AITA for trying to steal a kid's pet? WIBTIA for continuing?

That sounds way worse than it is. Please let me explain before judging.

Me (25M*) and my partner (25F*) (we'll call her J) are avid exotic animal collectors (we work for an underground organization). We're usually incredible at catching exotic animals (again, for our work—usually we only keep ones we can handle/we like, and we don't keep too many at a time. Our only consistent companion is a very chatty cat). We're also both incredibly intelligent. So I just can't understand why we can't get this one kid's pet.

The kid (10M), who we'll call A. Ais out on his own and constantly traveling. I couldn't tell you why. Usually he has older kids, what I can only assume are his babysitters. They change every time he travels. I don't know how he gets friends so easily. I'm not especially interested in any of their animals—none are quite as interesting or strong as A's pet. So we only really go after his.

After about fifteen years of doing this to this ten year old kid and successfully capturing his pet exactly ZERO times, J and I are kind of attached to both of them. I know she is, because I know how she gets when she cares about someone.

I think catching A's pet, at this point, is kind of more just a way to stay around him for J and I. Of course we want to succeed and move up at work, and of course we're frustrated by not capturing him for more than like, a week. Ever. But this ten year old has come a long way in the past twenty years.

Recently A has gone on to make a major life achievement award—again, at ten—and I'm just wondering. Are J and I in the wrong for trying to take A's pet? I mean, J insists he's kind of a twerp. If not, would we be in the wrong for keeping it up?

What are these acronyms?

little oc update! the first pic is what i think ive settled with (i honestly still dont like the face :^(), then there's a sketchbook page w/ some of her doodles. last pic is an earlier ver of her when i wanted to make her an esper

im frankly rlly rusty at writing out stories for my ocs because it's been a while, so if anything seems a little weird pls lmk! hopefully she sounds interesting orz

ill write out her story a bit bc i dont want to forget, but she's a mechanic who is set in a post-apocalyptic world caused by the uprise of automation and robots. people started to get really innovative and making machines that could do whatever they wanted, to the point that god was getting pretty upset with em for their shenanigans. so god did what any normal guy would do and smote a good portion of the human/living animal population, and the survivors split off into 2 warring factions: one that is extremely religious and devoted to god, and the other that aims to usurp god by rebuilding their technologically advanced life in the past.

i havent figured out her name or colors yet, but she stems from the latter faction, which has stratified their group into a few different jobs/sub-factions. those from her sub-group travel the world and rebuild the broken or scrapped machines and tame rogue ones to contribute to the entire faction's goal. she's much inherently emotional and empathetic, and that's caused some conflicts with her family and those around her who emphasizes "logical/rational decision making" beyond all else and end up stifling emotion in the process. as a result, she's learned to repress her emotions, but at the same time, is very explosive when she hits her limit.

i havent finished her story yet, but i think she's going to slowly learn more about the religious faction and develop her own philosophy separate to either one?

if i had to characterize her in a few words, it would be empathetic, kind, and energetic, but sometimes almost like a ticking time bomb.

also heres my silly fellow! the creature... his name is smoop! ive had a few iterations of him in the past + this one portrait right here:

hes a smug little guy! he's a hitman/conman who escaped from prison after being thrown under the bus by his former group despite being very obedient to them. now he just kinda roams around and picks up whatever job he likes, as long as its not TOO morally dubious (and if it is... well that's what the conman title is for)

he usually fights with the huge ball chains that are tied to his wrists, and since they're connected to his neck too theyve given him a perpetual slouch/shrimp posture (he js like me fr)

i have more on his backstory but that's for another time :'^) aka whenever i actually write it up
