It is So hard to be ok with my writing or other art being bad. I know its ok! I shouldn't be worried about what other people think! And I'm not too bothered if strangers think its bad. But what if my friends do?

does anyone else remember that reality TV show from like early to mid 00's that was a group of people put into a warehouse for a couple months and it was made to be like a post-apocalypse setting?

just remembered a fic on AO3 (or more likely LJ because it had that distinct 00's experimental vibe) that appeared double-spaced oddly, in that some paragraphs would be spaced normally and others would have double or even triple spaces in between. it was about one half of the otp getting over the other's death (or coma, can't remember which), so all the comments were about how poignant the use of visual spacing was as a means to convey all the emotional holes in the character's life.
and then the author replied like... *giggle* guys it's NOT double spaced. try selecting the whole text
and we were all like "no WAY"
but we selected the text, and yes!!!
the "holes" in the story? they were actually lines and actions from the dead/coma character's ghost, rendered invisible to the eye by the simple trick of coloring the text the exact same as the background, revealed by nothing more than a click and a drag of the mouse
a story about the profound loneliness of losing your the partner of your life and having to make do without them, without anything to fill the holes they'd left behind, suddenly became a story about the profound helplessness of seeing someone you love suffer from your absence while you are right there, unable to do anything about it, unable to communicate that you love them enough to suffer unseen and unheard with them, just to keep them company they'll never know about
it was then that I truly realized how *superior* the digital medium is to plain printed paper, how the medium and the format can add to a story.
I think about that fic about once a year. I wish I could find it again

ok now that i re-read the first Memoirs of Lady Trent i have come to the conclusion that the two human cultures featured in Book 1 (A Natural history of dragons) are sects of judaism (in a fantasy world where xianity didnt happen??? i have only read book `1 so i dont know if there is a xianity equivalent anywhere), one representing rabbinical judaism (described as developing around scholarly debate of scripture) and one representing a judaism that retained the temple (which developed a culture of maintaining temple rituals though in their own towns). Both sharing many practices and of course source material (using noisemakers to ward off evil, mourning rituals are actually still shared, the holy scriptures are the same ones) but interpreting and interacting with it in different ways
oh and the books are about a crazy lady scientist who travels the world solving mysteries about dragonkind which is the reason i picked up the books. the fantasy judaism is like. i cant say its a bonus bc its more like the main focus of the book (natural history mysteries/science/dragons) is steak and the world culture is the garlic roasted potatoes on the side.
Oh and if you dont believe me that its fantasy judaism the actual words used to describe the religious practices are not subtle in the inspiration. The rabbinical practice mentions a purim equivalent (this is extremely obvious, they use groggers to drown out the name of an evil man), and the mourning period was straight up called shiva. a character "sat shiva". OH AND THE MAIN CHARACTER HAD TO BE CLEANSED IN "LIVING WATER" AT SOME POINT AKA DIP IN A MIKVAH !!!! anyways im on book 2 its great.

there's this passage in the name of the rose where these medieval monks are discussing whether it's okay to look at illustrations of monkeys and the old guy argues that it's inherently immoral to even look at immoral things and it's like. average day on tumblr

Thinking today about a post I saw some time ago about how wearing glasses shouldn't be considered a disability because it's "socially acceptable" and also about how I haven't been able to update my prescription for 2 years because I just cannot afford an optometrist visit or new frames.
I understand the impulse to say bad vision doesn't count because glasses are such a normal part of our society we don't even think of them as a disability tool anymore, bur the fact is if something happens to my glasses, I am Fucked. I can't drive. I can barely do everyday tasks. Working is going to be impossible. Even if I scrounge the money to get new frames, I have to wait WEEKS for them to arrive. And what happens to me in that time frame? Nothing good, I can tell you that. I literally need this tool to function on a daily basis, because my vision is bad enough to seriously disrupt my life without them.
If anything, glasses are a great example of what society could be if we took MORE disability seriously. If we had actual tools so readily available and normalized you saw them everywhere. But that doesn't make me not disabled, because the minute I lose access to that tool, I can't function.
