Erden gritted his jaw as he watched the pathetic excuse for a match. He didn't like betting on newbies; it was always too much of a risk, although sometimes risks pay off.

It was interesting at first, watching the new recruits taunt each other into a duel of physical entanglement, but all too soon, someone was getting the breath kicked out of them, and it was downhill from there. Sloppy, uncoordinated blows from both parties. Erden buried his face in his hands, groaning - he fucked up.

He peeked up when the stench of blood coated the air, a sure sign that the brunette had finally gotten lucky with one of his punches, but his strike wasn't as heavy as he had planned. Erden cursed under his breath as he watched the blonde bounce on his heels, quickly stuttering back before the brunette could have an opportunity.

The brunette had the advantage in almost every physical way - which is why Erden had put his money on him - but it seemed the younger boy was swiffer, lighter on his feet, and had the ability to think quicker. The blonde extended a leg, kicking the larger man's feet out from under him, his big body falling to the mat with a thud.

This was really going to cost him. The realization sunk in, intensifying his already foul mood.

Haleth and Muriel walked hand in hand through the marketplace, stopping at their favorite vendors, which included a magical tea stand, a book peddler, and of course, a bakery. While they browsed, Haleth checked to see if anyone was looking before she reached up and twirled one of Muriel's tassels between her fingers. He stopped to give her the attention he thought she was seeking, but she simply backed off and pretended to be more interested in the vendor’s wares.

This kind of behavior continued at every stand. By the time they were trying out the new banana pudding filling, Haleth once again made sure they were alone before offering up a sample for Muriel to try off her finger. He looked suspiciously from the filling and back up at her innocent expression.

“You just want me to taste?” He asked with an arch of his brow.

Haleth shook her head. “Oh no. I wasn’t asking you to taste.” She stuck her finger in her mouth and winked playfully as she slowly sucked it clean. “I just wanted to get your attention. That’s all.”

Mika's fists clenched against the armrests, her jaw set in a tight line. It felt as if someone had knocked all the air out of her lungs.

The newcomer, like the men on either side of her, wore a crisp black-and-white three-piece suit. He removed his shoes before stepping onto the tatami-lined floor of the inner house, revealing tasteful dark grey socks. Jet-black shades perched on his head, brushing back dark wisps of hair off his face – his stupid fucking face.

Neither of them wore the traditional kimono or shiromuku, yet for some reason, she couldn't shake the feeling of being at a wedding.

Mika felt her face heat up, her clenched hands trembling slightly. She straightened up, taking a deep breath to compose herself, the mask of indifference rolling over her features from years of practice.

It was not the first time Mika had witnessed this – after all, it was just sakazuki. A sakazuki that was not hers.

Burning. That was the first thing Erden felt: a raging, aching, white-hot burn underneath his skin that he desperately wanted to claw at until it stopped.

Blood. Sweat. Vomit. Urine. Those were the first things he smelled, in that order. They always were. He had no idea which part of him was bleeding, but he could feel the sweat cooling on his body, making the burn feel even worse. The faint smell of urine told him he had pissed himself yet again mid-transformation, but that hardly mattered. Neither did the sick coating his mouth, throat, and chest.

Whimpering. That was the first thing he heard: his own feeble whimpers caused by the aftershock of the transformation because he couldn't manage screaming or crying any longer. His voice was of no use, and he could only sniff his tears back as best he could.

Dirt mingled with blood. That was the first thing he saw when he pried his eyes open. His blood, from unknown wounds caused by the beast that lingered slightly below his surface, sated from what had evidently been an energetic night of taking grief out on his body.
