the ‘old money’ aesthetic
The rise of the old money aesthetic in today’s culture originates in escapism. It was the daydreaming of spending your quarantine in a mansion, a villa with an inbuilt gym, getting to pretend it’s simply an extra long spa retreat instead of spending it in your single-room studio apartment, in the shittiest part of the city.
Of course, it’s a lot older than most people think. It was a time when schools were for the white, rich males. It was the old-money-verses-new-money struggle, it was the fine line between the generational, old money (think the Bridgertons) and the gaudy, over-the-top, attempting to fit in new money (think the Featheringtons). The style has progressed over the decades, an almost secret-language between the elite of today’s society. It’s the right number of buttons on your shirt, it’s the amount of fade on your trousers. Being this level of rich gives the classy, almost careless style among the rich today.
The Bridgertons and Featheringtons, as mentioned above, describe this divide between the old and new money. The Bridgertons are in the muted blue, the elegant and distinct class, while the Featheringtons must prove their place in society, showing off with gaudy clothing and have a slightly desperate sense in their clothing, asking people to pay attention to them.
Being of new money is considered almost cheap, an irony in itself. We’ve all seen the Kardashians, and almost all of us hate them, for a multitude of reasons. Some may hate them for what they’ve done, some of might hate them on first glance simply because of how Featherington they seem. Most of us, however, hate them for what they represent. The Kardashians are almost everything wrong with new money today, like flying a private jet to save 20 minutes, or posting about extravagant parties when people are losing jobs. It’s people like them that cause us to hate the new money, and gravitate towards the old, even if we might resent the old all the more. While it may be because we’re jealous, the old money have always had racist undertones, traditionalist values and a rather rigid social hierarchy.
Perhaps you’ve seen the tiktok about west coast rich vs east coast rich. The west coast is logomania, flashy, extravagant. It’s all about a designer sports car and the latest model of iPhone. The east coast is about wealth, its the casual class, the, ‘tell me you’re rich without telling me you’re rich’ trend without the gaudy, over-the-top displays of wealth.
The old money aesthetic is (from what I’ve seen) button-down shirts, tennis skirts, sweater vests, cardigans, polo shirts, pearls, headbands and loafers, all in shades of off-white, beige, cream and white, with hints, of black, brown, grey and navy. You’ll see sailboats, private yachts, country clubs, vintage cars, dinner parties, lush (not lavish) gardens, floral wallpaper and mansions, but of the classier variety. It’s about studying at places like Oxford (a dream of my own), Cambridge, Ivy-league schools, with the Legacy application instead of the normal one. Picture Blair Waldorf, Evelyn Hugo, The Inheritance Games. While Evelyn and Avery aren’t old money, their vibe certainly is.
Some of the middle-class often fake this 'classier-than-thou’ lifestyle with similar clothing, which to the untrained eye seems like the real deal. However, after a period of time, it is clear in certain mannerisms that they weren’t born into the seemingly picturesque lifestyle, rather they are pale imitations. Perhaps it’s in the overly-rigid manner of clothing, or the unconfident manner, but it is easy to differentiate between the aspiring preppy students, and the ready-made. Their is a nonchalant carelessness in the ready-made, while the aspiring aren’t completely aware of every rule in this unofficial handbook.
While it is undoubtedly a stunning aesthetic, it’s roots are some of the reason it is slightly taboo. In older times, to have this old money flair, you had to be white, Anglo-Saxon protestant. The conservative mannerisms are definitely not something you’d want to casually show off in today’s society. They are given an almost fast pass to the higher-level universities, primarily due to the generations of their family having attended a certain place. Think about Paris, or Rory from Gilmore Girls, both who had generations of their family attend Harvard or Yale respectively. It’s unfair on the average Joe who wishes to attend the school all the same.
You may have the heard the audio 'Brown is an ivy league school’ and the response 'Everyone knows the real Ivy’s are the Holy Trinity: Harvard, Yale and Princeton’. It’s another distinction between New, and Old.  In Gossip Girl, while the show is a near-masterpiece, most of the characters are old money (adding to the aesthetic), but you can understand from there the very clear vibe of the old money. The Inheritance Games, with the country-club, wealthy-not-rich outlook, that the Hawthorne’s also have a very distinct old money vibe.
So, in conclusion, when Gen Z talk about old money, they don’t mean in the 'racial-oppression, better than thou’ manner, they mean the 'tennis skirt and reading Ovid in an elite school’. Dark Academia, overlooking its criticisms (which at the present I haven’t fully understood, so a deeper dive is to come), makes the elite aesthetic more accessible. As Ana Quiring argued, “You don’t need the Ivy League to read Ovid. In fact, reading the Metamorphoses with your online friends might be better, more joyful, than reading it at a top-notch school.” In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the top- notch school, aside from the bias to alumni’s children, but it’s definitely better to make this wonderful culture more widely available. The old money aesthetic is beautiful, after we put aside it’s critiques.

