did you like the last season?

i feel as if i am a bit too biased to provide actual commentary on the season. i obviously watch the show for the kids, and this season was not about them. however, i will attempt to break down some of my thoughts about it.

serialized storytelling does not work on a television show that relies heavily on current events and pop culture.

i have not read a single article about this season (due to how busy i’ve been), but i know that they were counting on hillary winning the election. without even looking into it, i can easily assume that trump’s win completely fucked all of their plans for the season. i don’t think they fully recovered from that in the last few episodes.

they completely dropped the member berries storyline. it didn’t even come up again until that shot in the finale. what happened to vomiting caitlyn jenner? or randy? sharon? shelley? they didn’t have time to put together a coherent season. they had to drop that entire storyline just to get the show made, and the unexpected election results were probably the reason for that.

obviously, they understand the issues with their storytelling. but i know that the shot of the member berries at the end was not something that they originally planned. they were just acknowledging the gigantic plot holes. this brings me to another issue….

the entire season was mostly just matt and trey using characters to speak on behalf of themselves.

breaking the fourth wall? funny. is it funny when it’s all you’re doing? um. debatable.

this is the part i’m super iffy about.

on one hand, they’ve matured a lot, and i’m proud of how self-aware they are. i’m glad they’re distancing themselves from the, uh, unsavory groups that many people associate with them.

on the other hand, it’s a television show. i kind of just want to watch a bunch of kids do ridiculous shit.

where the fuck was stan? or kenny? or basically anyone else besides cartman and kyle and butters?

ok, oops. i’m biased. i love the kids. i can’t help it.

matt and trey are older now. they used to speak through stan and kyle. now, they clearly speak through randy and gerald. i understand that!

but this election was such a perfect opportunity for kids vs. adults. gerald still could have been the troll, but he didn’t have to be the focus.

i don’t know, man. all of the kids working together in the finale…. i feel like that’s what we should have gotten all season, you know?

no tie-in for fractured but whole???!?!?!?!

good things about episode:

the girls

craig and tweek sitting together

mr. broflovski being the troll (b/c most trolls like that ARE grown men)

bad things about episode:

i honestly feel like trump jokes are always Eh because he is such a fucking mess that it’s hard to satirize him. he’s already the Worst and there’s nothing really left to say. 

should be focusing on the kids. let’s throw it back to when the show was mostly the kids reacting to the dumb shit that adults do..... because that’s what this election is, anyway.
