March 2023 Kristoffer Ørum's exhibition poses a paradox and asks how we can get used to living in a world that is constantly changing with technological trends that constantly supplement, expand and reinforce the same reality with extra layers of information. Our everyday life is increasingly a mediated dimension that is permeated by the virtual and by digital systems; what yesterday was a disturbing future is what we fool around with today and voluntarily throw ourselves into. Three of Ørum's speculative monstrous beings from his performances, exhibitions and interventions are brought together to simultaneously popularize and problematize the relationship between nature, culture and technology. They are called forth from the cracks between the familiar and an imaginary world, the techno-scientific authoritative and a bizarre future fantasy. The title's English "mundane" contains an ambiguity, as the word means the everyday, while the Danish mondæn, which is also derived from mundus 'world', means something that rather belongs in the fine world. Rather than the unpredictable or yet imaginable future existing as a dark cage full of scary tomorrows piled together in a formless heap, the exhibition suggests new ways to consider familiar issues in the world we must constantly learn to live with . In an imagined future, humans have returned to their roots as hunter-gatherers, migrating from one giant oyster to the next as the seasons change. The world has undergone a significant transformation, with the once dominant cities and dry land now a distant memory. The giant oysters, once seen as powerful and in control, have become sources of sustenance for the humans, providing food, shelter, and a place to call home. As the humans migrate from one oyster to the next, they live off what nature and the seasons provide, relying on their skills and knowledge to survive. Tre af Ørums spekulative monstrøse væsener fra hans performances, udstillinger og interventioner bringes sammen, for på en gang at popularisere og problematisere forholdet mellem natur, kultur og teknologi. De kaldes frem fra sprækkerne mellem det velkendte og en forestillingsverden, det tekno-videnskabeligt autoritative og en bizar fremtidsfantasi. Titlens engelske ”mundane” rummer tilsvarende en tvetydighed idet ordet betyder det hverdagsagtige, medens det danske mondæn, der ligeledes er afledt af mundus ’verden’, betyder noget som snarere hører til i den fine verden. Frem for, at den uforudsigelige eller dog tænkelige fremtid eksisterer som et mørkt bur fuldt af uhyggelige morgendage, der er bunket sammen i en uformelig dynge, foreslår udstillingen nye måder at overveje velkendte problemstillinger på, i den verden vi hele tiden skal lære at leve med. In the future, humanity had to abandon the land and retreat to the oceans due to rising sea levels caused by climate change. Life under the sea was not easy, but the people adapted, building underwater cities and finding new sources of food and energy. In this new society, the concept of wealth and money as it was once known became obsolete. Instead, giant pearls were used as a form of currency and a means of exchanging goods and services. However, unlike the old world where giant pearls were a symbol of wealth and status, in this society, every individual was entitled to an equal share of the giant pearls. The pearls were used as a means of exchange for necessary resources, such as food and medical supplies, without the hoarding of wealth by any one person or group. The equitable distribution of giant pearls ensured that everyone had access to the resources they needed to survive and thrive. Building small stands out of plywood with self designed 3D printed connectors for Mundane Monsters. Sometimes in wonder if I might have been happier as an engineer solving practical hands on problems with instead of the fragmented and propositional art projects i spend my time on. Probably i would find still myself in much the same situation, looking over the "fence" to other traditions and instutions, wondering if they might somehow provide the means of pursuing my interest. Wondering what is to be learned from other disciplines about the world and how to live in it. In this way it is difficult not to sometimes dream that there might be a discipline or context where all of my interests and all of what in want to do might fit. But in truth i don't think that such an ideal profession, context or tradition exists, but that its something that every one has fashion for oneself. Carving out a space where what "needs to be done" can be, by not caring too much about disciplines or tradion. Obtaining a bit of freedom to act on what is apparent to ones self, by not adhering to the norms of one field, but instead choosing to maintain a polygamous relationship to many fields and ways of thinking. There is so much joy to be found in choosing no field and so much adventure to be had by having a utilitarian approach to disciplines, as useful fictitious rather than guiding principles. Even if that might never lead to a sensible/coherent narrative of the slef or a sense of belonging to anywhere for very long.
