History of YOI fandom

As a YOI fandom grandparent, I felt it was my duty to write out all the fandom explosions for the newer fans who weren’t there to witness the big bang and gradual week-by-week creation of this universe. All the arguments, people blowing things out of proportion, blaming characters, death theories, awesome fans clearing up miscommunications, YOI breaking the internet… 

This isn’t a post to call out specific people on their arguments and theories - I’ll stay respectfully away from restarting flames and picking fights, thankyouverymuch. Rather, this is an overview of the topics and conflicting views that swept across hundreds and thousands of people and prompted strong reactions. I’m doing this now, because I know that 6 months later, 1 year later, 3 years later, etc. there will be new fans who will have many of the same exact arguments. We’ve been there and done that. I see fans now who say things without knowing where the spelling/quote comes from, or who don’t realize how much has changed, or don’t know why there are certain perceptions of characters. So here’s a little bit of passing down history.

I also don’t want to forget the crazy ride this was. Laugh with me at the silly theories; smile with me at how deeply YOI has impacted our lives. For those of us old-timers, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when…

Pre-series

Idea that there would be a love triangle (Yuri P.–Yuri K.–Victor)

Some fans started spelling Yuri Katsuki with two “u” in order to tell them apart.

Victuri ship name created for Victor x Yuri K. (in a comment to the PV)

The title

“lol ‘Yuri’ on Ice? Where are all the lesbians?”

“When it said Yuri on Ice, I thought we would get girls. Y’know what I mean?”

“Yuri on Ice? More like Yaoi on Ice! amiright?”

etc.

J.J. misspelling (English spelling “Jean Jack” instead of French Canadian “Jean-Jacques”)

you can see the remnants of this in the audience banners during the episodes, but it was corrected to “Jean-Jacques” on the official website and the in-show text

Phichit x Seung-gil ship created (there was more art for this than for Victor x Yuuri)

Episode 1

Victor vs. Viktor spelling arguments 

Although “Victor” is the official spelling and seen in-show, people argued that the creators are wrong and that we fans know better than them about Russian culture - thus the “Viktor” spelling was born.

People argued back that spelling is subjective and you can spell a name multiple ways and still be correct - thus transliterating his Russian name into English as “Victor” would be just as acceptable.

The YOI wiki held fast for a time on using official spellings and information from the official website, but the transition of power led to a new team that started using agreed-upon info rather than solely using official info. “Viktor” replaced “Victor” on the website.

this change from “Victor” to “Viktor” on the wiki happened around episode 2~3, but the arguments were in the page comments since episode 1 – with moderators explaining their reasoning with sticking to official sources.

Victor is a flirtatious over-the-top character who will seduce Yuuri

Victor is the overwhelming seme and Yuuri is the shy whimpering uke.

Reblogging again because I'm mildly obsessed with this diptych. The artistry is obviously fantastic, but the symbolism is killing me.

Beginning: First we have Yuuri looking upwards but with his arms closed in upon himself, showing his yearning to shine but also the barriers he's creating for himself. Victor visibly depressed. Both of them isolated. And their respective spotlights and crossed shadows creating a large ❌ and indicating that this is not the way forward.

Ending: Yuuri and Victor respectively help each other find happiness. Yuuri shows himself fully to the world, and Victor finds more fulfillment in a supportive role than he ever did when he was alone under the spotlights. Both their spotlights on the ice form a heart 💜💙

This is truly a spectacular artwork! 🥹

(For those of my followers who don't know what this is about: Yuri!!! on Ice is an anime that was released in 2016 about (fictional) Japanese figure skater Yuuri Katsuki and Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov. A heartwarming story tackling subjects such as battling through social anxiety and depression to achieve success and happiness. Season 1 ended at 12 episodes with a possible hope for a second season, and confirmed news about a movie being in the works. Titled Ice Adolescence, it was probably going to be a prequel to the series. An animated teaser was released, but due to Covid and other studio issues, the production had been postponed until further notice. Just a couple of days ago, there was an official announcement that the movie was definitely cancelled. Under the circumstances, this was not exactly unexpected news but disappointing nonetheless. 😔)

Introduction to ‘Les Cinq’

Part 1

Les Cinq vendent la peau de l’ours – The Famous Five and the Blue Bear Mystery

Plot summary:

On December 24th, the Five take a walk around Kirrin village. At the toy store, the shopkeeper has just received three dozen teddy bears all in different colours. Anne really loves a blue one, and Julian buys it as a gift for her.