Sept. 20, 2023
i spent 45m on a group work and 1h15m reviewing basic electronics and eletrical engg for an upcoming test.
i went to class and ran some errands. i went to look for lamps bc the one i have isn't more like a nightstand lamp than a proper desk lamp. i don't like overhead light so my room is as dark as the first pic. i guess you can say i put the dark in dark academia.

neocities guide - why you should build your own html website
do you miss the charm of the 90s/00s web where sites had actual personality instead of the same minimalistic theme? are you feeling drained by social media and the constant corporate monopoly of your data and time? do you want to be excited about the internet again? try neocities!!
what is neocities?
neocities is a free hosting website that lets you build your own html website from scratch, with total creative control. in their own words: "we are tired of living in an online world where people are isolated from each other on boring, generic social networks that don't let us truly express ourselves. it's time we took back our personalities from these sterilized, lifeless, monetized, data mined, monitored addiction machines and let our creativity flourish again."
why should I make my own website?
web3 has been overtaken by capitalism & conformity. websites that once were meant to be fun online social spaces now exist solely to steal your data and sell you things. it sucks!! building a personal site is a great way to express yourself and take control of your online experience.
what would I even put on a website?
the best part about making your own site is that you can do literally whatever the hell you want! focus on a specific subject or make it a wild collection of all your interests. share your art! make a shrine for one of your interests! post a picture of every bird you see when you step outside! make a collection of your favorite blinkies! the world is your oyster !! here are some cool example sites to inspire you: recently updated neocities sites | it can be fun to just look through these and browse people's content! space bar | local interstellar dive bar creature feature | halloween & monsters big gulp supreme peanutbuttaz | personal site dragodiluna linwood | personal site patho grove | personal site

spanish vocab - cooking methods
Tumblr media
ahumar - to smoke
asar - to roast, to grill
blanquear - to blanch
brasear - to braise
cocer - to cook
cocinar - to cook
cocinar a la plancha - to grill
cocinar al vapor - to steam
deshidratar - to dehydrate
dorar - to brown
estofar - to stew
freír, fritar - to fry
guisar - to stew
hervir - to boil
hornear - to bake
pochar - to poach
rostizar - to roast
saltear - to sauté
sofreír - to sauté
tostar - to toast
making this list was interesting since sometimes a simple translation doesn't suffice or there's regional difference. here is some added nuance to some of the terms:
freír vs fritar: this one is just a regional difference. fritar, according to la rae, is used in bolivia, colombia & uruguay
saltear vs. sofreír: sofreír is what you do at the beginning with ingredients like onions and garlic on lower heat to make a sofrito which serves as a base. whereas saltear is more general, you stirfry vegetables
cocinar vs. cocer: in many cases interchangable, but an important difference is that cocinar refers to the general process of cooking (today we are going to cook spaghetti with meatballs = cocinar) whereas cocer refers to the act of cooking something to make it not raw. that said, the opposite of crudo 'raw' is cocido 'cooked'
estofar vs. guisar: an estofado is a guiso but a guiso isn't necessarily an estofado: both are stewing, but estofar is to cook something in its own juices while guisar adds liquid.
asar vs. rostizar: rostizar is just an mexican/central american to asar, but it seems the cooking method is the same

