Regarding the email portion of the post, my opinion is that though he could be lying, it makes more sense if he’s telling the truth that she emailed him.

I don’t believe all of it, though. He said he found her identity through the emails, which I am skeptical of. He’s actually not the only person who she emailed! Some people in the Livejournal fanclub talked about her emailing them back. Wouldn’t they have been able to see a name accidentally inserted in the sender information, too?

However, it does provide a reason why midnitegoff was added.

He never hacked into the account. A few people did before, but the password was changed since and it was long before midnitegoff was made.

He also stated he doesn’t know why she added him.

My opinion is that it’s pretty common to add someone after having a short conversation like that, especially for fanfiction sites.

Yes, the bloodyrists and bloodytearz accounts added very few friends. However, my theory is that Tara had a brief spark of inspiration to continue in 2009 and adding him as a favorite was part of that, especially since he wrote some My Immortal parodies. It could have also been a way of passing on the torch for those type of parodies in case she decided not to continue. The emails took place in 2009, along with the last update to her profile and her last IMDb posts.

Hi! Thanks for the question. I assume you mean the period inside dialogue instead of a comma, correct? For example:

“My name’s Harry Potter, although most people call me Vampire these days.” he grumbled.

Raven did the same thing:

"That's an unusual name. But I guess I can't fucking talk. My name's Eternity." said Eternity. "Cool." said Draco.

It’s a common mistake, especially among young writers, so it’s not unusual to appear among multiple people. Assuming Raven was a subtle satire, it wouldn’t be surprising if she purposely chose to add minor mistakes such as that.

Yes. It got deleted for good reason, because the line was definitely crossed at certain points. For that reason, I’ll be vague. I love the idea of Tara being a prep all along, and she always seemed incredibly intelligent and clever to pull of such an iconic satire.

That being said, while on the topic, I’ll also add my opinion on what led up to it. I do believe Todd/Toby and Tara genuinely communicated through email. Everything makes more sense that way.

What’s more likely:

A) Tara deciding to favorite midnitegoff after having a few conversations?

B) Midnitegoff being added for no apparent reason (since Todd never logged on to the account), Todd successfully spoofing the email metadeta, and then finding the proper technical information of a foreign boarding school from 2009 (being long outdated, as it changes over time)?

My choice is A.

Do you think My Immortal was genuine or satire?

Satire for sure! Even reading it with an open mind, I was irrevocably convinced it was satire by chapter 5.

Tara’s typos are often not just typos but similar sounding words, such as mastication. Autocorrect wasn’t a thing or at least wasn’t common back then, so she had to write those out. Awful spelling was common back then, and so was her typing style, but it was almost never that bad.

Being 12-14 before and having my own bouts of Marysueisms, I can tell Ebony is not genuine wish fulfillment. For example, Ebony and Draco had no dignity after Dumbledore caught them in the forest while they were doing you-know-what. If Tara really was an angst filled teenager, she would have had comeuppance at Dumbledore and McGonagall for wronging Ebony, or at least have Ebony bite them with a witty remark. Instead, they are called “mediocre dunces” and “HORNY SIMPLETONS” (absolutely iconic insults btw) without further comment.

Not only did whoever was behind Tara make fun of every badfic trope, but she pulled off portraying each HP character in the most hilarious way possible.

And some things truly speak for themselves...

What do you think about the theory that the account Raven favourited was the real person behind Raven and Tara?

Well, I was absolutely certain it was her, until she said on Twitter that she is not the author. 😅 Despite it being a hard pill to swallow, I’m going to take her word for it.

With these things pointing at it being her:

1) The account favorite

2) Reviews in “I’m Not Okay” mentioning lionesswhite was Raven’s email at the time

3) The fact Lionessblack wrote a bunch of Babysitter’s Club works and Raven moderated and posted in a Babysitter’s Club forum.

It means if Lionessblack had no involvement, it looks like whoever was behind Raven deliberately set her up to make it look like she was her. Which is wild! And honestly, that makes me appreciate Raven (and Tara?) even more, lol. I wonder why her... and also why in general?!

However, Lionessblack not actually being involved does make some sense. It seemed strange that Raven would randomly participate in a Babysitter’s Club forum if that was Lionessblack’s troll account, because that’s something she easily could have done on her main, especially since it wasn’t part of Raven’s character. My theory is whoever did it wanted to make it seem Lionessblack accidentally posted that on Raven’s account.

I’ve seen the theory Raven was simply a fan of her work and showing appreciation. That intention seems unlikely, even if she was real, namely due to her email being lionesswhite. It’s possible but very odd. If someone was THAT obsessed with her, they probably would have posted Babysitter’s Club or at least some RENT works.

