearing a dress, it wasn’t fancy, but it fits right in with the Cafes theme, an apron tied around her waist, completing the look. You smiled, nodding. “Thank you,” you turned to Robin. “Where should we sit?” She looked around for a moment, before jumping slightly, an excited jump, she found the perfect spot. “Over here,” she said as she grabbed onto your hand, pulling you toward a table that had two chairs across from one another. It was right beside the window and wasn’t really close to any of the other customers. It had a nice view of the sunset. You smiled, pulling out Robin’s chair for her to take a seat, gesturing toward it, “m’lady.” She rolled her eyes, a goofy grin on her face as she sat down. “Why thank you, my dear.” The two of you laughed as you pushed her chair in, taking the seat across from her. “Alrighty!” The same lady who had greeted the two of you earlier was hurriedly walking toward your table, two menu’s in her hand. She set them down on the table, glancing between the two of you, smiling. “My name is Susan! here are some menus for you two, can I get y’all anything to drink to start off with?” She pulled her notebook out of the pocket of her apron, along with a pen. You nodded, clearing your throat, you knew having coffee would be a terrible idea this late at night, even if it smelled amazing, which it did. “I’ll have a water please.” Her smile grew as she turned to Robin. “And for you, my dear?” Robin gave her a small smile, glancing at the menu a few times. “I’ll just have water as well please.” Good choice, coffee and Robin don’t mix well together. Susan quickly wrote down the drink order in her notebook, closing it, pushing it back into her pocket, the pen as well. She clapped her hands together, “lovely! Your drinks will be right out!” “She seems nice,” Robin commented, causing you to chuckle. “Yeah, she does.”
Tumblr media
After the two of you finished your meal you left for your next spot, the final spot. You parked a little ways away from it, wanting to be able to walk there. The sun had gone down and it was now dark outside, the only thing lighting up your path would be street lights and the night sky. You got out of the car, zipping your jacket up, making sure to grab the backpack you had put in the car earlier from your back seat. Walking around to meet Robin on her side, shutting the door for her. “Where exactly are we?” She questioned, looking around. “A street,” You stated the obvious, nonchalantly. Robin turned toward you, raising an eyebrow. “Well, no shit dingus. Why are we here?” You laughed at her insult, holding out your hand for her to take. “Just come with me and you’ll see.” She glanced between your face and your hand a few times before sighing, giving in, and grabbing your hand. You smiled, victoriously as the two of you began walking. “I strongly dislike you sometimes, Y/N.” “That’s a lie and you know it.” You glanced toward her, catching the small smile she tried to hide from you. “Okay fine, but can you please tell me where we’re going?” She dragged out the please dramatically, like a toddler asking for their favorite thing. You held your free hand to your chin, pretending to think about it. “No.” She scoffed, looking at the ground. “You know how much I hate walking, I’m very clumsy and I constantly trip and fall over stuff and then I get embarrassed and-” “We’re almost there,” you grinned, cutting off her rambling. Most people found it to be a rather annoying trait of hers, sometimes even treating her poorly for it, but you loved it. It was one of your favorite things about her, you found it adorable. You stopped as your shoes were met with grass instead of concrete. You looked straight ahead, turning toward Robin, smiling softly. “We’re here.” The park. It was a big grassy field with a sidewalk that went all the way around it forming a wonky shaped loop, and a few benches scattered about alongside the sidewalk. Robin looked around, “the park?” You nodded, gesturing toward the grassy field, “just follow me.” The two of you found a quiet spot, away from any people, in the middle of the field. It was darker as well, the only thing lighting up the field was the moon, which was almost full. You let go of Robin’s hand, sliding the backpack off of your shoulder, onto the ground. “Right here looks good.” You stated, Robin looked up at the dark sky, the stars twinkling brightly. “This is… Amazing,” Robin said quietly, smiling. You unzipped the backpack, pulling a blanket out from it. You set it onto the ground, taking a seat on it. “Yeah, it is. Come sit.” You patted the free spot on the blanket beside you, which Robin gladly took. You pulled another blanket out of the backpack before laying down, staring straight up at the stars, Robin followed along and you threw the blanket lazily over her and yourself. You had one arm behind your head, using it as a pillow, and the other wrapped around Robin, pulling her closer. She snuggled into your side, happily gazing up at the stars. Her blue eyes were glimmering almost as brightly as the stars were above the two of you. She looked perfect to you at this very moment. Your plan of taking some of the stress away from her, even if it was momentarily, seemingly worked, and you were grateful for that. “Hey Y/N?” You heard her say quietly, to which you responded with a simple hm? The two of you kept your eyes on the night sky, admiring it. “Thank you, for everything. This made me feel a lot better, I needed a moment to just get away and forget about everything.” You smiled, finally turning your head to look over at her. “Of course, I had a lot of fun tonight. It’s been nice.” She nodded in agreement, looking toward you. “I love you Y/N.” Your smile grew as you felt the butterflies erupt in your stomach. “I love you too, Robin.” You placed a soft kiss on her head. The two of you spent the next few hours talking about random things and staring at the sky. Nothing else in that moment mattered, except for the two of you.

