This is a totally new thing that was added and so it’s impossible to say how it’s going to turn out long-term, that when Ami touched Usagi, she had a brief vision of the Moon Kingdom.  Is it Usagi’s powers?  Is it Ami’s memories coming back?  Those are the two options and both have evidence for them. The early manga does have moments of Usagi being potentially psychic, but pretty quickly switches over to Mamoru being the psychic one, while Usagi is the powerhouse and I definitely admit that that’s where my heart is, that they’re still totally a team of equals, that that equality is so important, that it’s totally okay that the girl is the powerhouse and the boy is the psychic healer and it changes nothing about how they are in love and they support each other and it’s a two way street with them. You can make a case that Usagi’s got some psychic powers going on, that Ami touching her is tapping into those.  But I kind of don’t want to, because I think the other path makes more sense. Previous to this, every shot we’ve seen of Ami has been where she’s blank-faced and just moving through her life without much openness at all, she’s very reserved and distant, that’s what defines her to other people, pretty much.  But as soon as she sees Usagi, she’s instantly more comfortable.  Even before they touch, Ami’s already saying more things and smiling at her, like she instantly recognizes this person as a friend.  Part of that is just Usagi’s sunny personality, but I think it ties in with something that’s going to start happening more and more soon— That the Sailor Senshi are regaining their memories.  They have brief flashes all along the way, from the moment they meet each other, they start remembering pieces of their past.  It doesn’t come all at once, that’s why they have such trouble finding the Princess, because they don’t remember, but there’s some instincts that are kicking into gear immediately. Ami being immediately  more open and affectionate with Usagi says to me that Ami instinctively trusts her.  So, when their hands touch, that’s another jolt to her system, that a memory floats free, another piece of the instant FRIEND PRINCESS LOVE PROTECT HAPPINESS SPECIAL flood that probably comes with seeing Usagi.  I don’t see it as a psychic thing, but instead that Ami’s powers are waking up, now that her princess is here to be her friend again. AND LET ME TELL YOU I DEFINITELY HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THESE GIRLS ALL HAVING DEEP INSTINCTUAL FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER, THAT TOTAL MEMORY LOSS THROUGH REINCARNATION CANNOT STOP THEY, THERE WAS NO WAY THEY WEREN’T GOING TO FIND EACH OTHER AGAIN AND INSTANTLY LOVE EACH OTHER.