It’s more likely Raven was a troll, and a troll account isn’t a logical place to showcase appreciation toward favorite author(s). Whoever Raven was definitely could have been a genuine fan of Lionessblack, but it’s not the sole intention behind making these connections.

Has anyone ever found anything about the other accounts Tara and Raven follow? Do you know if she followed them before the hacking?

Mrs.Soon-2-B-KevinCovais is the other account (besides Raven and xxxmidnitegoffxxx) followed by Tara. The account was made February 17th 2006, only a few weeks before the first chapter of My Immortal was published. Whether this is a coincidence or not is unknown, but it’s notable. Unfortunately, I don’t know when that account was added. I cannot find any screenshots before 2009 that show her friends list or archives of Tara’s profile prior to 2013.

I don’t believe the account Mrs.Soon-2-B-KevinCovais added (lunarlily828) is Tara or Raven. She says she’s not a fan of “YOAI”, so it’s unlikely she would have written My Immortal, even as a troll.

Kevin Covais was a contestant on American Idol in 2006. Tara lists “bo” as one of her dislikes on her IMDb bio, who was also an American Idol contestant in 2005? (Okay, that’s a huge stretch. Maybe she meant she dislikes B.O.) Lunarlily828′s bio also mentions a classmate named Kevin.

As for xxxmidnitegoffxxx, that account was made November 3rd 2007, so that was the earliest date it could have been added. That was 4 months after My Immortal stopped updating. Anywhere between November 2007 to December 2009 are possible dates. There seems to be no mention of xxxmidnitegoffxx related to My Immortal until 2008, so I believe that would be the most likely time it was added.

Mrs.Soon-2-B-KevinCovais could have been added before or after the hacking, but xxxmidnitegoffxxx was added after the hacking.

You should watch SarahZ's most recent video. It's not as much about My Immortal as it is about 20 ff sock puppets operated by a guy claiming to be Tara.

Thanks for reaching out! I saw it and have a lot of thoughts on it. First, it was shitty of Sarah Z to hint at Toby’s personal information, especially since none of it was necessary. It left a sour taste and ruined the video for me. However, I’m glad someone finally acknowledged and debunked his claim.

Shortly after the 2017 Rose Christo debacle, I found out about Todd/Toby. Like Sarah Z, I actually came to the conclusion he had a lot of alts too, haha. Didn’t know it went that deep, though.

I think she got a few things wrong in the video. Multiple people may have logged on her account, but the evidence Todd/Toby himself actually logged on to Tara’s account is tenuous. The pieces of evidence are that 1) he is on her friends list 2) the bio change. The friends list is the only valid evidence, because as Furiousgalaxypizza pointed out, there is no evidence Tara’s bio changed to mention Gareth Vandersleld besides xxxbloodyrists667xxx, and who is known for making tons of sock puppets?

Also, she missed how in the My Immortal spinoffs, it was supposedly by a duo. Whether Liamy/Xanthan Gum is a separate person from Todd/Toby (it’s possible he was real and they were friends collaborating), Liamy did confess to them not actually being Tara and lying about Raven dying. And they both collaborated on it (unless they are the same person), so if Liamy said he was lying, obviously Todd/Toby was part of the lying too.

Why Chapter 39 of My Immortal was due to an actual hacker

After considering some findings, I’m confident in this theory. And thus, I’m confident anyone who claims to be Tara Gilesbie while claiming the hacked chapter was faked is not being honest. Below I will explain why I believe so and how I came across this information in the first place.

All this was from a long chain of breadcrumbs. Let’s go back… all to the mid 2000s in the LiveJournal days when Tara Gilesbie had a dedicated fan club.

The Tara Gilesbie Fan Club

One thing that particularly stuck out was members mentioning finding Tara through IMDb. Yes, you heard right.

The first is from ‘golden_helikaon’ on 2008-01-19 writing, “I found it on the Order of the Phoenix IMDb board. There were several long threads dedicated to ripping her apart with every new chapter.”

The second comment is from ‘heartdreamerz’ on 2008-01-20 writing, “It was almost 2 years ago and I’ve told this story many times. I knew Tara a month before My Immortal was published. It was on IMDb’s board for My Chemical Romance. When the story came out I knew about it but didn’t pay attention because I wasn’t into HP at the moment. Then, like icarus_malfoy wrote, there were the threads about her and that’s when my interest started. There were also another troll on the His Dark Materials…” (Image cuts off.) End description.]

