Kenta Pilot Trailer Meta

Coz I missed doing this!!! Also coz I've seen a not small amount of other Kenta fans express concern about his characterization, and I wanna talk about what we’re seeing with him.

I’m sure people know this, but we have to take pilot trailers with a grain of salt. They're not actual trailers, and they're not necessarily representative of the end product. A pilot is a way to pitch a concept, to gauge audience reaction, and to get sponsors onboard. Pit Babe's original pilot was vastly different than what we ended up with—the aesthetics and cinematography were heavily stylized, the cars and the costumes changed—Garfield was even in a racing outfit for the pilot.

While we may not see the dramatic level of change that the original pilot had, since the characters and tone of the series are already well established—things can and will change, especially with a story on the scale of Pit Babe's. I think it's important to keep your expectations broad when it comes to any pilot.

With that said, I'm just glad to have Kenta on my screen again, so I'm gonna talk about what we do have. The pilot may not be part of canon, but it is food and I will take it.

A question I've seen a lot in posts and tags is "Why is Kenta so angry/mad/mean?" This is an easy question to answer. Kenta has a lot to be angry about. His entire life has been upended, he has to see Winner's face every day, and he's in prison. And while I think it's logical that he would end up in prison for what he did, we know prison is not a place of healing. A lot of Kenta-centric post-canon fic (mine included) is about letting him heal from his trauma and atone for his guilt. And he's not gonna get that while he's in prison. Nothing about incarceration will actually allow him to fix the harm he's caused. I think it's reasonable for him to be angry.

I think people have gotten used to the idea that Kenta would immediately start on a path of growth once the story ends, or that he's already gone through a lot of growth by the time he kills Tony, when really, betraying Tony was the first step in a long and difficult journey. Personally, I'm more than fine with having him stall out in prison between seasons because it means we will get to see his growth on-screen instead of just timeskipping ahead a year. Also frankly, y’all know I love watching him suffer. Put that man in situations. But I’ll be surprised if we don’t get to see him smile by the end of the season—Garfield is certainly gunning for it. (Benz have also been very vocal in complaining about the fact that they hardly had any scenes together last season, so 😏 we’ll see what happens)

Also. The path that Kenta is on is not a straight line. The death of an abuser can be a really difficult thing to process. It can bring past trauma to the surface—and Kenta has a lifetime of past trauma to process. It's not pretty, and you have to deal with the fact that you will never get closure. You'll never get an admission that what that person did to you was wrong. Of course Kenta is going to be angry. In fact, I'm glad that he's angry because he deserves that level of emotional freedom. He's acting out and expressing more in this scene than he did for most of the whole series.

Like, look at this! Dean has something that Kenta wants, and Kenta immediately goes after it. He's not trying to mask the fact that he wants it, which is a massive deal for him. The Kenta at the beginning of the series would never have reacted this way because revealing what you want means revealing a weakness that can be exploited.

Kenta going after the cigarette is a really tiny moment, but it is so significant and it shows that Kenta is in a different place now. It's not a perfect place, he’s a little bit feral, but he's not repressing everything anymore. I'M PROUD OF MY BOY!!!! LOOK AT HIM HAVING A FEELING AND SHOWING IT!!!!

Also I must take a moment to point out the fact that he could really hurt Dean if he wanted to, and instead he just shoves at him like a kid, and I love him for this.

Another question I've seen is "Why is he evil again" and I'm not sure how to address it because I don't quite know where it's coming from, aside from his RBF and the fact that he's working with Winner.

“Don’t act like you know me, loser.”

He apparently still doesn't like Winner and doesn't want to be associated with him, so there's got to be an externally driving reason for them to be working together, it’s not just “I’m teaming up with him because I feel like it.”

We don't know who these three are working for. It could be Tony or Way or a different villain, yes, but it’s still up in the air. Personally, I'm Team Pete when it comes to Mystery Man, because it does make sense to me that Pete would recruit them. Pete’s whole thing is pushing people towards redemption. If people want, I can go into more specific reasons as to why I feel like it’s Pete, but I don't want to derail this post into theories. Needless to say, we don’t know that it’s a villain they’re being recruited by.

Also, the only thing Kenta, Winner, and Dean did was just pull up in a car and stare mysteriously at X-Hunter, so it's a jump to say that they're evil because of this, esp when Dean is still in X-Hunter blue.

They're on the opposite side of the cemetery from Way and Tony—these shots parallel each other, both groups are keeping an eye on X-Hunter from the outside, but the framing of the tree is inverted. The two groups are looking at X-Hunter from different perspectives. There’s also a notable shift in bgm when the focus moves from Kenta, Winner, and Dean—to Way & Tony. To me, this is not "they’re working for Way and Tony" coded.

From the beginning, the writers have expressed their intention to portray Kenta as someone who is neither good nor evil. His character bio describes him as someone “who appears cold on the outside but has a warm and gentle heart.” Kenta has always been more than what he appears.

Anyways, that's all I wanted to say. This is probably a lot for like two minutes of footage, but I have been starving for months, so. Also I'm biased and I know it, I've been shipping Kenta Dean and Winner for months and just seeing them interact is a gift that Change2561 made specifically for me (and @oldsargasso). I don't expect everyone to be excited about where the show might go with Kenta—keeping your expectations low is frankly a good thing to do. Writers can fuck things up. I keep my expectations broad rather than low, tho—anything can happen, so I will be expressing a lot of excitement and anticipation. Again, I’m really just glad to have him back on my screen 🥲 But I don't think he's evil.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????

I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?