For my linguistsics degree, I did a project on why I'm seeing more people saying "on accident" instead of "by accident." I looked at almost a million pieces of writing pulled from news sites, blogs, academic articles and television transcripts. I found almost three hundred cases of "on accident" being used. It was a surprisingly even spread across sources. Even more interesting, I organized the hits by date and tracked an upward swing in use as time goes on. This means that the use of "on accident" is increasing over time, and may eventually supplant and drive out the classic usage of "by accident." I like to call this prepositional shift.
Now, looking at my data and looking at the age ranges of the writers or speakers, the majority of them were under the age of thirty. So I interviewed a panel of people, choosing twenty with a spread of about half above thirty, and half below. Those older than thirty years of age felt "strongly" or "very strongly" that "on accident" was wrong in all cases, and that "by accident" was the only correct phrase. However, those younger than thirty were much less rigorous, with more than half feeling "ambivalent" or "less strongly" about which was correct. This demonstrates a generational link in preposition usage.
When presented with options for the definitions of "by" and "on," we also get some interesting data. For by, there are two main definitions according to the Oxford English Dictionary: 1. Identifying the agent performing an action. Or 2. Indicating the means of achieving something. Whereas "on" has many more definitions, the pertinent ones being 1. To indicate the manner of doing something or 2. To indicate active involvement in a condition or status. By the above definitions, either "by accident" or "on accident" is a correct usage of the term. However, native speakers of English could not successfully define either preposition, instead just choosing one, the other, or both as "sounding correct."
The only evidence for a rule-based shift that I could find was a correlation with the paired phrase for the opposite condition "on purpose." While the younger interviewees were ambivalent about the correctness of "on accident," they uniformly rejected the correctness of the suggested phrase "by purpose." So the shift can only be in one direction according the the native ear, towards the preposition "on."
Whether this means that the particular usage of "by" is becoming archaic or the definition of "on" is expanding is a possible subject of further study using a wider range of phrases. But I found the wider acceptance of "on accident" versus "by accident" to be a fascinating look at how prepositions can shift meaning and usage over time.
So now I'm curious, five years from my initial study (and itching to try the Tumblr poll feature):

Sakura is an expert at calming Sasuke down after he has a nightmare. She woke up in the middle of the night having heard a distressing noise. I picture this being at the beginning of them traveling together, they don’t yet share a common sleeping place. They’re in the middle of the forest in their sleeping bags and Sasuke is clearly disturbed in his sleep.
Sakura gently walks over and slowly sits, unsure if he’ll have a gut reaction and attack her when he startles awake. She gently places a hand on his forehead, smoothing back his slightly sweaty hair. She says his name softly trying to wake him up slowly and not scare him. Eventually he does wake up with a gasp, when his eyes open she can clearly see the panic and fear that he didn’t have the time to mask. Once he registers her presence he tries to slide the mask on, embarrassed that she had seen him having a nightmare. She asks if he’s okay which he nods silently, she offers to talk about it if he feels comfortable but he declines. Sakura sits with him for a little while, just in quiet company.
Sakura goes to move back to her sleeping bag and give him space, Sasuke grabs her wrist and pulls her into an embrace. Sakura, initially startled by his sudden contact, settles into the hug and wraps her arms around his neck. Sasuke thanks her, it throws her back to the times before he had said such words and she could feel the tears stinging the back of her eyes. This thank you feels deep, he’s thanking her for being there, beyond just the nightmare. Sasuke subconsciously apologizes constantly for his actions, whether it be in actions, glances or words. She can tell sometimes by his stares that he’s astonished that she still walks by his side.
She nuzzles into his neck with a quiet ‘You’re welcome’ and is surprised when she feels him mimic the movement. He then asks quietly, almost unheard by her, “Stay with me?” Sakura pulls away surprised and then nods, this time the tears spring to her eyes. Sasuke pulls her into his sleeping bag, holding her close for the rest of the night, nightmares not disturbing his slumber. After that night, it was a silent agreement that they would share sleeping quarters, Sasuke’s nightmares became fewer and farther between. It became the first step towards clear intimacy between them, a closeness and understanding of how much they truly needed each other.