this is part of this series!!!
summary: eddie has his first test of high school. and hes alarmed by who visits him at lunch.
warnings: tests, self-hate, high school, if there's anything im missing pls let me know!
word count: 1.1k
not proofread!
A week later, Eddie found himself studying for a test. Normally, he would just go to class the day of the test, and hope that he guessed correctly, but this year was different. He had music playing softly in the background, which Wayne absolutely could not believe Eddie had his radio volume below the maximum. Eddie was studying the notes that he took in class. Notes. That HE took. Eddie was preparing nicely for his test tomorrow.
He stared and stared at diagrams of cells, hoping he could permanently laser the information into his brain. He wished he could just shove his notebook through his ear just so his brain could catch a better look. Then, maybe, he could get a passing grade.
Around midnight, Eddie’s written words seemed to blur into a giant word blurb, so he decided it would be best to simply go over the information one more time before school. This very well may have been the first time that Eddie was ready for a test. And he could not have been prouder of himself, just for trying.
Tumblr media
So, Eddie woke up that Tuesday morning and all but catapulted himself into his clothes just to get a little bit of extra study time. He flickered his eyes all across the written words and diagrams. He was going to do well, he told himself, he was going to do well. He examined his notebook with such laser focus he could have cut the entire thing in half. He had his bookbag on his back as he sat in his bed, studying. He kept his notebook in his hand as he heard Mary honk her horn, and as he walked to the car.
"Morning!"
"Good morning, Eddie!" In the past week, Eddie had learned that Mary had another sister, Caitlin, only this sister was younger than her. In fact, they were in the same grade.
"Morning," Eddie mumbled, still reading his notebook.
"Do you have a test today," he heard Mary ask Caitlin.
"Yeah I," she paused for a moment, "I studied last night."
"I can tell when you lie, just so you know."
Eddie read over the most recent sentence he had wrote, taking in the information. He knew he was going to pass this, so he closed the notebook, shoving it in his bookbag.
They made it to the school soon enough, and Mary dropped Eddie and Caitlin off at the door before parking. Eddie had time to prepare himself for the test that was just after lunch.
There was a sense of deja vu in his homeroom class. He felt it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The same kids, talking in the same groups at the same desks in the same classroom in the same school. He didn’t mind the deja vu. He embraced it, even. However, the same kids in the same groups meant Eddie was still the same kid with no group. He listened to the same person do the same announcement, and waited for the same classes, repeating the same information from last night.
Tumblr media
Eventually, lunch time struck, and Eddie made his way to the cafeteria. Luckily, Caitlin made sure he didn’t eat alone in the bathroom. He was just about to walk through the menacing brown doors, before a voice started calling to him.
“Hey, Munson, a little birdie told me you were going to come to Hellfire last week. ‘S all cool if you weren’t interested, but don’t lie to that Little Birdie.” A girl who looked like she was a junior made her way to Eddie hastily. She had long, black hair that looked well-cared for, and a shirt reading, “HELLFIRE CLUB,” adorned with different symbols or items relating to Dungeons and Dragons, and the sleeves cut off. ‘This must have been Kim,’ Eddie thought.
He didn’t know what to say when Kim was in front of him. He knew he probably looked like a scared little kid , but, truthfully, he was just nervous. He doesn’t quite know why it’s so different from when Mary approached him on the first day. Maybe because he thought that would only be one conversation. Maybe because Mary hadn’t been catching him in the middle of a lie. But now Eddie felt he had spun his own web of lies and trapped himself.
“Hello? Earth to Eddie?” The girl's voice had changed from an almost mad tone to a more confused one.
“Oh, sorry, sorry,” He doesn’t know why he repeated sorry. ‘That was a dumb decision,’ he thought, ‘she probably thinks I’m a weirdo.’
“It’s all good. Just wanted to tell you not to lie to Mary; she’s sensitive sometimes. Have a nice lunch, Munson.” She began to turn around.
“I was going to go.” Strange confidence boost. “Just got nervous.”
“You shouldn’t be. Truthfully, mostly everyone in Hellfire are nerds who can’t speak to women without having a heart attack, but it’s in a good way, I think.”
Eddie chuckled a little at that. “We have a meeting tomorrow. You should come, it’ll be fun, promise.”
“I’ll be there!” He would be there. He would force himself, no matter what.
“If you aren't, I reserve the right to pluck your eyebrows!” She smiled before turning around. ‘What an odd threat,’ Eddie thought. However, he went on with his day, waiting for his test.

Ding! Ding! The bell. The bell signifying that the test he went blurry-visioned studying for last night was mere minutes away. The last group of students filed in just after the late bell, dispersing to their seats.
The boy who was sitting next to Eddie was nice. Eddie thinks that he played soccer last year, but he isn’t too sure. However, he was an average student. He made Cs and Bs, along with an occasional A. Cheating was not going to be an option. But, Eddie didn’t need cheating. He studied for this. He was prepared. He was terrified, but prepared
His brain was buzzing and he was on the verge of shaking as Mr. Robertson handed out stapled sheets of paper. His lips were moving, but all Eddie could hear was the buzzing of the fluorescent lighting and clock at the front of the room. He shouldn’t be this nervous. He studied. He knows this.
