The Calendar of Monte Cristo: Chapter 40
c.1808: Birth of Emmanuel Herbault. [R]
c.1813: Birth of Julie Morrel. [R]
1829: Danglars is made a baron by King Charles X. [E]
c.1829: Marriage of Emmanuel Herbault and Julie Morrel. [R]
1837: Emmanuel and Julie Herbault take up residence in the Rue Meslay. [R]
21 May 1838: Albert hosts a breakfast for his friends to introduce them to the Count of Monte Cristo. [E]
The Count’s statement that he’s known Luigi Vampa for more than ten years contradicts Pastrini’s account of Vampa’s career, in which their first meeting took place only a few years ago, on the very day Vampa left his sheep and became a bandit. I’m inclined to think it’s more likely that Pastrini’s story had been adjusted for increased drama than that the Count is lying for no reason, but either way it makes fitting everything together more difficult.

Hi, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is on sale for SIX DOLLARS.
That's all three games, almost all the DLCs (rip, Pinnacle Station) including weapon and armor packs, for six goddamn dollars.

i think a lot of people would be happier if they viewed labels like homosexual and transgender as social technologies rather than identities

I think that the real essence of a 'trans' story isn't actually about gender at all, so much as it's about going through a transition from one state where you're miserable and unhappy and wish for death or feel like you're already dead to another radically different state where...you're content. You're just content. You had something chronically wrong with you, like a painful screeching that just becomes the background noise of your existence and then...it's gone. You are, in some ineffable cosmic sense, where you belong.

Today is Sir Terry's Birthday. In a times like this I miss him more than ever. But I can always open a book and go wander into Discworld.
And, well, “It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”

Look, we joke a lot, but really, "you were born evil, wretched, worse than the scum of the earth, and it took killing a god to make you salvageable, so now you'd better be grateful to that god and thank him 10,000 times a day for it and fill your thoughts with him 24/7 and abide by the letter of his every word, lest you suffer unimaginable torture for all of eternity" is a truly horrendous thing to believe about yourself and other people

That's a fucking seagull
I have to assume this is a mistake and they actually meant to use the dove of peace rather than the seabird of petty theft, but it's not an inapt symbol for the type of Christian-ish doctrine that represents God as a jumped-up Santa Claus

I must not mock Gen Alpha. Mocking Gen Alpha is the mind killer. Mocking Gen Alpha is the little-death that brings total generational solidarity obliteration. I will engage with Gen Alpha lovingly. I will permit them to be cringe. And when they grow up I will turn my eye to their accomplishments. Where mocking has gone there will be nothing. Only generational solidarity remains

The Calendar of Monte Cristo: Chapter 39
c.1808: Birth of Raoul de Château-Renaud. [R]
5 September 1836 or 1837: Maximilien Morrel saves Château-Renaud’s life following the siege of Constantine. [E]
20 May 1838: News arrives in Paris that Don Carlos has taken up residence in Bourges. [R]
21 May 1838: Albert hosts a breakfast for his friends to introduce them to the Count of Monte Cristo. Château-Renaud brings Maximilien Morrel along. [E]
The Algerian city of Constantine was besieged by the French in 1836 and again in 1837; the first attempt was a failure and ended in a French retreat, but the second was successful and ended in the capture of the city. The siege Château-Renaud recalls was presumably the first, since he mentions the retreat. One small problem: his meeting with Morrel during the retreat explicitly took place on 5 September, which doesn’t fit either siege: the first was in November and the second in October.
There’s a similar issue with Debray’s news about Don Carlos. The date is explicitly stated in this chapter to be 21 May, and the year 1838, but Don Carlos didn’t even start negotiating with the French until the following year, and didn’t take up residence in Bourges until September 1839.
