How I make spellcandles

I was making a spell candle for the Imbolc ritual I’m hosting for the coven tomorrow and figured: why not turn it into a little tutorial? So here is my version of the spell candles!

What you need: (note: I made a candle for creativity and inspiration, so everything matches that goal. Change herbs, colours and stones to match any goal you want/need!)

🕯 a base candle, either white or a colour that works for your goal

🕯 through-and-though coloured candles for dripping in colours that match your goal. I usually use two or three, in this case yellow for happiness and inspiration and orange for creativity

🕯 herbs, I used basil (creativity), rose (passion/motivation), mistletoe (fertility for ideas) and mugwort (creativity)

🕯 small stone chips, I used aventurine, citrine and burnt amethyst (all for creativity)

🕯 oils, I used jasmine (creativity)

🕯 ribbon and charm (optional, but pretty!)

🕯 baking paper to protect your work surface

Start with carving some words or symbols into the candle. Today I used a bindrune for creativity, the runes kenaz (inner fire), wunjo (happiness) and gebo (gift).

Now drip the first colour. Make sure to first go around the edges for the pretty drips and then fill in the top.

Next are the herbs, stones and oil. Simply sprinkle them on top and arrange the bigger pieces so they are spread out a bit. Press the stones gently down into the still soft wax for sturdyness.

Drip the last colour, making sure to set but not drown the herbs, and tadaa! One pretty spellcandle! But wait, there’s more!

Tie the ribbon around the candle with one knot.

Slide on your charm and knot again, fitting it snuggly against the candle.

Make a pretty bow and trim the ends,and you’re done!

Burn it during your spell (note: remove the ribbon before it catches and reuse it!), place it on your altar or even make them to give away as gifts!

Get a crystal keychain to carry around with your house keys

Hang a tiger’s eye from your rear view mirror

Light a candle and set an intention (even if that intention is just to get through the day, or to be thankful, or to get something done, or to relax)

Tidy up a room

Go for a walk

Make a cup of tea or coffee and stir an intention into it (clockwise to summon something, counterclockwise to banish it)

Put out an offering for the fae (honey, nuts, and berries is a favorite of mine)

Open a window

Do a one- or three-card personal tarot spread

Take a bath (it’s really easy to light some candles and include a spell bomb or bath salts and make it a spell or ritual bath!)

Hang wind chimes outside your home

Meditate

Water your plants

Research a new herb or crystal

Hold your hands under cold running water, close your eyes, and connect with the water for a moment (it’s also easy to do this outside in the dirt for earth, or to put your hand outside your car window for air)

Love on your pets

Listen to music that makes you feel witchy (Stevie Nicks is a favorite of mine)

The Triumphal Dance Of Pallas Athena, by Carlo Sarrabezolles (1925, Paris)

This life-size sculpture depicts Athena (also known as Pallas Athene) in a triumphal dance. She is shown in a long garment called “peplos” and a helmet that bears the head of Erichthonius (who was raised by Athena). In her left hand, she holds a shield. This resin statue is a reproduction of the original statue and is located in the Trocadero Gardens at Warsaw Place. The statue was installed in the gardens in 1988. A plaque on the statue’s base reads: La Danse Triomphale A Pallas Athene Par Qui Les Dieux vainquirent les Geants. A l'intelligence dominatrice de la matiere.

Translated to English, this means: “The Athena Pallas to which the gods defeated the giants. A domineering matter.” Essentially, this inscription simply means that intelligence is more important than strength. Intelligence representing Athena and matter representing giants.

Could you recommend any books on sea witchcraft?

Sure thing! I try to get my hands on as much reading material as I can having to do with the topic (or anything having to do with sea-related superstitions) because I believe inspiration can be found from any book. And lets be real, if you’re practicing sea-witchcraft in todays age then you are likely not following any heritable tradition, which means you can do the eclectic pagan thing and just pick and choose from things you like OR you can say “hell naw” and just use things for inspiration and build your own craft around it.

That being said, there is no one definitive book for sea-witches to abide by. There are actually not that many in circulation, so if you are a student it helps to have access to academic journals where you can search for topics of interest. Honestly, anthropologic and scholarly books on folklore read like grimoires half the time anyway. 

So here is what I recommend: (all from memory so bear with me)

Traditional witchcraft for the Sea-Shore (Melusine D.) the best place to start in my opinion. It gives the reader a good feel for natural and intuitive magic that ultimately becomes a cornerstone for this practice.

Sea Magic (Sandra K) Reads like a new-age spell book, but its also surprisingly comprehensive as its own system of magic. Tends to re-hash some common tropes in western witchcraft however, such as the incessant need for divination and familiars.

Weather Wisdom (Albert L) Actually a scholarly book about superstitions. I picked it up at a flea market and its actually been incredibly helpful in developing a few rain-based rituals. I only recommend this if you’re interested in weather branches of sea-witchcraft.

Wisdom of Water (John A) The dude who wrote this book is an asshole and biggot. He thinks science is a lie. But that aside, he does do his homework. He creates a surprisingly deep look at various water-related deities and spirits across many cultures, and even manages to pull up some information that I had to translate from old texts to verify. He actually knows what he’s talking about. But he’s still an ass. 

Mermaid Magic (Lucy C) New age kinda book, but ultimately great for inspiration if you plan on working with any merfolk myths/archetypes/spirits. I wouldn’t buy this book expecting anything earth shattering from it directly, but it does bring up some good chains of thought if your looking to get into a more mer-friendly mindset. 

These are just the books that have stuck with me personally. I know each sea-witch will have their own preferences however. Happy studying!
