6 International Mystery/Thriller Films to Watch on Netflix
Recently I've been trying to get more into the international side of Netflix to see what hidden gems exist in the other countries and they've got quite a bit! I decided to watch 10 films that grabbed my interest and made a list of recommendations. That being said, here's my list of 10 mystery films to check out on Netflix.
1. Murder Mubarak
Country: India
Language: Hindi
Director: Homi Adajania
When a murder occurs at a high end establishment called The Royal Delhi Club, ACP Bavani Singh and his sidekick officer Padam are on the case. To me this movie was a pretty solid whodunnit. ACP Singh and Padam gave me big Poirot & Chief Inspector Japp vibes and the club setting and its employees and wealthy guests gave me Knives Out vibes. It was kind of predictable but even then I found myself unsure who the murderer was. There was a brief graphic scene showing a dead cat as well as some shots of the same cat unconscious so just a heads up if you decide to watch it.
2. In Love and Deep Water
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese
Director: Yusuke Taki
Suguru Ubukata is a butler on a cruise ship that takes his job very seriously. A 42 day voyage that should go smoothly gets messy when not only does he discover his girlfriend is having an affair, there’s a murder that takes place on the night that the ship sets sail. It’s more romance than mystery in my opinion because a lot of focus is on the budding romance between Suguru and Chizuru Banjaku, the girlfriend of Suguru’s girlfriend’s lover.
3. A Deadly Invitation
Country: Mexico
Language: Spanish
Director: José Manuel Cravioto
Agatha Hernandez, a true crime fan and co-host of a podcast called Unsolved Crimes, unexpectedly gets an invitation to visit her estranged sister Olivia at her mansion. The reason for the invite? Olivia wants to play a deadly game. She lays everyone’s dirty secrets out on the table and the reasons they would have to kill each other. To no one’s surprise Olivia is dead before morning and it’s up to Agatha to solve the murder. It gives me The Last of Sheila (1973) vibes because of the similarities such as the secrets being revealed by the host on a yacht, but I think overall it does end up being it's own film. It's a straightforward mystery with minimal violence and gore and in my opinion has a satisfiable ending.
4. The Lost Patient
Country: France
Language: French
Director: Christophe Charrier
Thomas Grimaud, a 19 year old, falls into a coma for 3 years after his entire family is murdered except for his sister who disappeared without a trace. When he awakens he has no memory of what happened or where his sister is. With the help of a psychologist, Thomas tries to piece together what happened to his family. To be honest the film is a bit predictable but even then I found the ending to be a little bit confusing. It resembles the plot of a film that came out a couple of years before and I don’t want to spoil it so if you’re interested it’s listed at the end of this post.
5. The Postcard Killings
Country: England
Language: English
Director: Danis Tanović
Jacob Kanon, a detective with the NYPD, travels to London to find answers after his daughter and her husband are killed there while on their honeymoon. The police refuse to give out answers and when discovering that their deaths were committed by a serial killer who targets other newlyweds and leaves a signature post card, Jacob decides to investigate on his own. When an American journalist Désirée Lombard receives a postcard in Sweden, Jacob seeks her help to track down the killer and get justice for his daughter and all of the other victims. As Jacob closes in on the killer’s identity it becomes a game of cat and mouse and a race to prevent another couple’s death.
TW: Body Horror
6. Killer Book Club
Country: Spain
Language: Spanish
Director: Carlos Alonso-Ojea
A group of college students with a book club for horror novels are stalked by a killer in a clown suit after a revenge prank leads to a death. The killer clown is writing a story about the murder and devotes each chapter to one of the club members being punished killed. The concept of a horror book club being the target of a killer is an interesting new take on the slasher film genre. Since it’s a slasher film you can expect a lot of gory scenes. Some parts of the movie were predictable but I don’t think it took away from what was a simple slasher film.
TW: Sexual Assault
SPOILERS FOR THE LOST PATIENT
The movie that the Lost Patient resembles and imo executes the amnesia aspect and plot twist way better is Forgotten (2017) also on Netflix and starring Kang Ha-Neul.

Have you ever been browsing on goodreads or thestorygraph and been frustrated having to go to several online library sources to see where the book is available? If so I strongly recommend that you add the library extension to your browser. Not only does it tell you which app/website has the book in question, it also tells you how many copies are available. I find it extremely helpful because it lets me know if I'd be better off physically going to the library for a book or if I can save myself a trip and check out the ebook instead. There is the occasional error where a book with a name that is too common will be mistaken for either another book or a dvd with the same name but for the most part it's highly accurate. I hope that this post is helpful and saves you time as well as money! If you're just getting started with exploring digital libraries and looking for apps/websites that allow you to access audiobooks and ebooks with your library card for free you can find some popular ones on my list here.

End of Story by A.J. Finn
A.J. Finn has done it again and delivered another jaw dropping thriller. End of Story is about a woman named Nicky Hunter who is invited to visit the home of her favorite mystery author Sebastian Trapp. The two have been corresponding back and forth for five years and after recently discovering that he has only three months to live, Sebastian decides he wants Nicky to write his story. On New Year's Eve in 1999, Sebastian's son Cole and his wife Hope disappeared without a trace and this disappearance has haunted both him and his daughter Madeleine. Rather than tell us the mystery of what happened in two alternating storylines, we learn about Cole and Hope through video tapes, hearsay, and Cole's diary. I thought I had this book figured out but was still completely blindsided by the reveal of what happened. It's a slow burn so expect maybe a handful of chapters that actually have a lot of action. I give it 5 stars.
Trigger Warnings: child abuse, emotional abuse, homophobia, references to physical abuse, depression, and a suicide attempt

I haven’t seen any ads for any new whodunnit series or movies so I think I’ll tackle the Harlan Coben collection on Netflix until something else comes along. If any of you have any recs feel free to send them my way!