According to this, Tara Gilesbie was already tyrannizing the internet before she posted My Immortal. This actually is very consistent with the fact “Tara Gliesbie is totlly Gottik” was a petition that existed in November 2005. (My Immortal was posted in March 2006.)

This IMDb profile seemed very intriguing. It hasn’t been mentioned much, and isn’t considered to be official by most people. Was it a legitimate account? If so, was there gothicness we were deprived of all along? I searched to try find out more about it, hoping screen captures or something would turn up. Luckily, one of the same members copied and pasted Tara’s bio in another comment.

People like to copy & paste things stupid things to laugh at all the time (no offense Tara), so I thought: why not Google some of the bio? Maybe whoever did that posted additional stuff.

And it worked! (I found more content from Tara’s supposed IMDb, but more on that for a different post.)

When searching the bio, a Reddit thread about Rose Christo popped up.

During Rose Christo’s brief reign, a user said Rose’s claims seemed to check out. This user actually happens to be the same commenter, Heartdreamerz, in the LiveJournal thread. (Which makes sense, considering she’s the one who originally had the bio I was searching.) 

If you don’t feel like clicking the Reddit link, basically she confirmed Rose’s claim that two Filipino users from the forums hacked the account.

Because of Heartdreamerz’ long involvement in My Immortal and the fact she never claimed to be Tara or Raven, I take a lot of trust in her word.

Heartdreamerz linked the FF.net profile of the original hacker: Coruscate Corruption.

Looking up “Coruscate Corruption” had me come across this from the Live journal fan club, which implies that there were two hackers.

On December 8th 2006, Mwamba replied, “Tara’s was just pure luck. It didn’t take long to get. The password was tara. snorts Post’s was just guessing too, but I remembered when his passy was cracked on here, so I tried out the same password. It worked. Oh yeah, and I wrote a fanfic for Post, it’s a rip off of Tara’s story, but meh.”

The last two posts were made on January 14th, 2007. The second post wrote, "It was me. I had complete control for two days. And then EarnestInBerlin had to hack in too and change the password. But then she told what it was and then the real Tara had to come back and rechange her passy so nobody could get in. But that’s old news. That account is most certainly not mine. I could not continue that fic for 39 chapters, I’d get bored after the first fifteen.”

The third post wrote, “ Shrug It doesn’t matter. Call me whatever. Though if I have to pick, I suppose you can call me by my FF.net name, Coruscate Corruption. What book category are you writing this fic in? Just curious.” End description.]

You may be asking, “Rose Christo? The woman who lied about her family, being Native American, and writing My Immortal to sell a book?” Yes, that Rose Christo. Yes, she was a fraud and a scammer, but she peppered in some little-known true details to make her claim seem more legit. For instance, she talked about a Voldemort rper in the reviews, and that ended up being true. You can actually find this Voldemort reviewer in the web archives of Raven’s stories. (Apparently, that Voldemort even came out and said “hey, that’s me!” Cannot find it unfortunately.)

Keep in mind the only way I found any of this was because Rose Christo made that claim. Without it, Heartdreamerz wouldn’t have made that post that led to Coruscate Corruption and those posts on Bartiforums. It’s possible Rose somehow came across the same information I did, but it’s more likely she was there. Rose Christo may not be the author of My Immortal, but it was likely she was a spectator as it all went down. (As I was a spectator for Rose’s ordeal when it all went down.)

Since it was said the hackers posted on the fanfiction forums, I sought to find it by searching “Tara”, “My Immortal”, etc. on FFnet’s search. The posts are unfortunately long gone, but there is a surviving forum called “My Immortal Forum Tara Gilesbie is a genius!”

TL;DR: Multiple, separate people made consistent claims over the span of years. Because of this, I personally believe Tara’s account was legitimately hacked. Since this is at odds at Todd/Toby in his authorship claim saying the hacking was faked by him, he is likely lying about being the author.

 Since it was said the hackers posted on the fanfiction forums, I sought to find it by searching “Tara”, “My Immortal”, etc. on FFnet’s search. The posts are unfortunately long gone, but there is a surviving forum called “My Immortal Forum Tara Gilesbie is a genius!”

TL;DR: Multiple, separate people made consistent claims over the span of years. Because of this, I personally believe Tara’s account was legitimately hacked.

Introduction

This blog’s purpose is to compile some facts about My Immortal. Hopefully it will be helpful.

The (now deleted) initial post wasn’t showing up in the tags, so maybe I have to post first to make it work?

This blog will contain posts of a basic timeline, why I believe chapter 39 was from a real hacker, Tara’s supposed IMDb, and possibly more. In order to get things to actually show up, the sources will be added as a reblog after each post.