Eddie didn’t even think he would have started if he didn’t notice anyone writing. He shot his eyes down at the papers in front of him. Name and date. The easiest questions.
Microorganisms and cells. Easy. Or it was supposed to be. He studied. He was supposed to know this. He needed to know this. But he didn’t. It’s like all of the questions were from a book he didn’t read or note he didn’t take. He was supposed to do better this year. Why couldn’t he do better?

Steve told them to put a jacket on. In fact, he even brought a jacket in case they changed their mind. However, they didn't change their mind, and the Hawkins cold got to (Y/N). They regret not listening to Steve beforehand because, maybe if they had, they wouldn’t be stuck in bed with a blanket one minute and without the next.
Being sick was just disgusting. Feeling like shit, looking shit, it was a nightmare. Not to mention the mountains of tissue in the surrounding area all because it was just too bothersome to get up. And the fever and chills were two of the worst parts. The constant on and off again, will-they-won't-they with a cozy blanket could rival that of a cheesy romantic movie. It was sickening in the worst way possible.
However, Steve made things better. Obviously, he couldn’t cure every illness ever with the snap of his fingers, but he did make things more enjoyable and bearable. He didn’t care about getting sick (which he was very much advised to care and stay away for just a week, if that.) And, he was willing to do anything, even if (Y/N) insisted that it wasn't necessary.
“Please, Steve,” their voice was coarse, presumably from all the coughing done in the past 2 days. “Just,” a terrible, mucus filled cough interrupted, “want to do something. Not even that sick anymore.” (Y/N) could barely even keep their eyes open. They weren’t even tired, but it was just too much effort to keep eyelids that felt like they weighed 100 pounds open.
Steve grabbed the thermometer off of the bedside table and gently placed it below their tongue, paying close attention to where the red liquid went up to. “Sure, you aren’t that sick with a fever of 102. I can put in a movie for you if you really want something to do.” They responded to the high fever with a groan. They just wanted to be better already. Steve was very cautious when anyone was sick, but, when it was (Y/N), everything was amplified by a factor of 10. He barely even wanted them getting up on their own, afraid they may fall and hurt themselves. It was sweet really, But, to them, it got annoying quickly since they couldn’t do anything. “Are you hungry? It’s getting late.”
“Kind of. But, I can get something myself.” (Y/N) tried to get up, but not only were they too tired, but Steve was already moving to the kitchen.
“Absolutely not. You can barely sit up; there’s no way I'm letting you go to the kitchen!” Steve was a terrible cook. He could probably explode a microwave without even trying if he used it more often, so, as soon as Steve couldn’t see them, they began attempting to get up just to help.
Tumblr media
In the kitchen, Steve had already taken out a can of chicken noodle soup, beginning to heat it up on the stove. He knew he wasn’t at the professional chef level of cooking, but what could go wrong simply heating up soup. He couldn’t think of anything, at least.
Soon enough, the soup was ready, and grabbed the pot to pour it into a bowl. The only issue was that Steve could not pour very well, and, while most of the soup did end up in the bowl, some of the scalding hot soup ended up on Steve’s hand.
"Fuck!" (Y/N) heard from the kitchen. They were now just at the edge of the bed, struggling to even get there. However, the moment Steve yelled out what sounded painfully, they began making their way to the kitchen as fast as possible, which still was not very fast. They were still aching and sore everywhere, but at least they were able to get up to see if Steve was okay and move just a bit.
“Steve are you oh…What happened?” Sitting on a stepladder, Steve was bandaging his left hand with a kitchen towel.
“I made chicken noodle soup?” Steve smiled, looking away from his hand. “You need to get back in bed. I don't want you to get hurt.”
“I promise you, I won’t get hurt. It’s not like I can’t walk; it’s just achy.”
“Fine, at least take your soup with you. I’ll be there in a minute.”
And just a few minutes later, Steve was laying next to (Y/N), ice pack on one hand, and spoon in the other. Fast Times, which they had put on, was playing in the background. They knew Steve loved the movie, and it was by no means the worst movie of all time.
Tumblr media
After they had both finished their soup, bowls stacked on the bedside table, Steve cuddled closer to (Y/N).
“Steve, you’ll catch my germs. You can’t get sick too.” They brought their shoulder up in an attempt to block Steve.
“You act like us even being in the same bed isn’t giving me all your nasty cold germs.”
“Stop making good points. I don’t like when you do that.” They brought their shoulder down, and reached their hand out to hold Steve’s homemade-bandage wrapped hand. If they brought their hand up just a little further, they could feel how soft Steve’s skin was, which was almost unusually soft.
Steve snatched his bandaged hand away from (Y/N). “Don’t want you catching a cold and a burn, babe.”
“Steve, you can’t catch a burn from someone else’s already burnt hand.” They laughed through the sentence. “Even if you could, I think your hand is thoroughly protected enough.”
“Oh, in that case, hold away!” He extended his hand back out, which (Y/N) gladly held close to them as Fast Times played, rubbing their thumb along the fuzziness of the towel and the softness of Steve’s skin.
“And Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“Please never make chicken noodle soup again.”
“I can promise not to burn my hand again, but no promises on the soup.”

