It is funny to me how Harry Potter is literally the main character, yet people tend to go like he didn't suffer that much or he wasn't "abused"; Like, how can one misunderstand the literal main character of the damn franchise?

He wasn't abused; yes okay. He absolutely did not grow up inside a cupboard; the tiny place that is mostly reserved for brooms or cleaning supply. He absolutely was not treated inferior to the other child who lived in the same house. He was totally was not treated like a "freak" or a "stain" that his family was ashamed off. He grew up inside a cupboard while there was a literal unused bed in the same house. And you want to know what that screamed to a child, a baby — who slept inside a cupboard while there being a perfectly usable room right there? You are worth nothing and we don't love you and we are ashamed of what you are.

He wasn't starved, or at least he was fed; Yeah, no. We see it from the first book. How Vernon was no food for you and in the cupboard you go — and by the looks of it, that was like his most common punishment. And then, in the second book — you practically see it happen. He was locked, inside a room with only a can of soup that he shared with Hedwig. Now, tell me what it would do to a child — to be given food through a cat flap, and fun fact? Harry got to eat less than people on war rations; in short? He was starved, yes.

He wasn't abused physically so it's not abuse; As for people's thinks abuse isn't abuse until it's physical (which is inherently wrong because abuse isn't only physically, fyi); Harry has learned to dodge Vernon and he states that, very proudly when his uncle tries to grab him. He dodges a flying pan and states that fact, again very proudly as if it is the norm; do you know how heavy pans are? And do you know what would happen when one hits you? If you want an even clearer proof; Vernon Dursley strangles Harry in Ootp. There you go. Also, in the first book, we clearly see Vernon encouraging Dudley to hit Harry. Read between the lines and actually try to understand what that signifies.

And favourite part; When he wasn't treated like a prisoner, or a freak— he was their servant. And that is very much canonical. Tending Petunia's garden during summers and drinking from the water hose in the garden because of how hot it was? Having to wake up early so he can tend the kitchen and when he wasn't doing all that he is locked away. And it is all canon.

In conclusion, Harry— not only grew up to think that he was inhumane, undeserving of love, a freak that didn't even get to have his own bed because someone like him didn't deserve it, physically harmed enough times that he dodges them out of reflex and also the Dursleys' glorified servant; that is not even taking into account what Harry went through in Hogwarts. And after all that if someone tells me; this child, right here — didn't go through much then well, maybe read the books again?

listen i have no idea where this idea that harry james potter is unobservant comes from? like are we talking about the same kid who spent six years solving mysteries that had all the teachers baffled, who located 3 horcruxes with almost no clues to speak of, who was literally the only other person besides snape & dumbledore who picked up on draco being a death eater for the entirety of sixth year, who became an auror straight out of hogwarts because he was that good at solving mysteries. like harry is an incredibly observant person, he has a way of finding details & connections that other people miss, he has an intuitive understanding of ancient magic and how it works, and he’s adept at reading people & wheedling information from them (think: slughorn’s memory, the grey lady, even negotiating w/ vernon about his hogsmeade form). this boy is literally so observant and clever and cunning and it kind of amazes me how anyone can read all 7 books and think he’s just reckless and oblivious

He did not answer; he did not know what to do. Ron seemed determined to give neither his opinion nor his advice. He would not look at Harry, though when Hermione opened her mouth to try dissuading Harry some more, he said in a low voice, “Give it a rest, okay? He can make up his own mind.”

I'm so glad I found a person who has Harry James Potter as a favourite character, he's my favourite character too and inspiration

Harry has always been my favorite character in the books he's so special to me, and I hate the movies for doing him dirty.

He's sarcastic, clever, stubborn, resilient and an actually amazing wizard. He's a better strategist than Hermione but no one talks about it (I love Hermione, but she's good at memorizing books and solving riddles, not making battle plans). And he is so funny, in a more sassy way than Ron but their sense of humor really matches in the books and you see why they are such great friends (and I love their friendship).

Harry isn't some sweet hero or a paragon of any kind, he's angry, like, really angry, and I love that about him. He has every right to have a bad temper because his life sucks. By the final books he casts Unforgivables out easily, Snape is surprised he managed to cast Sectumsempra, but it really isn't surprising when it comes to Harry "hatred such as he had never known before was coursing through him like poison" Potter (a paraphrased quote from POA!)

But with how truly awful his life is he pushes forward with way less angsting than he could have pulled (like he has his angsty moments, and I love them too! I wouldn't have loved him as much without his angst, yes, even in OOTP). I find his mind so fun to be in and love the fact he is the narrator for the majority of the books. He's the kind of brave where he's scared but fear never stops him because whatever you threaten him with, he's had worse. I just really love Harry and whenever I try to read fics it's just not his character there...

One time, an irl colleague told me that out of the Golden Trio my personality reminded them most of Harry, and it made my week.

My love for Harry James Potter's character is a foaming-at-the-mouth sort of love where I want to dissect his brain but also cover him in a blanket and give him hot chocolate milk while whisking him away from all the adults who failed him.

I'm so glad to find more people who love him too.
