Now that was interesting.

Toji grinned. “Making promises you can’t keep to a brat you’ve only known for a day? Doesn’t sound very shinobi-like.”

Red cocked his head. “And what do you know about shinobi?”

“Nothing.” Toji shrugged. “Except that the ones I’ve fought so far are weaklings, and you all are surprisingly tight-knit for a bunch of assassins.”

As though to prove Toji’s second assessment wrong, Red gave a thoughtful hum instead of defending his fallen comrades. “It was a personal promise. Megumi-kun reminds me of myself.”

A few minutes later, Hisui was standing on a step stool under the kitchen doorway and pinning a mistletoe in place.

“How will this convince Dad to buy decorations?” Megumi asked, doubtful.

Megumi was pretty sure most people didn’t bother putting up mistletoe, unless they were handsy old men like his dad who would happily take any excuse to kiss their romantic partner.

Megumi gets a front row seat of his dad’s “flirting” technique.

Summary: An AU in which Toji follows his instincts and bails on round two against Gojo, once he realizes the Gojo brat underwent some kind of evolution instead of dying. By chance, he stumbles on a guy he suspects can see curses, and has an interesting ability (Regen Quirk!Hisui). He uses Megumi’s shikigami to expose him.

Takes place a few years after the Star Plasma Vessel/Hidden Inventory Arc.

Dad jostled Megumi a little in his arms and grinned. “You’re gonna meet my new friend, Hisui. I think you’ll get along.”

Megumi rolled his eyes, earning himself another teeth-clacking bounce. Dad didn’t have friends. He had people he worked with, like Shiwoo-san, people he worked for, people he played “nicely” with to get what he wanted, and people he played not-so-nicely with for the same reason.

The world was a giant playground that Dad ruled with either an iron fist or a smile. Tsumiki and him were the only exceptions in Dad’s world. Whoever this Hisui person was, probably fell into one of the “play” categories.

Hisui’s free hand darted up to hold his throat, but he managed to redirect it to grab the front of his shirt instead. Toji watched him do so with sharp, glittering eyes.

Unease crept up Hisui’s rigid spine, settling in like frost in his lungs. His throat had been bothering him for weeks now. Too long to pass it off as a cold. It was getting harder and harder to speak normally the more time passed, like there was a hand squeezing his vocal cords tight. A hand… Or something he couldn’t see.

Something like a curse.