A ringing sound pierced through Y/N’s ears as they let out a groan, grabbing a pillow and covering their face with it, pushing it against their ears in an attempt to make the noise stop. They assumed it was some weird symptom regarding them being sick, and they weren’t 100% with it right now as they kept drifting in and out of sleep. However, this caused a problem in itself as they now couldn’t breathe. Y/N threw the pillow to the side, annoyed, sweat droplets forming on their forehead. After what felt like an agonizingly long time, the ringing stopped. Relieved, Y/N shut their eyes, a shiver running down their body as they pulled their comforter closer to them.
Y/N’s eyes shot back open when the ringing started again, except this time they realized it was coming from the front door. They let out a groan as they placed their hand on their forehead, their palm had an icy touch against their hot forehead, causing them to remove it. Y/N slowly sat up, letting out a few coughs. They crawled out of bed, their legs feeling weak as they took a moment to collect themselves before heading toward the front door. For a third time, the bell rang. “Son of a bitch,” they mumbled to themselves before raising their voice into a raspy, attempted shout that sounded more like something dying. “Just hold on!”
Y/N threw the front door open being momentarily blinded by the bright sunlight, they squint their eyes shut, waiting for them to adjust to the light. They were irritated, and about to burn into the person who couldn’t be bothered to leave a note on the door when they realized it was their boyfriend, Jason, who did a double take when he saw their current situation. “Jason? Why are you here?”
“You weren’t at school, I was worried. What the hell happened to you? You look awful.” Y/N scoffed, rolling their eyes. “Wow, you have such a way with words. That is exactly what everyone wants to hear from their boyfriend,” they were interrupted by a sneeze, covering their mouth with the sleeve of their sweater, another shiver running down their body as they continued. “I’m sick if that wasn’t obvious enough.”
He frowned at Y/N as he reached the back of his hand to their forehead, checking to see if they had a temperature. Normally, Y/N would slap his hand away and say something about them being fine, but today? They honestly couldn’t give a shit. “You’re burning up, can I come in?” Y/N stepped aside, opening the door wider as Jason stepped in. He wasted no time grabbing their hand gently, guiding them to the living room sofa. He sat Y/N down, taking a step back.
“I’ll be right back, I’m going to make you some soup and get you water and medicine, okay? Just rest. You’ll feel better in no time.”
Y/N frowned as they stood back up slowly, not wanting their legs to give out on them. “You shouldn’t stay here, you’ll end up sick as well.” He stared at Y/N, grabbing their shoulders and gently pushing them back onto the sofa. “It’s fine Y/N, I promise. Just worry about yourself for now, okay? I don’t care if I get sick, I want to help you.” He smiled at them, planting a light kiss on their forehead. Y/N watched him walk off to the kitchen, a small smile on their face as they leaned back into the sofa, grabbing a throw blanket from the armrest.
It didn’t take long for Jason to return with the soup, maybe five or ten minutes. “Alright,” he began as he set everything down. “A fresh bowl of soup, straight from the can. Well, not straight from it, it had to go in a pot first but you know what I mean. A glass of water, and some medicine for your fever.” Y/N gave him a grateful smile, and grabbed the medicine, gulping it down with some of the water. They cringed as they took it, but they knew it would help. They quickly finished off the water, placing the cup down on the coffee table.
“Thank you, for all of this,” Y/N said as they carefully took the warm bowl of chicken noodle soup into their hands, eating it slowly. Jason took a seat beside Y/N, shaking his head. “You’re welcome but, you don’t have to thank me. I wanted to do this.”
“I know, but it still feels right. The soup is good by the way.” He made himself comfortable on the couch, smirking. “What can I say? I’m just great at everything I do.” Y/N rolled their eyes, chuckling. “I’m over here dying and you think now is a good time to boost your ego? Truly sad to see.”
“Hey, you aren’t going to die, not on my watch at least. That would be terrible for my reputation.” Y/N gasped, feigning hurt as they lightly slapped his shoulder. The two of them laughed at how stupid they are for a few moments before they eventually calmed down, catching their breath.
Y/N set down the bowl of soup that was practically empty, letting out a yawn. “Tired?” Jason questioned and they simply nodded. He smiled softly, opening his arms. “Come here,” he said, and Y/N eagerly listened, scooting closer to him, readjusting the blanket so that both of them could use it. He wrapped his arm around Y/N’s shoulders, their head resting on his shoulder.
He turned the TV on quietly as Y/N closed their eyes. He kissed the top of their head, admiring them momentarily, even when they thought they looked their worst, he thought they looked stunning. “I love you, Y/N.” He said quietly, almost in a whisper.
“I love you too, Jason.” Y/N managed to mumble out before falling asleep.

carnival games and fear

The carnival had come to Indianapolis once again. Eddie had gone once when he was a kid, and it was fun, but he hasn’t exactly had a great desire to go back. (Y/N), on the other hand, loved the carnival, and they went every year. This year, they wanted nothing more than to take their boyfriend, Eddie to the carnival. So, when they heard it was in town all the following week, they practically bolted to Eddie’s place.
