How to Tell If That Post of Advice Is AI Bullshit
Right, I wasn't going to write more on this, but every time I block an obvious AI-driven blog, five more clutter up the tags. So this is my current (April 2024) advice on how to spot AI posts passing themselves off as useful writing advice.
No Personality - Look up a long-running writing blog, you'll notice most people try to make their posts engaging and coming from a personal perspective. We do this because we're writers and, well, we want to convey a sense of ourselves to our readers. A lot of AI posts are straight-forward - no sense of an actual person writing them, no variation in tone or text.
No Examples - No attempts to show how pieces of advice would work in a story, or cite a work where you could see it in action. An AI post might tell you to describe a person by highlighting two or three features, and that's great, but it's hard to figure out how that works without an example.
Short, Unhelpful Definitions - A lot of what I've seen amount to two or three-sentence listicles. 'When you want to write foreshadowing, include a hint of what you want foreshadowed in an earlier chapter.' Cool beans, could've figured that out myself.
SEO/AI Prompt Language Included - I've seen way too many posts start with "this post is about..." or "now we will discuss..." or "in this post we will..." in every single blog. This language is meant to catch a search engine or is ChatGPT reframing the prompt question. It's not a natural way of writing a post for the average tumblr user.
Oddly Clinical Language - Right, I'm calling out that post that tried to give advice on writing gay characters that called us "homosexuals" the entire time. That's a generative machine trying to stay within certain parameters, not an actual person who knows that's not a word you'd use unless you were trying to be insulting or dunking on your own gay ass in the funniest way possible.
Too Perfect - Most generative AI does not make mistakes (this is how many a student gets caught trying to use it to cheat). You can find ways to make it sound more natural and have it make mistakes, but that takes time and effort, and neither of those are really a factor in these posts. They also tend to have really polished graphics and use the same format every time.
Maximized Tags (That Are Pointless) - Anyone who uses more than 10 one-word tags is a cop. Okay, fine, I'm joking, but there's a minimal amount of tags that are actually useful when promoting a post. More tags are not going to get a post noticed by the algorithm, there is no algorithm. Not everyone has to use their tags to make snarky comments, but if your tags look like a spambot, I'm gonna assume you're a spambot.
No Reblogs From The Rest of Writblr - I'm always finding new Writblr folks who have been around for awhile, but every real person I've seen reblogs posts from other people. We've all got other stuff to do, I'm writing this blog to help others and so are they, the whole point of tumblr is to pass along something you think is great.
While you'll probably see some variation in the future - as people get wise to obviously generated text, they'll try to make it look less generated - but overall, there's still going to be tells to when something is fake.
I don't have any real advice for what to do about this (other than block those blogs, which is what I do). Like most AI bullshit, I suspect most of these blogs are just another grift, attempting to build large follower counts to leverage or sell something to in the future. They may progress past these tattletale features, but I'm still going to block them when I see them. I don't see any value in writing advice compiled from the work of better writers who put the effort in when I can just go find those writers myself.

The Story (KnucklesxRouge)
[This is a written-adaptation of one of my canon timelines, as written by now-here-for-many-things. Thank you so much for turning this into a proper written story, you made it exactly as I saw it in my head!]
âKnuckles!! KNUCKLES!!!â
A red-furred echidna opened a violet eye as he was disturbed from his rest. He sat up with a grunt and looked around for the person calling him.
At the bottom of the shrine he sat on, at the end of the stairs, was a pink hedgehog with bright, jade green eyes. She was frantically waving a paper in her hand, and had a wide smile on her face. Knuckles rolled his eyes and leaned forward, raising an eye ridge. What was it she wanted so badly to show him?
âKNUCKLES!â
âJust come up here,â Knuckles called down in exasperation.
Amy sprinted up the old stone steps two at a time, making it to the top in a few seconds. âGuess what, guess what?â
âWhat?â
âNooo, you have to guess!!!â Amy whined.
âAre you really going to make me do this,â Knuckles asked, sighing.
âFine,â Amy huffed. âParty Pooper. Anyways, look at this!!â She held up the paper again, for Knuckles to see clearly.
Knuckles scanned the paper. It had a picture of a tall, female bat with white fur and a curvy figure. Her teal eyes bore out of the picture as if she were staring directly at Knuckles, which bothered him greatly. He averted his eyes to the text.
Famous Jewel Hunter âRouge the Batâ Returns From Worldwide Journey.
