it's been what...2 weeks? since I watched dbd and I'm still reeling from edwin saying you have to experience hell to see the rest of it and we have charles who couldn't see hell until he saw edwin suffering and broken.

I've been pondering this for a second, but I have this theory that ghosts can feel other ghosts, and the show kind of has this emphasis on kissing. Such as Charles misses kissing, and Edwin never got to experience his first kiss before he died. Now, technically, Edwin had his first kiss with Monty and Charles kisses Crystal, but they can't feel it physically. I don't know. I just feel like it's set up to be really beautiful if Edwin and Charles ever do kiss.

im trying to have in depth, intellectual thoughts about dead boy detectives bc its such an interesting and complex show with complex characters but instead im just spinning the characters around in my head going "i love them"

sorry but I just keep getting stuck on the way Charles sees himself and the skills that he's cultivated and values in himself, and the fact that at no point does he ever seem to consider himself smart or capable in any way that isn't physical?

Like his backpack, that Edwin fully admits to being unable to use and took Charles years of practice, but Charles just shrugs off? It's a pocket universe that he navigates with no problem, how did he learn to do that, did he have to teach himself? He seems to have a fantastic memory for their past cases, and he so easily keeps up with Edwins technical talk on multiple occasions. He went to a fancy boarding school, and I know we aren't really given any information on how he did there academically but i can't help but think that if he was struggling then he would have brought it up as another thing he couldn't do right in his dad's eyes.

This boy traversed hell with nothing but a journal a lantern and the stories he remembered from his best friend offered over 30 years, and you want me to believe he's stupid

I dunno, every time he writes himself off as just the brawn of the duo who doesn't offer anything more to the agency, I want to shake his sweet self-deprecating face

I'm actually so emotional about what a great character Charles is like-

He was bullied his entire life either by his father or his classmates but he's so kind and forgiving and chooses to be the nicest and most selfless person at all times.

Like- Even though his father beat him up all the time he didn't join in on the bullying and even when he dies, instead of becoming a bitter ghost or simply moving on he decides to help other ghosts move on and find peace.

And he would give literally EVERYTHING to protect his best friend. It seems like "oh yea he's just a selfless person" but when you think about it he does the most batshit insane stuff only to protect his friends. He kicks a random afterlife lady off a cliff, feeding her to a giant fish so Edwyn won't have to go to hell even though he's afraid of his own anger and doesn't want to act on it, he is 100% ready to throw hands with the cat king (a way older magical being with literal nine lives) at the slightest suspicion he might be harassing his friend, he goes to literal hell at risk of never getting out or getting sent to the afterlife afterwards, like- when it comes to protecting his friend(s) he knows absolutely no limits.

And he's also incredibly forgiving. In the kitchen at Esthers house in the last episode, I would've simply roundhousekicked Monty out the window at the first chance, redemption arc my ass. But he doesn't he simply smiles, forgives (to an extent) and then goes about his task. He's just such an incredibly sweet person.

And it's really just because he just wants to be loved. He just hangs on to that really friendly ghost who showed him kindness as he was dying and decides "yep I really want to stay with that person". This was probably the most love somebody showed him in a really long time. And then later he tries really hard to get everyone to like him (that smile on his face when Monty says he's a good friend).

I'm just sooooo emotional about that 80s ghost

Do you ever think about how after Edwin and Charles realized they could stay on earth and keep solving cases they just held onto each other for dear life? They reached out to each other at the same time, as if they were making sure Edwin's really not going to hell, and now they have eternity to be together and work through everything.

Because I think about it, like, a LOT.