(Y/N) knocked on the door, hoping at least someone was home. Soon enough, Eddie’s uncle, Wayne, opened the door. “Morning, Mr. Munson! Is Eddie home,” (Y/N) greeted. Although no one would think it based on his exterior, Wayne was a sweet man, and he really liked (Y/N). They made Eddie happy, and that’s all that mattered.
“Morning, kid. He’s in his room.” However, Wayne was most definitely not a morning person, no matter who he was talking to. (Y/N) rushed their way to Eddie’s room.
“Eds, Eds!” (Y/N) walked into Eddie’s room where he was laying in one of his millions of band t-shirts and a pair of black and white gym shorts with one arm behind his head, one laying across his stomach, and one knee bent. He was mesmerizing just like this, like a sunset or expertly crafted painting. “I have an idea!” They plopped themselves on the end of the mattress as Eddie fully sat up. His hair was an absolute mess, some strands flipped over to the other side of his head while some were simply sticking out.
“What’s that idea, poot,” Eddie asked. Eddie found (Y/N) to be the most beautiful human being on the planet when they’re excited about something. He found them beautiful during any other emotion too, but it was just something about the passion in their eyes when they talked about something they enjoyed. They were like how love felt. They made his heart beat 10 times faster than it normally did. And his heart still beat 10 times faster when (Y/N) flicked him in the middle of his forehead. Eddie then flung his head back and clutched his forehead. “Agh! You’ve wounded me! I don’t think I’ll make it,” he playfully cried.
(Y/N) squint their eyes at Eddie. He could act really stupid sometimes, but it wasn’t the bad stupid. It was the good, funny stupid. “That nickname is long overdue for a change, Eds.”
“Eh, don’t think so.”
(Y/N) fake-pouted at Eddie’s response. “Anyways, I was wondering if you would want to go to the carnival with me next Sunday? I go every year; it’s always so much fun. I’m sure you’d love it!” And how could Eddie say no when they looked so happy.
“Of course, poot. Anything for the royal princess of Hawkins-landia,” he put on a fake royal knight accent for his last sentence, which made (Y/N) laugh.
Tumblr media
The following Sunday could not have come sooner. Even though it was barely even a week’s worth of waiting, (Y/N) felt like it was months, years even. But, the day that they were finally going to the carnival came eventually. (Y/N) practically sprung up as soon as they realized they were awake, looking over at their calendar to make sure today was indeed the day. And it was. All the previous days had tiny checkmarks next to the number, but today’s had a heart in the middle of the square. They knew Eddie probably wasn’t awake at 7 in the morning, and they didn’t quite know what made them wake up this early. Maybe it was the excitement.
(Y/N) took their time getting ready for the carnival, knowing it was unreasonable to leave this early, even with the hour long drive, because the real fun happens just as the Sun finally sets. They even took breaks to eat or just do something to distract them. And it worked out. They were ready at just the perfect time to head to Eddie’s. They made their way down the stairs with haste, practically ripping the front door off of its hinges to be greeted by Eddie, seemingly about to knock on the door.
“M’lady.” Eddie bowed.
“Eddie, it’s like 90 degrees outside,” (Y/N) referred to his choice of black jeans and a black band t-shirt that had sleeves that went to his elbows.
“And your point, poot?” He looked down at his outfit. He didn’t think it was that hot. At least not yet, it wasn’t.
“Don’t want you to die of heatstroke at the carnival. That’d be devastating!”
“Would you rather me go naked?”
“No! No. God, no, you’d get arrested! Just get in the car, Eddie!” (Y/N)’s eyes went wide before looking straight at the ground in embarrassment.
The two made their way to the car, Eddie getting in the passenger’s side since he drove like an absolute maniac, and began their hour-long road trip to Indianapolis. They took turns with which tape they put in, and made a deal not to complain if one played a song the other didn’t like. And that's how things went until they finally got to the carnival, with the occasional conversation or singing.
Tumblr media
It was just around 5 when they got into the carnival, which gave them about 3 hours until the sunset, and time flew by quickly.
After getting tickets, the two ran over to all the carnival games. Eddie’s main goal was to win something for (Y/N). He wanted to see their eyes light up like every single star in the sky.
“Shit,” Eddie muttered as the last ball hopped out of the bucket. He didn’t get a single one in, and it was getting embarrassing how terrible he was at carnival games. Sure, they were rigged, but he’s seen a lot of people with at least the medium prizes. All (Y/N) was carrying were the tiny, keychain prizes.
“Eds, why don’t you let me try,” (Y/N) suggested. They knew they probably couldn’t win one of the big prizes, but honestly the prizes didn’t even matter. It was just fun to spend time with Eddie and at the carnival.
“You try here, but I am going to win you the big prize at this next game right here.” He pointed to the next game over, it was the only game that you hadn’t played yet. Plus, it was almost time for sunset. The timing was perfect.
“You? Win? At that? I thought you had some vendetta against all of basketball,” (Y/N) chuckled through their words. They had never known Eddie to even go near a basketball, let alone touch one.
“Yes, but I have all the right motivations, Lady (Y/L/N),” he started, “the next time you see me I will have a giant teddy bear stuffed in my arms.”
Soon enough, Eddie was handed a basketball by the attendant. Truthfully, he had no idea what he was doing. He couldn’t remember if he had ever even laid his hand near a basketball. But, he still threw the ball into the hoop. How shocking. Now, all he had to do was get two more in. Easier said than done. At least he knew now he would at least get a small prize.
