To Nyx! The Cause and Solution to all of Life's Problems?

Nyx may be the most important character in all of Persona. No, really! Did you know that it is really an alien from outer space and is the unholy combination of Majora’s Mask’s Moon and Lavos from Chrono Trigger? That Nyx is what caused the subconscious collective to manifest, part of the reason humans evolved, that our huge wars in our history are her trying to break out, that the Night Queen the gang in Persona1 faced was an avatar/aspect of her that served as a warning, AND she also may have also killed off first life on earth (the last part is not ‘confirmed’, but as you’ll read, it might as well be. Also come on, that part sounds pretty metal, doesn’t it?). I hope I got your attention with that.

Let me take you on a journey of supplemental Persona information from the fan and club books you probably didn’t even know existed. The validity of all of this as being actual Atlus fact is hard to pinpoint at 100%. For the most part, the official club and fan books tend to supplement with additional information for the games, and they have the Atlus brand on them. I’d place them right after the games, in terms of facts. So taking this as true 100% canon is entirely up to you. I’m just sharing the information. I personally tend to consider them as near-canon unless proven otherwise. Of course, that also means most fans who aren’t Japanese are left in the dark about this information. Let’s change that! The P3 Club Book has a Q&A section at the end which provides supplemental information about the games that goes beyond character profiles. Each part is narrated by members of the game. There’s stuff about Strega, Shadows,  Persona Users, The Velvet Room…and Nyx. Nyx’s is the first part, and it’s quite interesting…

     Every waking hour of her eternity she was reminded of her seperation to the one she loved so much. Though she was a mother, she could never love her children like she loved her husband. A husband and a twin brother. A being so close to her and sharing a heart with he,r that it had never crossed her mind that they could ever be torn apart

     How foolishly naive she had been.

     Now every day she could only stare at the giant sealed door that held her away from her beloved, feel every m o v e m e n t on the other side, yet never be allowed to reach for him.

     Her place was here behind the seal, away from his claws of madness.

     Away from the tender touch on her skin

     Locked away from his spiteful words of illness

     Away from the loving poems he used to whisper to her

     Out of reach so he couldn’t dare touch her and use her powers

     Away so he couldn’t love her.

     The existance of humanity in exchange for her own happieness…

     “Yes… Yes I do.”

All too quickly does Thanatos’ expression change, shifting to a more at peace likeness. In fact, soon after does the rest of his body follow suit, a deep breath expelling any of his earlier thought. So too went with it his words, apparently, as he remains silent to her statement, instead focusing upon the hand that so lovingly runs through his hair.

It is a small action to be sure, but nonetheless one that he is pleased beyond measure to be able to receive. Given the nature of his mother’s relationship with his father, an occasion such as this was not to be squandered. It very well could be years upon years before Erebus became too exhausted to test the seal again and allow Nyx a respite from her prison.

“I wonder, yes…” He speaks up after a few moments of reveling in the quiet. “They always seemed so…. detached from their surroundings, until they were around that group of friends. To think that they all grew so close together that they were willing to sacrifice themselves to become the seal is…” He cannot even think of the correct word to use, not one that would do them justice, at any rate.

     Nyx thought back to the moment when Arisato Minato sealed her away from Erebus. It was a living memory inside her. If he had waited any longer both gods would have melted together to pure destruction and brought The Fall upon humanity. Erebus had been all to close, his claws on her throat, ready to completely meld with her, when the Childs light had seperated them, throwing Nyx into a safe place far away from her husband. 

     Truth be told she had hated him for it at first. All she wanted was to reach back to her beloved twin brother who was now unreachable to her, calling for him and trying to destroy the seal from her side, but soon she understood the truth behind it all. Her beloved brother had lost his sanity thanks to the craving of humanity. Despite his love for her Erebus had been willing to connect with her to destroy humanity. And with her solitude and time the thought of that scenario grew crueler with each moment.

     “Yes.... That Child in particular was quite hard to read. I too despised him at first. But he saw the truth and was ready for the worst punishment of it all. Sometimes I wonder if he wasn’t a Child of Eros.”

     The thought of her oldest sibling Eros was a painful one. She couldn’t even remember the last time she had seen him, the true and pure embodiment of love. Where was he now? What was he doing? Like Tartaros and Gaia they both were out of her reach, somewhere she could not call out for them. Then again she was sealed away in a tight place with no possibility to reach anyone but her own children and Erebus. Like a bird kept in a safe cage.

Ah, of course. It almost seemed cruel on his father’s part; to be so close, to speak with his mother dearest at one point, to promise of his unyielding love. Yet, in the next, to dash that all away beneath maddened bellows. Madness, that, Ryoji would quickly remind himself, is the fault of man.

For a moment ( oh but a moment ), the consideration is taken. There can be no humanity-driven madness in desire to afflict Erebus if no humans remain. And who is better to make it happen than He who guides Mankind to their Death anyway? Of course, it would be a grievous misuse of his power, and a direct offense of the highest degree to Zeus, but it pains him to see his mother and father alike in pain.

Of course, that thought is quickly dashed ( far too unreasonable of course ), and instead, his eyes fall closed. As Death often does, he fades from the sight of mortals of his own volition, not that many noticed him to begin with. With the steps that he takes, his surroundings blur before him. It stands as a mess of colors for a good while until they condense once more,

No longer does he stand among crowds in Port Island; nay he looks upon the grand, golden gate that seals one half of his family from the other. And, how convenient it is, that he stands upon the more sane side of the gate.

“Mother.” His eyes open once more, imploringly seeking out her figure. “Do not believe that I would rather spend my time among mortals when my own mother agonizes on her own. I have one parent driven to madness, I will not stand by as the other descends into it on account of loneliness.”

     She felt his arrival the moment he started to dematerialize on earth, a soft gasp escaping her as she stood up from her seat and went several steps towards the seal where she expected her son to take form again. But it seemed as if she wasn’t the only one that felt his presence.

     A heavy shaking went through the room as Erebus felt his son behind the seal, trying to losen it, crying for Nyx and Thanatos both. It was ripping her soul apart. She made her steps towards the almost human figure and wrapped her arms around him, as if to shield the boy from the craze of his father. Another deep shaking rattled her realm as her grip grew tighter, body almost shaking itself.

     “Thanatos... You should not have to endure this as well.” She murmured into his ear relaxing a bit as the shaking seemed to stop. For now Erebus had given up on the seal, or maybe his sanity had slowly come back. Whatever it was, a small portion of peace was coming back now. And yet, Nyx didn’t let go of her son.

     “I am so sorry you had to experience this, Thanatos... or would you rather be called Ryoji?”

He provides her with a dark roast, as black as the night itself, with a small jug of milk and some sugar cubes to add at her discretion… 

     “It’s home to me.” She says, examining the cup before giving it a sniff. This definitely had a unique smell to it. All she knew of this liquid was that some humans praised it as almost holy, a sacred beverage that was akin to do miracles. A little sip explained it all. It was a strong and unique taste, almost jarring her awake with a single sip of it. The soft sweet aftertaste and creamy overlay made it an incredible experience.

     “So this is coffee.... At least now I understand all the commotion around it.”

     “I was joking! Please don’t leave!” Nyx has been lonely for far too long. “But in case I do overstep my boundaries, please know that it’s not intentionaly to hurt you. I sometimes forget myself in my-.... role as a mother.”

     Okay Milk was familiar, but sugar? “Well-... do as you see fit.” She just answered, fidgeting slightly before she set down at the counter, looking around. “It is very comfortable here. Not too light and blinding, almost like the moment when the sun is dying down.”
