An expression used to indicate that the act mentioned in the preceding statement is completely done.

(In addition to the fact that an action is completed, this structure also includes the speaker’s feeling, which can be 1) happiness, satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment, a sense of relief, good surprise about finally completing a task and getting rid of a burden, or 2) saddness, frustration, dissatisfaction, discontent(ment), complaint,bad surprise that something happened in a way that the speaker did not want or expect.)

It’s attached to the infinitive verb stem of either a descriptive or processive verbs, and the verb tense is expressed through it (the infinitive of a verb is when it doesn't have the polite form attached to it; in this case, it's the present one we refer to).

Note that whatever verb you use with this pattern, the translation will always be related to the verb you use, and not to 버리다 (which would mean to throw away, if used on its own), as it’s only used to emphasize. That means you don’t have to add the actual meaning of this verb to the sentence. when you want to emphasize that an action has ended completely, you add the verb 버리다 to the infinitive and conjugate the verb. It basically adds feelings of either relief or regret to the sentence, most of the time.

An expression used to indicate that the same situation repeats.

Depending on intimacy and social relations, the terminating ending of the verb can be used as follows.

Present tense 한다,해>해요>합니다

Past tense 했다,했어>했어요>했습니다

By attaching ~고는 하다/~곤 하다 to a verb, you can indicate that the same action occurs repeatedly but not very frequently. As the action occurs repeatedly, but not frequently, there is usually some indication of the situation that would prompt the infrequent action to occur. you would usually see more information indicating what specific situation would prompt these actions to occur.

Because these actions aren’t occurring all the time, adverbs that indicate an action sometimes occurs are often used in these sentences. Commonly used in sentences with ~고는 하다 /~곤 하다 are 가끔씩, 이따금 and 종종.

It is possible to conjugate all of these sentences to the past. Doing so indicates that the action happened regularly but infrequently, and no longer occurs. A common way to translate this is to say that one “used to” do something.