Knuckles turned around, folding his arms and letting out a humph. âWhatâd you show me this for? Wordâs been going around for a while. Sheâs probably gonna make this huge, flashy entrance.â
âDid you even read the small print?â Amy sighed, turning the paper over and beginning to read the details. âRouge the bat is performing at a local bar in Station Square. After years away from home, this baââ
âAnd what makes you think I even care,â interrupted Knuckles, snapping at her. âItâs just like Rouge to make a melodramatic comeback. I bet she delivered the information to the news herself. Jumping out of a cake or something.â
âThatâs what you did,â Amy pointed out, raising an eye ridge in amusement.
âTh-thatâs not my point,â Knuckles huffed, his cheeks pinkening a little, and not just from embarrassment. âLook, I donât care that Rouge came back, okay? To be honest, I barely even noticed she was gone. Besides, if itâs so important, why didnât she tell us herself?â
âYeah, the rest of us were wondering that too,â Amy sighed, scratching the back of her head. âBut, you know, itâs better than nothing.â
âNothing would be better,â Knuckles muttered.
âStop being so rude,â Amy said, slapping his arm. âLook, Rouge would want you there. Come on, whatâs the harm in it?â
âLook, Iâm not coming, all right?â Knuckles grit his teeth, glaring at Amy. âAnd if you keep bugging me about it, thatâll just make me more sure of myself.â
Amy smiled slightly. âItâs at 7,â She said knowingly, beginning to walk back down the stairs.
âI said Iâm not coming,â Knuckles called.
âWeâll see about that,â The pink hedgehog called back.
***
The bar was filled with dozens of Mobians, awaiting Rougeâs return. Seats were saved for her closer friends, thankfully for the gang, who had arrived early but had still been held back by the crowd.
Sonic and Amy sat at one table, the couple having been together for a couple years now. Amy folded her arms, looking over at Sonic. âSonic, I swear, if she comes out with some sexy number, youâd better look away.â
Her speedy boyfriend chuckled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and kissing her cheek in order to reassure her. âRelax, babe, I love you.â
âHmmph, weâll see about that,â Amy said, rolling her eyes.
At another table sat an older, much taller teenage Miles âTailsâ Prower, with a Mobian-like robot at his side. âYou found me after Rouge left, correct?â The female form, named CC, asked.
âYeah,â Tails said, scratching the back of his head. âShe was kind of a show-off, what with what she wore and her attitude. It doesnât surprise me that sheâd come back with a big announcement like this.â
CC tilted her head. âShe was one of your friends, correct?â
âYou could say so,â Tails said.
âThen, if she held this closeness with you, why did she not inform you of her arrival more personally?â CC asked.
âWell⌠weâre not really sure,â the kitsune shrugged. âMaybe she was busy doing other things.â
âBut there have been rumors about her coming for weeks now,â CC objected.
Tails simply shrugged again, turning his eyes to the stage.
The lights had dimmed as the show began to start. A hush fell over the crowd as they all waited for Rouge to appear.
And in the entrance, a figure silently slipped in while everybody was distracted.
Knuckles crept to an unoccupied seat in the back and sat in it, slouching downwards. He grabbed the edge of an old cowboy hat and pulled it down, in order to hide his face but still able to see. He hadnât worn it for a while, but it miraculously still fit.
The curtains opened.
Silence.
Rouge the bat sat on a three-legged stool, guitar in hand. She looked up at the crowd, face devoid of any emotion. Her fingers pressed against the neck of the guitar, and began to strum a few chords.
Then she sang.
âAll of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am.
So many stories of where Iâve been,
And now Iâve got to where I am.
But these stories donât mean anything
When youâve got no one to tell them to,
Itâs trueâŚ
I was made for you.â
Even though she wasnât showing much emotion, her eyes couldnât stop from searching the crowd.
Knuckles shrunk down even farther as he felt her gaze getting closer.
âI climbed across the mountaintops,
Swam all across the ocean blue,
I crossed all the lines and broke all the rules,
And, baby,
I broke them all for you!
Oh, because even when I was flat broke,
You made me feel like a million bucks,
You do!
I was made for you.â
Amy put a hand on her heart, feeling tears well up in her eyes. She squeezed Sonicâs hand, looking over at him. âThis is so unlike Rouge,â She whispered.
Sonic looked over at Amy and smiled.
âTails, this is not the show you suggested she would put on,â CC said. âPerhaps sheâs changed?â
Tails watched Rouge strum the guitar. âMaybe.â
Knuckles felt his heart ache. Even though he would never admit it, not in a million years, he still knew he liked Rouge. And this song⌠was about her travels. Was about her and Shadow. He couldnât stand it anymore.
He stood, his face hidden by his hat. He turned, about to leave, when he felt someoneâs gaze bearing into his shoulder. Despite his better judgment, he turned around.
