Ao3 Kudos Bot at work

So, I got 5000 kudos in 12 hours, evenly distributed across all my fics, in a small fandom deep in hiatus. Obviously, these are fake, there just aren’t that many readers, and some of these stories are niche oneshots posted a year ago.

I’m sure some of you have noticed or experienced it yourselves, but I haven’t seen any posts about it on here, and this kudos bot has hit our little fandom HARD over the last few days. Every other newer fic is affected, although not all to the degree mine have been, some experience bursts of 40-100 kudos on a single fic. This is just a psa, if this happens to you, or you’re confused with the numbers you see with others. The writers themselves are not doing this, it’s a third party.

I do NOT want these kudos, they’re meaningless and not reflective of real reader interaction, and it feels really shitty to have these forced on you. This is not harmless, certainly not to me, but not on a larger scale either. 1) It makes it impossible for me to gauge my real stats, it’s hit every single one of my fics. 2) it’s demotivating because it’s burying the real guest kudos, I don’t know if any of them were real so I can’t be happy about them. 3) it’s unfairly promoting my fics relative to others, which I feel horrible about. Kudos is the most common metric for readers to sort by, and I don’t want to benefit at the expense of others. 4) It’s undermining the system at large, making kudos a useless metric by which to judge stories. 5) I worry people will suspect me of doing this myself and that I look dishonest, and it’ll be at best a reader-deterrent and at worst get me reported.

Ao3 is not able to do anything at present, was the response I and many others got. I understand it’s run by volunteers and resources are limited, and this post is not meant as a complaint. But I wanted to show the scope of this, because in a small fandom, this is a massive impact, fics don’t GET that many kudos, and it’s already at a point where kudos are meaningless, just a few days into this. And the bot is still at it.

Have other fandoms been hit this hard? Is it just less visible in larger fandoms? I’ve talked about it in discord servers and reddit and not gotten much response from outside the tdp fandom, but enough to know that it’s not EXCLUSIVE to tdp.

MXTX Diaspora May is back for 2024!

MXTX Diaspora May is an event in which Chinese diaspora creators come together to share the diverse aspects of Chinese culture, as well as connect with each other over lived experiences.

Through the promotion and creation of these fanworks, we hope to encourage thoughtful self-reflection throughout the broader fandom, especially with regard to embracing cultural humility and dismantling structures and behaviors that allow racism to flourish, both in fandom and in real life.

Support of MXTX Diaspora May will go a long way towards creating a more inclusive and open climate in our shared online spaces, especially for creators who rarely get their voices heard in the English-speaking side of fandom. We aim to uplift the unique voices and stories of our participants, and we encourage anyone who enjoys works from this event to share in the celebration of Chinese culture from Chinese creators.

Please note one major change from last year: all works must be complete at the time of posting. We will not accept works-in-progress into our collection.

Summary: Nagisa is the best assassin in the world, but there’s one politician that he just can’t seem to kill.

A/N: This fic was a love letter to a dead fandom, or at least one that I never expected any engagement in. Assassination Classroom is an amazing story, near-perfect, where the main character chose to become a teacher instead of an assassin. I wrote 3 chapters asking "what if he had gone the assassin route instead?", and each chapter felt standalone. I consider this to somehow be my best writing to date.

To Kill Your Darlings | Durarara! | Shizuo x Izaya | M/M | 35,131 words | E

Summary: Two years ago, Izaya kicked off his informant career by framing Shizuo and sending him to prison. Now, alone and betrayed, with nothing in the world to his name, Izaya must deal with the consequences.

A/N: This was the fic that got me back into writing, and really the only fic that I wrote purely for myself. Shizaya has been my OTP for over a decade, single-handedly made me obsessed with the enemies-to-lovers trope, and their UST is so off the charts here, so I really loved it.

A/N: This is the fic that got me through the pandemic. I hyper-fixated on a certain webtoon that promised a future Khun Family arc, and instead of waiting for 5 years, I decided to write it myself. This involved hours of research, reading theories and analysis, and making some of my own. This is a love letter to the canon lore and world building.

Summary: People grow flowers out of their bodies whenever they fall in love. It’s meant to be a courting ritual - a “crown of roses” for eternal love, a “thorn in your side” for unwilling infatuation. In some cases, these flowers can grow inside a person’s lungs, resulting in Hanahaki disease.

A/N: Hanahakiiiiiiii!!! This is the fic that is essentially my thesis on how the Hanahaki trope should work, thinly veiled behind a romance story.

Confessions | Genshin Impact | Ayato x Thoma | M/M | 13,689 words | T

Summary: Thoma has a plan. He will never confess. He will serve as a loyal retainer of the Kamisato Estate. He will slowly scale down this unreasonable crush into something a bit more reasonable, like undying loyalty. Nothing goes to plan.

A/N: I had so many headcanons for this fic, and such a ridiculous amount of love for the characters, that I felt like I had captured lightning in a bottle somehow, with how easy this was to write. I absolutely loved how it turned out, so this one is an easy top 5 for me.

Something In the Movies. (Gojo Satoru x F!Reader) - My first attempt at writing the beloved Gojo. I have been so nervous to write him, but I love writing a softer, more whimper-y Satoru. Let my man have some peace.

Seeing You, Seeing Me. (Joel Miller x F!Reader) - Statistically my best work ever. This story still feels like a fever dream because of how fast I wrote it. I've never felt so sure and so connected to a piece, and I'm damn proud of it.

The Better Strategy. (Astarion x Tav) - My first non-'you' story on this blog. Astarion is very precious to me, so I enjoy exploring what intimacy looks like outside of sex. My Astarion has more of an aversion towards it, but he direly craves intimacy. pssst and this is updating tomorrow!

Silver Underground (Levi Ackerman x F!Reader) - This fic basically saved my life in 2023. I have never worked, never planned, never adored such a story, and it's all because of the community and friends I've built. I never, ever imagined the response and support it has gotten. Fingers crossed we land the ending, yeah?