He actually aimed his next shot. Although he didn’t know how to aim it, he still tried. He threw the ball just like last time, but it felt like the ball stayed in the air for so much longer. The ball hit the side of the rim, bouncing up, yet into the hoop. Eddie couldn’t believe it himself. (Y/N) wasn’t just going to carry around a small pile of keychain stuffed animals; he would at least get a medium prize.
The next ball suddenly weighed a ton of bricks. Eddie felt like his hands were slowly crumbling to the ground from the sheer weight of the ball, even if it did weigh the exact same as the previous two. He gulped as he aimed his shot, still not quite sure what to do. He did the same thing as the last time, throwing the ball just as the previous one. He felt he was waiting hours for the ball to even get close to the hoop. For a moment, he thought the ball was simply stopped in mid-air, but it wasn’t. The ball made its way to the rim, and it was as if the ball was dancing in circles, momentum slowing the more it made laps around the rim. Until it fell. It fell right into the hoop, perfectly, if he did say so for someone who has never even touched a basketball.
Eddie tried not to cheer too loud when he was handed the bear in case (Y/N) heard. He wanted to surprise them, and he could see them from where he was standing. They were looking up at the ferris wheel, assumingly waiting on Eddie. He tiptoed his way over bear in hand, and crept up just behind them. It was a wonder that they hadn’t noticed him yet.
“Boo,” he yelled, just over their shoulder. (Y/N) jumped back with fright.
“Holy fuck, Eds! You scared me! Wait, did you actually win that?” They pointed at the bear in Eddie’s arms.
“Of course! It’s all yours, poot,” he extended his arms, bear in hand. (Y/N) hugged both the bear and Eddie in one giant hug. They didn’t expect him to win anything, especially not when it involved a basketball.
“Thank you so much. Love you, Eddie,” the words were muffled into Eddie’s shirt, but he still heard them.
“Love you, too, (Y/N).” Eddie was never really big on love, but he definitely was now.
When they both pulled away from the hug, Eddie was staring at them with a stupid grin. (Y/N) was hugging the bear tightly while staring back at Eddie.
“What are you staring at,” they asked.
“What are you gonna name it?" Eddie pointed at the bear.
"Didn't answer my question, but I think Eddie."
"Eddie? I'm Eddie. No room for two Eddies."
"But, this," (Y/N) held up the bear, "is Eddie Munson Junior. Meet your son, he's 100% stuffing."
"It is a pleasure to meet you Eddie Munson Junior, my son." Eddie bowed before coming up to shake the bear's hand, or paw.
(Y/N) reached their ear to the bear's mouth. "Eddie Munson Junior says he would like to go to the ferris wheel." The Sun was mere inches from setting, and (Y/N) knew the view would be beautiful on the ferris wheel. Plus, the line wasn't that long, surprisingly.
Eddie gulped as he looked over at the ferris wheel. It couldn't be that high, right? Maybe it wasn't bad, and (Y/N) and their semi-son wanted to get on. And maybe they wouldn't even be at the top that long. "Anything for my son," he put on a big smile.
Tumblr media
Eddie never prays. He just wasn't religious. But he definitely prayed as he got on the little cart that was about to go what now looked very high. But there was no backing out now. He sat across from (Y/N) and Eddie Munson Junior, (Y/N) with a smile on their face and Eddie Junior with, well, fur.
The ferris wheel crept it's way up to the top, going entirely too slow for Eddie's liking and creaking entirely too much. What if they fell at this moment? They would be toast!
When they got to the top, Eddie nearly shit himself out of fear. It was terrifyingly high, and as beautiful as the sunset was, he was more focused on the ground. The ground that was so incredibly far down that it seemed miles and miles away. So, when he heard the final creak, and they suddenly stopped, Eddie was even more terrified than before.
"Oh shit," he squeaked. He squeaked like a mouse when it saw a cat.
"Eddie, are you good," (Y/N) asked. They had never heard Eddie squeak like that before.
"No," he squeaked out again before biting down on his wrist hard and straightening himself in his seat. "Dear God, we're so high up," he muffled through his hand.
"Eds, it'll be fine. Just broke down for a minute. It's happened before; it'll be fine. Just look at me. Don't look down." (Y/N) tried to catch Eddie's attention to stop him from looking down. They had never known he was afraid of heights. "Here, hold Eddie Munson Junior. I think he's scared too." They gave Eddie Junior to the first Eddie, which he immediately took and grabbed tightly.
"It's okay, Eddie Junior. It'll be fine. Even if this wheel does collapse and we fall to our death, you'll be fine because you're made of stuffing."
"Eddie! It's not going to collapse! This happens all the time!"
"Are you sure? Because it doesn't seem like this thing is going to move anytime soon!"
Barely even a minute later, the ferris wheel began moving slightly quicker than before. Eddie was still tense and clutching to Eddie Junior like his life depended on it. And he stayed in the same position until they were allowed to step off. Only then, did he seem more relaxed.
"I am never putting me or my son through that ever again."