Rouge was looking right at him, tears gathering gat the edge of her vision. The edges of her lips curved up slightly.
âYou see the smile thatâs on my mouth,
Itâs hiding the words that donât come outâŚ
All of the friends who think that Iâm blessed,
They donât know my head is a mess.
No, they donât know who I really am,
And they donât know what Iâve been through
Like you do,
I was made for you.â
Knuckles fully turned to face Rouge, lifting his hat up and off of his head, staring into her eyes.
Rouge smiled.
âAnd all of these lines across my face,
Tell you the story of who I am!
So many stories of where Iâve been,
And how Iâve got to where I am
Oh, but these stories donât mean anything
When youâve got no one to tell them to,
Itâs true,
I was made for you.â
Oh, and itâs trueâŚ
I was made
For youâŚâ
Knuckles lost sight of Rouge as the crowd stood, clapping and cheering loudly.
Amy clapped wildly and laughed, wiping a few tears from her eyes, to Sonicâs amusement.
Tails smiled widely, while CC clapped politely.
The curtains closed, and the guests who came just for the show left. Which was mostly everyone, because only Sonic, Amy, Tails, CC, and Knuckles remained.
Rouge came out from behind stage and raised a hand in greeting, a smirk crossing her face. All sign of her previous, open self was gone. âHello, ladies.â
âRouge!â Amy ran up and hugged the bat, squeezing her tight. âItâs been so long, how are you?â
âGood, honey, never been better.â Rouge patted Amyâs back. âYou can let go now.â
Knuckles stood in the back, watching as the group all conversed and caught up, asking and answering many questions. CC and Rouge were formally introduced to each other, and the two shook hands.
âPleased to meet you, Rouge,â CC said with a polite smile. âAlthough I must ask, why didnât you come tell your friend personally that you were arriving.â
âI wanted it to be a surprise!â
The entire group was silent.
âWhat?â
âYou realize, like, all of Mobius knew about your arrival, right?â Sonic said, raising an eye ridge and folding his arms.
âReally? I guess word travels fast around here. I just got here a few days ago.â Rouge hummed thoughtfully. âIn that case, I guess it was kind of pointless, huh? Oh well, no harm, no foul.â While she spoke, her eyes traveled around the room.
She kept looking at Knuckles.
Tails noticed. âUh, well, Iâd love to stay and chat, but, uhâŚâ
CC understood what the fox was doing. âTails has agreed to give me upgrades today. â She grabbed Tailsâ arm. âWe apologize for our rudeness, but these are needed swiftly.â
âUh, yeah, that.â Tails waved to the group. âSee you guys later!â
Amy caught the pairâs drift. âOh, that reminds me. Me and Sonic need to check up on Eggmanâs activity. You never know what heâs up to.â
âUhâŚâ Oblivous Sonic was oblivious. âWhaââ
Amy slapped a hand over his mouth and linked their arms together. âMaybe we can talk after. See ya, Rouge!â She waved as she left the building after Tails and CC.
Rouge stood there for a few seconds, confused, before finally turning to face Knuckles.
The echidna scratched the back of his head, clearing his throat. âUh â hey, Rouge. Whatâs up?â
âHey, Knux. Still wearing that hat?â
âWhaââ Knuckles quickly fumbled with the apparel, before hiding it behind his back. âN-No, whatâd make you think that?â
Rouge rolled her eyes. âYouâre a terrible liar,â she sighed, putting a hand on her hip. âSpeaking of whichâŚâ A mischievous grin crept up her face. âDidja miss me?â
âMiss you?â Knuckles snorted. âAre you kidding me? As if. Barely even noticed you were gone. In fact, nothing even changed. I wouldnât have cared if you even stayed away.â
He paused as silence emanated from the bat.
âUgh, youâre impossible!!â Rouge snapped finally, pressing a hand to her forehead. âYou know â you know all these years, even before I left, I put up with you and your stupid stubbornness. I played along, all right? I pretended to go with what you were doing. And you know where that got me? No where? NO WHERE, you stupid, stubborn, pig-headedâ!!!â
She was interrupted as Knuckles pulled her into a tight hug, squeezing his eyes shut. âLook, Iâm sorry,â He forced out. It was unnatural for him to apologize. Even when he was proven wrong, he would never admit he was right. Ever.
But here he was. âI missed you, all right? Every single day I would look out and wonder if you were ever coming back. If Shadow had let anything happen to you â If â You did anything with him ââ Knuckles cut himself off.
Rouge slowly wrapped her arms around Knuckles, closing her eyes. âShut up. I missed you too, you big jerk.â
