I haven’t read and am not super interested in reading the Magicians books (especially bc at this point if I liked them more it would probably make me sad?) but it’s really interesting the kind of spin “magic comes from pain” gets in the books vs. the show. In this quote it feels much more personal and blatantly like a kind of intimate addressing of the double edged-sword “strengths” of experiencing and overcoming great trauma, or sadness or mental illness—the show has a cursory interpretation of this as pain just taking into account the “fuel” part which is both boring and an interpretation I would be salty about if I were the person with the story being adapted lmao even pre the show falling apart. I guess that’s why I don’t make the big bucks. But here it reflects a conclusion I’ve come to myself bc it was necessary—that I wouldn’t be the person I am without some of the terrible stuff I’ve experienced, for better or for worse. And narrowing to the specific, the kind of alchemical ache of the possibility of things being different or better as the source of magic? That rules…May have to reconsider my position on “magic comes from pain”