Eddie felt out of place. He had always felt out of place, but it was so much worse walking through the doors of Hawkins High. All of the older kids had already found their friends, and everyone his age still had their friends from middle school. But not him. The only people that talked to him in middle school were, well, still in middle school. And he didn’t know anyone here. He didn’t have any siblings or older friends like everyone else. So, yeah, he felt out of place.
He just barely passed last year, but he swore high school was going to be different. He wasn’t going to skip. He was going to focus. He was going to study. He was going to work harder. He wasn’t going to coast on the line of failure.  So, he found himself sitting in his first period class, listening to all of his classmates talk amongst themselves as he sat somewhere close to the corner, picking at his cuticles while waiting for the morning to start.
Tumblr media
The hallway felt so loud, yet so silent. It, like the classroom, was filled with students talking amongst themselves while Eddie clung to the wall so as to not draw any attention to himself. He noticed a very…happy girl coming towards him. But, who was he kidding, she was probably walking towards one of her friends who just happened to be walking directly behind him.
“Excuse me!” Her voice was cheerful, another thing that Eddie noticed. He just wished that she was not talking to him. “Excuse me! Are you new here?” She waved at Eddie with a bright smile. She was most definitely talking to him.
“Yea,” he caught himself on his word, “Yes.” He didn’t know if she was some stuck-up about manners and how words were said. Better to be safe than sorry, he thought.
“Oh, great! Your face wasn’t that familiar, so I was just wondering. I’m Mary Robinson,” she reached her hand out towards him, “what class do you have next? Oh, and what’s your name? Sorry, I get carried away sometimes.” The entire time she spoke, she held a smile on her face. But, Eddie couldn’t complain. It seemed she was just trying to be nice.
Eddie took her outreached hand for a simple handshake. “M’names Eddie Munson,” he paused to take out a sheet of paper, checking his schedule, “got Mr. Campbell’s class next.” Truthfully, Eddie had no idea where any classroom was. He only found his first period because he overheard a group of kids mention the teacher’s name.
“Do you need help finding his room? It’s no problem for me,” she offered. This very well may have been the sweetest girl in the entirety of Hawkins. Nearly everyone else was walking with someone, and he was practically the only one not. That very clearly meant he should not be spoken to. It meant he was no good.
Eddie contemplated her offer. He had no idea where this class was, but he was also terrified to embarrass himself. However, he remembered his vow. No skipping. “Sure,” he agreed.
“Great! You can follow me.” She motioned at Eddie to follow her, and he did. No skipping. “So, do you have any interests? There’s a lot of good teams and clubs here if you do.”
“Don’t think any school would have a club for what I like to do in my free time.” Eddie worded that very wrong. He realized it as soon as he said it. Stupid as usual, Eddie, he thought.
“Oh, God, you don’t, like, murder people on the side do you?” Her eyes widened as she spoke. Well, she went much darker than Eddie did.
“No, worse, actually. Dungeons & Dragons.” Eddie doesn’t know why he mentioned D&D. He knew she would immediately be repulsed and leave him to find Mr. Campbell’s room by himself.
But, then, he heard a giggle. Her giggle. She wasn’t leaving him to fend for himself in the jungle that is Hawkins High School. She found him funny. “Well, you might be surprised to find out we do have a club for that. ‘S called Hellfire. The,” Mary paused for a moment, “Dungeon Master is really nice. You should check it out!”
Eddie was in pure shock. A school like Hawkins High? Have a Dungeons and Dragons club? It just sounded too good to be true. “I’ll check it out sometime.” However, he wasn’t going to hurt this girl’s feelings. She seemed genuine.
“Great! I’ll tell Kim!” She pointed to an open door already filled with students with more filing in as they stood. “Here’s Mr. Campbell’s class. All the other 9th grade classrooms are in the area, so you should be good for today and tomorrow. Bye, Eddie!” She waved at him before turning around to go wherever she needed.
“Thanks for the help! Bye, Mary,” Eddie mirrored Mary’s final words before turning on her heels.
Mary turned back on her heels, now walking backwards. “No problem!” And she went back to walking normally. And Eddie went to class. No skipping.

By lunch, Eddie had still only spoken to Mary. Truthfully, he was terrified to speak to anyone else. What if he said the wrong thing? What if he comes on too strong? What if he comes on too soft? What if they just don’t like him? And, normally, Eddie wouldn’t care about such a thing as whether people liked him, but, for some strange reason, he wanted to be liked.
So, Eddie found himself sitting in one of the boy’s restroom stalls, eating away at his stale bread peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Wayne had apologized profusely for not being able to afford a new loaf of bread this week, but Eddie didn’t care. Wayne tried his hardest to support Eddie. He always did, even though he didn’t know he was going to end up with a 10 year old so suddenly. But that’s what mattered to Eddie. Wayne loved him. And this peanut butter and jelly sandwich was made with stale bread, peanut butter, jelly, and, most importantly, love, as cheesy as it sounds.
However, the bathroom was loud. Very loud. Groups of teenage boys coming in all through lunch just to fuck around and mess up the entire bathroom. Poor janitors, Eddie thought.
“Knock, Knock! Who’s in there,” one of the many boys banged harshly on the stall door. The door lock rattled from the force, and Eddie wondered just how strong these jocks, he assumed, could be.
