The Ahuitzotl Box. This is a detail of a stone box made in 1499 to hold the ashes of Ahuitzotl, the Eighth emperor of Tenochtitlan. On the inside is carved the Mexica date; Seven Reed. Here, Tlaloc, the Teótl of Rain, pours water and maize ears from a vessel which bears on its side the round glyph of “jade”. A pectoral with a symbol for “gold” hangs from Tlaloc’s necklace. From the water and around his body emerges a glyph which symbolizes “steam.” It is thought that this box might have contained sacrificial implements, such as bone daggers and maguey spines for use in rituals of auto-sacrifice. The ritual of the emperor’s drawing of blood was considered necessary to the falling of the rain and the health of the community, hence the image of Tlaloc pouring water (rain) upon the world below.
La Caja de Ahuitzotl. Este es un detalle de una caja de piedra hecha en 1499 para Ahuizotl, el octavo emperador de Tenochtitlan. En el interior está tallada la fecha Mexica; Siete Caña, y tambien el glyfo del nombre del emperador. Aquí, Tlaloc, el Téotl de Lluvia, tire agua y maíz de un vaso que lleva en su lado el glyfo ronda de “jade” . Un pectoral con un símbolo de “oro ” cuelga del collar de Tláloc. Desde el agua y alrededor de su cuerpo emerge un glifo que simboliza “ vapor ”. Se cree que esta caja podría haber contenido implementos de sacrificio, como dagas de hueso y espinas de maguey para su uso en rituales de auto-sacrificio. Se consideraba necesario el ritual de auto sacrificio del emperador para la caída de la lluvia y la salud de la comunidad, por lo tanto, la imagen de Tláloc vertando agua (lluvia) sobre el mundo de abajo .
