Religion and spirituality emerge, as an escape route, because of the suffering caused by the existential fear of being conscious. This happens in a mechanic and indeliberate way, as one more of the qualities immanent to the expansion, change of state, and consubstantial transformation of the cosmos.
Consciousness, naturally, struggles against its extinction, through the biological and material tools at its disposal, just as the branches of trees grow and vie for the glimmers of light, ascending from the darkness of a leafy browse.
The cessation of this contest occurs spontaneously, identical to the collapse of the universe itself.
There is nothing to be done. You cannot stop it.
Just understand it, watching yourself.