“Probably some lame ass freshman with no friends eating all alone,” another voice jeered. That’s exactly what Eddie was. Some lame ass freshman with no friends, eating all alone. These guys must have some good intuition, Eddie thought.
“Or some guy taking a massive shit.” The group erupted into laughter at this. Maybe they didn’t have good intuition.
Eddie didn’t dignify them with a response. He may not have been smart, but he definitely wasn’t dumb.
“What? Cat got your tongue in there,” the original voice spoke again. Eddie simply rolled his eyes and continued to eat his peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
After a few minutes of simply goofing about, the group eventually left and Eddie eventually finished his sandwich. Although, he waited just a few more minutes in case they were waiting outside before leaving.

By the time his first day was officially over, he thought about stopping by the Hellfire room, since he was told they were having some beginning of the year meeting. Maybe he should just talk to the leader some other day instead of barging in on their meeting. Mary told him this meeting was where anyone interested in joining could visit, but he would still feel like an intruder, so he simply walked out of the school doors, and made his way home.
As he turned the corner, he noticed a yellow car slow next to him. "D'you need a ride, Eddie? Looks like it might rain, and it wouldn't be good to get sick right after the first day, right?" Mary leaned her head out of her car with a bright smile. Truth be told, he didn't want anyone to find out he lived in the trailer park. He was perfectly content living there, but he was scared that if anyone found out he'd be tortured for the rest of his school days.
"No, I'm good. Thanks for asking, though," he smiled back at Mary as he spoke.
"Are you sure? It's no big deal if do want a ride, but I won't press on it." As the last word left her mouth, Eddie felt rain fall onto his head. Knowing Hawkins, it was only a matter of minutes before Eddie, his clothes, and his books were all soaked. Having one person know where he lived wouldn't be that bad, right? And Mary seemed like she wouldn't tell anyone. "Well?"
"On second thought, it wouldn't hurt." Eddie watched as Mary unlocked the passenger door of her car.
"Alright, get in," she let out a small laugh as she spoke. Eddie walked over to the passenger door with haste, opening the door and practically jumping in the car before he could get anymore rain on him or in Mary's car. "Thank you for choosing Mary's Taxi Services! Where are you headed," she asked, putting on a fake New York accent.
Eddie paused before he spoke. He was already in the car, and it gave no use to lie. "You know the Forest Hills Trailer Park," he asked. He noticed Mary's eyes light up as he mentioned the trailer park.
"Know it?" She chuckled. "I live there too." Eddie certainly was not expecting that, but it definitely gave him some relief. He never would have thought Mary lived where he lived. Her clothes looked nice and her hair was neat. "You look shocked. What? No other kid in Hawkins can live there except you?" She poked him for emphasis.
"No! No, it's just that, just that you look really nice. Like your clothes and hair," he tried to defend himself quickly. He fiddled with his nails after he spoke, nervous as to how he might have upset her.
"Just messing with you, Eddie. The clothes used to be my older sister's and, truthfully, I just use water for my hair." She smiled as she ruffled Eddie's hair.
Shortly after that, Mary turned into the trailer park, letting Eddie out just before the first trailer. Eddie walked up to his front door, taking out his keys to open the door.

Wayne was sitting on the couch with tea in his favorite mug when Eddie opened the door. He was already dressed for work, which he would be leaving for in the next couple of hours. Eddie hated being alone at night, but it’s not even a small price for the bills being paid. And Eddie needed to get a job soon anyways.
“How was the first day, kid,” Wayne asked. Wayne cared, even if he didn’t know that much about Eddie and what all he liked. He knew Eddie was a sweet kid and he knew he cared for Eddie like he was his own child, that’s about it.
“Fine, didn’t have much trouble finding my classes,” Eddie answered. He let his accent run a little loose at home. His wasn’t as thick as Wayne’s or his dad’s, but he had picked up a slight twang in certain words. But, he did try his best to mask it at school, and he didn’t quite know why. As much as he tried, though, the accent did come out when he got excited.
“Congratulations on the first day of high school, kid. Practically all grown up now.” Wayne was happy to see Eddie blossom into the young man he had become over the years. It seemed like just yesterday he was looking into Eddie’s big baby eyes wondering how in the hell his very immature, 17 year old brother was going to take care of this fragile baby. Now, he could see his wonders were very much valid, but that baby was very much not fragile.
Just as any normal day, Wayne left for the plant just around 5:30, leaving Eddie on his own for dinner. So, Eddie made his way to the kitchen, reaching for a simple microwavable dinner to fix. Eddie hated cooking with all of his heart. He was sure he would blow up the entire trailer park if he were to cook without supervision.
As the microwave buzzed, Eddie made his way to his room, pushing his Sad Wings of Destiny tape into his radio, blasting it to the point where the entirety of Hawkins must be able to hear. But, Eddie didn’t care. The music drowned out the silence, and the beeping microwave, which Eddie forgot about very quickly.
He all but ran into the kitchen hoping that his dinner wasn’t already cold, and thank goodness he hadn’t forgotten for long. So, he brought his dinner to the couch, chomping away at the heaven that was artificial macaroni and cheese. All alone.
