Well, I give in… After years of watching my elementary-aged school kids drown my beloved soap bars in water and mush them up into sad messy little mounds, I’m introducing something new: natural liquid foaming soap! Enjoy every wash with effortless rich and foamy lather. This month marks the 2nd anniversary since I started partnering with @anacaona.community. Through the power of social media, soapmakers around the world have united to help women & children in Haiti. Together, we have surpassed 1 ton in soap scrap donations & that number is still growing! For those new to my feed, ANACAONA Community is a small but mighty team of mostly Haitian single mothers who are the sole providers of their families. The soap that we collect enables these women to have jobs that provide for an average of 10 family dependents. These amazing women upcycle our soap scrap donations into new bars that are then distributed to 19 primary schools around the region. 3,674 students will receive free soap bars to combat cholera & life-threatening diseases. The ultimate goal is to help children focus on becoming educated so that they can rise out of poverty. For the past couple of years, our soap scrap donations have traveled by container ship from Georgia (U.S.) to Haiti. This past year, our friends in Haiti were devastated by political turmoil. The assassination of their President & subsequent gang violence made shipping ports inaccessible for months. But we are very happy to report that our soap donations arrived safely! The team will now be to make 4,500 bars with our soap scraps. Many thanks to my wonderful soapmaking community for supporting this organization. And to my dear friend & founder of ANACAONA Community, Laure Bottinelli, for her tireless fight for humanity. What I especially love about her organization is that she takes care of her workers with health benefits & safe working conditions. Even when the country was in lockdown & workers were unable to get to the soapmaking workshop, they were still paid & supported like family. These are my soapmaker friends at @anacaona.community in Haiti. It's been such an honor to work with them. They are making a huge impact in their community with soap upcycling and hygiene education work. Each of Anacaona's workers is the sole financial supporter for his/her/their families, which consist of about 10 dependents per team member. So this small, but mighty group is collectively taking care of at least 100 loved ones, in addition to the thousands of school children across Haiti who receive their free soap bars. This team is #heroic. And so, too, are the soapmakers around the world who are donating their extra bars and soap scraps to Anacaona's cause. Since the beginning of 2021, soapmakers have raised over 1 ton of soap!!! THANK YOU to all who have contributed to @anacaona.community! We're truly making a difference. We are in Round 3 of our soap donation drive. The next boat is scheduled to go out in August. For this round, we have raised more soap than ever before with 3 300-pound barrels. Every natural soapmaker likely has a bin filled with colorful soap scraps and shavings like the ones pictured above. Since 2021, soapmakers around the globe have heard my call to donate scraps, test batches, bloopers & unsold extra bars to @anacaona.community. This amazing organization in Haiti employs single mothers to upcycle this soap into new bars. The bars are then distributed to school children for free to reduce the risk of death from disease. With the help of organizations like @unicef and @surgeforwater, Anacaona's team also sets up clean water stations and provides hygiene instructions for school teachers to reinforce in classrooms. As an operational partner to this cause, I am SO PROUD of my soapmaking community's generosity.