(Julian offers a teddy bear to his adorable sister – so cute! (Come on, George, stop smirking!))

That afternoon, the children are invited to a friend’s house for a Christmas party. Their host has bought a set of 12 teddy bears from the store and used them to decorate the Christmas tree. In the middle of the party, the lights suddenly go out, and someone steals the Christmas tree! Everyone is stunned by this most peculiar theft.

The next day, the Five learn that the two boxes containing the remaining teddy bears have been stolen from the toy store on Christmas Eve. The children go to the toy store to find out more. They meet a strange journalist who’s intent on interrogating the shopkeeper about the theft and all but ignores the children until Anne announces that she has a teddy bear in her possession, the only one that hasn't been stolen. The journalist then takes an interest in her and asks her a few questions, including when she bought it and where she lives.

On the next day at the market, a strange woman asks Anne to sell her the plushie, pleading that she wants to offer it as a gift to her son, who is very sick. Anne’s heartstrings are suitably shaken at this plea, but the others find this request suspicious. They realise that there is a link between the theft of the Christmas tree and the break-in at the toy store, namely in both cases the thieves were after the teddy bears delivered to the toy store on Christmas Eve.

At first glance, Anne's plushie seems to be nothing special. But when the children open it, they discover a piece of paper on which a rough map is drawn. It's all very mysterious, but one thing's for sure: the thieves have been looking for this map all along.

Anne's plushie is subsequently stolen while the Five are out cycling (the plushie no longer containing the map). Later, while playing on the beach, the Five are ordered by a stranger to either hand over the paper by midday the next day and place it under a certain rock he points out, or he will come after them.

The Five decide to create a false map, then deliver it to the designated spot. They keep watch and see a biker coming to retrieve the map. While the man is busy retrieving the map, they search the motorbike and find an envelope with the name "Siméon Rebouc", who lives in a nearby town called Pléjar.

They go there and look for the home of said Siméon Rebouc, who has a bad reputation. The Five see the biker talking to the fake journalist from earlier. They overhear them talking to each other about the “purple house”, and about one of their accomplices, called Garbin, who’s currently in prison. Further discussion leads the Five to conclude that said Garbin stole some unknown valuables, was subsequently arrested and sent to prison, and used the teddy bears, made by convicts in the course of prison work, to pass on the map to his accomplices.

On December 31st, the Five discover the location of the “purple house”, thus named for the unusual colour of its walls. They also learn that the house belongs to Garbin, and that the latter was arrested after stealing master paintings from an art gallery in Paris.

The children go back to the house in the evening, and see the thieves digging a hole in the basement. Guided by the false map, they obviously discover nothing.

After the bandits leave the house, the Five enter and, guided by the real map, uncover the buried treasure. Unfortunately, the thieves return to the house and surprise the children. They tie them up in the basement, take hold of the paintings and flee.

Thanks to Timmy, who tears George's bonds, the Five manage to escape. Following an encounter with the local police, who believe them to be up to no good, Mr Kirrin is called to the station and convinces the policemen to investigate.

Siméon's brother is questioned and the policeman’s investigations leads them to Kirrin harbour where the three bandits (Léon – the fake journalist; Siméon – the biker; and Irène – Léon’s wife who tried to get Anne’s plushie at the market) were about to embark to go abroad.

(Siméon is caught first while bringing fuel to the boat…)

(…Léon and Irène try to escape but will not go far due to said lack of fuel)

The police initially fails to find the paintings after searching the boat, but the Five quickly discover them, hidden under a bench seat. The bandits are immediately taken into custody. After this long and turbulent night, the Five spend a peaceful and cosy New Year's Day at Kirrin Cottage.