Death and Other Details Season 2
Spoilers ahead for the season finale!
It seems very likely that the show will be renewed for a second season but my question is: Is there enough material? We now know the identity of Viktor Sams even if their ending is up in the air but will we care enough to see that storyline continue? I personally do not want to see Viktor Sams as a big bad in season two or any other seasons this show may have. What I do like is the newfound Scooby Doo type clique with Imogene, Leila, Teddy and Jules and I would love to see Sunil helping on the sidelines while he's on house arrest. Since it's a mystery show they could really do without the love triangle so if it's Imogene/Jules it needs to stay that way or pair her back with Sunil and call it a day. Does anyone else ship Jules and Teddy though? 👀

Death and Other Details Episode 8: Vanishing
We’ve got two more episodes to go after this and tbh, I’m ready for the finale. I think the show took too long establishing characters and etc when they could have been exposing more clues and generating interest in the murder(s) and Viktor Sams. Here is my takeaway from this episode and what I think may happen in the finale. Spoilers ahead so read at your own risk.
The Blackout
I don’t care how cliche it is, I love a good blackout in a whodunnit. The stakes are high bc the killer can slip in and out of places unseen, everyone has to stay together to avoid being picked off, and the fear of death makes secrets come to life. At one point Tripp asks, “Am I going to die?”. and yeah probably 😬 It would be kind of sad though if he did since he wasn’t even involved in the mess and tbh not smart enough to be committing crimes on that level.
That Derek and his Followers
When he said “If you are seeing this that means I’m dead” I got really worried for a second. Whodunnits spare children but he is a teenager so still very much a target since he’s been broadcasting and could be suspected of recording something that he shouldn’t have.
Jules’s Escape
Winnie has some nerve asking Jules to let her out after Imogen slips him the key. Girl you’re a whole murderer, no way are you going to be let out to roam freely especially in a BLACKOUT. Girl bye. He hasn’t done much yet and is still scheming to get off the boat but I hope he survives until the end:
Lawrence’s Apathy at Llewellyn’s Death
That man is an emotionless monster who valued money over the lives of the people that worked for him and if it does turn out he’s been poisoned via his blue drinks, no one will mourn him. And on top of that he killed Kira so she’d stop asking questions. Also how wild is it that Llewellyn is Anna’s biological father?! The theories were that Tripp was the affair baby but Anna?! This is wild. Maybe that’s why Lawrence was so reluctant to hand over the company to her. Katherine killing Llewellyn does not mean that she is Viktor Sams. It just means she doesn’t want her secrets getting out. But it was all for nothing bc everyone is finding out the family secrets anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️
Winnie Distraught Over Llewellyn’s Death
I’m really confused as to why Winnie was so upset over his death since they only interacted briefly, but I’m glad that her grief led to confirming the suspicion that he was poisoned. The way he sadly spoke of the wine when she went to his room earlier that night immediately made me wonder if that were the case.
Who is Viktor Sams?
I still think there are two different Viktor Sams: VS1 who everyone feared when Imogene’s mother was killed and VS2 who is getting revenge on everyone involved with captionem blue. Celia and Eleanor seem too obvious but if it is one por both of them it’s clear why after Celia’s backstory. What I can say is who I do not think is Viktor Sams and that is:
Teddy
Jules
Imagen
Rufus
Tripp
Anna
Lawrence
Katherine
That Derek
WAIT. What if Father Briggs is Viktor Sams?! We know how self righteous religious people can be, especially those who hold power. Maybe he discovered the captionem blue coverup and also lost someone he loved. Either that or Lawrence confided in him during a day he wasn’t lucid and that set the plan in motion/ Nobody would suspect a priest. Also look at his info page. He takes long showers and expects his robes dry cleaned daily. His robes being dry cleaned around the clock washes away any evidence that may be on them and the showering also washes away evidence.

The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner
I finished the book today and I give it four stars. Lenna’s ongoing struggle with believing in the supernatural but pushing through it to get justice for her sister was an interesting read and as odd as Mr. Morley was, the book wouldn’t be the same without him. I found the book to be predictable in some parts but still found myself shocked at the plot twist at the end when the truth was revealed. I wish there was more Lenna/Vaudeline rather than mutual pining and hesitation because of the mystery they were trying to solve because it would have been nice to get some flashbacks of how things were when they first met.

Death and Other Details E7 Spoilers
I feel like the show is finally picking up and I’m so excited to see how this will end. Just a theory but what if there are two Viktor Sams? As in one was the villain that started it all but the second one is a vigilante? We’ve got three episodes to go so it’s most likely not Celia but what about Eleanor? Celia lost her husband so of course Eleanor would have been grieving as well and she’s around the same age as Imogene and also clever so she must have learned something between then and the present day and could easily have been playing Anna this entire time.
Edit: I’d also like to point out that the people that have died so far were involved in the cover up (Lewellyn and Governor Hochenberg) and Danny may have been killed because they were worried that he would get in the way of the revenge plot
