As you edge closer, you catch a glimpse of what Klaus can’t escape seeing all the sunny day long. Death, you look her square in the face, on the precipice. And it’s not the instant death part that scares you and makes you recoil, it’s that it’s already here. The absolute certainty of your death, which will happen 100%, so what are you so scared about? Relaaax. And how little equipment / language / real ritual we have to really deal with it. We have no negotiation tactics in this match. Except, maybe Klaus?
“You Look Like Death” / Tales from the Umbrella Academy
— Foreword, by Robert Sheehan
Okay, so I think I've figured out why I love the pilot so much.
Their dynamics and personalities are captured so well in just the first episode. You get a pretty good understanding of who they are, what they're like, and why they're like that, just in the first episode. And they don't tell you any of that. They show it to you through their dynamics with the other characters.
Luther was obviously favoured by Reginald, and is still under his hand, even after death.
Diego is jaded by his father, and because of this, does not get along with Luther. But we see he has a softer side in the way he treats Grace.
Allison has a pretty good relationship with most of her siblings, sans Diego. We also see that she's a little lost, she’s going through divorce and lost custody of her kid.
Klaus also has a pretty good relationship with his siblings, including Diego. But we also see that he isn't really taken seriously by any of them, but he also doesn't really take anything seriously.
Five doesn't trust easily, and prefers to work alone. But there's also more to him that we know of.
We don't really see any of Ben, but he's introduced pretty early on in episode 2, so it's fine.
And Viktor. We get a good sense of how isolated he is. He's very quiet and doesn't really speak up unless he feels he has to.
I think a very important part in showcasing all of this was jumping back and forth between the present and moments from their past. Their first mission, them wanting to say good night to their father and being ignored, their training, getting their brand tattoos, and Reginald monitoring them in their sleep. You get a good sense of what their childhood was probably like, and how their father probably was. And that helps in understanding why they are the way that they are, especially Viktor.
I don't know, I just love their dynamics (I think that's pretty evidenced by what my favourite episodes are, which are s1ep1, s2ep5, and s3ep8). I love how they just jump right into the story and don't bother explaining anything (sans the intro). I love how you understand that so much has happened before the actual story even began, but you are probably never gonna find out what happened. I just love it, okay.
