I'm super excited about this boatload of Nantucketers!
Mutinies back in the maritime era were a lot like today's worker strikes - take autoworkers as we speak - but much, much more violent and dangerous. Captains were often tyrants and insubordination - or #misbehavior - was punishable by violence.
So... crews got fed up and protested with violence.
This mutiny is exceptional not just because of the number of casualties and how they died, but because of the one particularly dark mind that led it and the ulterior motives he'd been festering in for years that gave it the wild outcome you have GOT to hear about.

Amazing insight into the last known voyage of enslaved people captured in Africa and brought to the US. It was 52 years after this was made illegal - an act of piracy by law - and executed by a few Alabama transplants from Maine and Nova Scotia. As the result of a bet. They were never convicted, but the victims started a community outside of Mobile that exists to this day.

There is an old proverb that speaks to maritime reality well “Those who would go to sea for pleasure would go to hell for a pastime.” As revolutionary and liberated as the life of a pirate was, enlisting on a ship came with only one guarantee - things could go wrong.
