Cook turned his head away, near tears himself. “Dr. Foster, that fucking cocksucker--”
“Cook,” Katie stopped him.
“Beat him to death,” Effy mumbled with no emotion in her voice, on her face an absolute blank stare, tears running down her face but not affecting her composure.
“What?” With tears in her eyes, Naomi went up to Emily and hugged her, not able to imagine losing her; the pain in the room was palpable. Effy turned and walked up the stairs, drifting out of the room. Cook slid down the wall and sat on the floor, putting his head in his hands. “Fucking hell.” And his shoulders shook with his silent sobs. Cook grasped the bottle of whiskey sitting at his feet and took several large gulps like it was water, blindly handing it to anyone who wanted to take it.
JJ wasn’t present, and Naomi grew worried. “Where’s JJ?”
“He said he couldn’t have a party right now,” Katie filled her in. “And I don’t know that I can either.” Angry and emotional, she left, her mascara stained on her face, and climbed up the stairs.
The silence penetrated the room. It was just Naomi, Emily, Cook, and Panda in the room now. Panda sat looking at her feet. The bottle was passed to Naomi and she leaned back and lowered herself onto the couch, taking a drink of the whiskey, letting it burn down her throat. She offered some to Emily. “This is so fucked up. Emily, do you want -- you should go be with Katie,” she said, wiping her tears. “I love you,” she said tearfully, squeezing her hand and running her finger over the ring on Emily’s finger.
The sense of foreboding that had cast itself over Emily and Naomi when Cook asked Emily to check on Effy had faded as Naomi’s thoughts turned to seeing and celebrating with her friends at this party Katie was throwing for them. Emily now wore Naomi’s ring on her fourth finger and the two buzzed with excitement and love. Naomi didn’t sleep on the plane this time, too excited with her girlfriend sitting next to her and her thoughts reviewing all the times they had had in Mexico. The plane landed in Bristol and Naomi went with Emily to baggage claim to grab her bags, carrying her small carry-on bag over her shoulder.
After grabbing their bags, they headed to the party, Naomi holding Emily’s hand and swinging their hands between them happily. “Ready, babe?” Naomi asked, placing a kiss on Emily’s lips. Apparently the party was taking place at Effy’s house as she had an empty place at the moment. Knocking on the door, they waited for an answer. Katie came to the door and opened it, and inside, everyone sat around on the couch and chairs with a drink in hand and a frown on their face. The tension that hit Naomi when she entered the room caused her heart to beat faster and her face to turn in concern.
“What’s going on?” Naomi asked, turning to look for Effy, but instead they saw Cook walking up and placing a hand on the two girls’ shoulders, protectively.
“Freddie,” was all he said, struggling for words, before Effy walked up behind him, solemn, before her expression broke and tears tumbled from her eyes.
And all at once the happiness faded away.

Emily and I had a great time in Mexico. It’ll still be here when we decide to go back. Now it’s back to Bristol, at least we get to see our friends and there’s apparently a party for us, yeah? See you guys soon!

Now let’s go home and give our friends and families the news. I think my eyes have watered just a bit. I just – I’m so happy.
Emily’s ring
I love you, Ems.
