‎ ‎ ⋆⠀⠀&.⠀⠀٬⠀⠀(⠀⠀ARSENIC.⠀⠀)⠀...⠀is the first full album (lp) by south korean girl group, letalis. the album was released in both digital and physical form by south korean entertainment company, apricus culture on october 29, 2014.

the album was supported by performances of the title track, "POISON" and two additional promotional singles, "FOR THE THRILL" and "CHECK IT". as the group's first full-length album, ARSENIC received mixed reviews despite its overwhelming commercial success. the group promoted the album for a total of five weeks through music show performances, two seoul concerts, five fanmeetings, and several variety show appearances. the album's title track, "POISON" received a total of 8 music show wins while "CHECK IT" amassed 2 towards the later end of promotions.

despite the album's popularity, critics published mostly lukewarm reviews of the album. most prominently, a common critique was the "repetitive" sentiment shared by critics in both korea and abroad. despite critical favorites "REBOUND", "CHECK IT", "LOVE/OR", and "BAD GIRL" receiving praise for the involvement of contributing members naryun, jiseo, and melanie, other songs were heavily criticized for their recurring themes, genres, and structure. regardless, the group's fanbase would propel the album and its promotional singles onto the gaon and billboard global charts, solidifying the "bread and butter" of letalis' musical character.

‎ ‎ ⋆⠀⠀&.⠀⠀٬⠀⠀two versions of arsenic were available for purchase upon initial release. the group would go on to record the entire album in japanese for a limited edition special release in 2015 as part of their debut anniversary celebration.

sticking to the general idea of their previous era, the members each had a personal hand in their own looks. each stage built off the individual tastes of each member while holding on to their cohesiveness. easily one of their most identifiable eras solely off the styling.

ㅤ*ㅤSECTION FOURㅤ:ㅤthe notes.

a fan favorite era

one of their more iconic albums, def a top three vitalis staple album

people either loved or hated this era (including the girls themselves). there were a lot of mixed reviews among critics and it wasn't secret to the girls.

weird animosity between emmy and juniper starts here. no one really knows why but they were regularly exchanging not-so nice words about each other to anyone who cared enough to listen.

one of their encore stages went viral after they used voice changing microphones with shuffled effects (entirely emmy's idea). still one of the highest viewed encores of all time, a letalis fandom staple video as well. several members were in tears from laughter (emmy, jiseo, naryun) while others were completely stoic (naira, juniper). ironically, this video pretty much sums up their public dymanic pretty well.

lots of controversy surrounding the tracks on the album. towards the end of the promotional period, the girls were visibly tired of performing "for the thrill" which was unanimously voted in a fan poll posted to melanie's fancafe as being the fans' least favorite b-side off the album.

despite how well the title track, "poison" did, some of the girls voiced their varying opinions on what they would chosen instead. snowballed into a weird scandal where they were accused of suffering from "celebrity disease". never ended up being addressed but apricus did tighten the reigns on what the girls were allowed to say/bring up during the rest of the promotions.

the true beginning of the core writers and producers that usually appear on letalis albums. also the beginning of the naryun and trenton rumors (that would eventually be entirely true). it wasn't lost on the public that letalis was gonna stick to what works so these same writers and producers in different arrangement are a staple to their discography.

miss. me randomly went viral in 2020 around the time challenges became a regular occurrence. so in between the challenges for the album they were promoting at the time, they were suffering through doing cute little hand choreo for the song.

naryun, melanie, and emmy gained their first credits on this album!

announced their first asian tour after the end of promotions. cute little 15-show tour, mostly in large theaters and arenas, nothing crazy but a precious memory for all the girls.

Even though Letalis had come to be associated with the color red and all its varying shades of blood, lust, vengeance, and seduction, Juniper had always seen it as black.

Trained by the best, made to be the best, and they were: the best.

Distinct.

They had their concept—and it was theirs. None came close to their precision nor their handiwork. Every comeback was a building block laid on top of the precedent set by the previous. Somehow, over eleven years they continued to be just that: precise.

But required a certain level of maintenance to retain all the qualities that made them so.

Juniper hated being the leader. Most days, she resented Naira for her pleas and cries to Karin to pass over her. Every day, she resented herself for being so obsessed with the idea of debuting that she gave in to Karin’s sordid terms. 

Leader, or no debut.

It was simple, like her favorite color, and the familiarity of the role kept her blind to the prices she would eventually pay for her shallow hunger for fame and recognition.

Despite his youth, Sanghun held an air of solemnity that worried Juniper. He had warned her of the pitfalls of his depression and how it had only been stretched to its limits after his debut.

According to the Seoul Gangnam Police, soloist Ophion has passed away.

The representative for the police station reports that on March 7 at approximately 1:47 a.m. KST, a resident living within the apartment building called the police to request a wellness check on their neighbor.

According to the woman in her early 30s, her next door neighbor had not placed his trash bag outside of his door that night, nor had she seen him enter or exit the building for several days. She reported the behavior as being suspicious claiming that he never broke his routines.

After being instructed to knock on his door, she reported to the dispatcher that there was no response. She added that there was a suspicious noise on the other side of the door that caused her alarm. Police were dispatched to the scene less than 30 minutes later where they were able to obtain access to the apartment.

The man, found unresponsive in his home, was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead in surgery hours later. Later that morning, police confirmed the man's identity after obtaining permission from his family.

An official joint statement released by Apricus Culture in collaboration with the Soul Gangnam Police stated, "It appears that Yang Sanghun [more commonly known by his stage name, Ophion] has passed away. Although it is clear that Sanghun took his own life, we are still searching for a suicide note."

The agency also requested privacy for the singer's family members.

Prior to his passing away, Ophion was scheduled to release his tenth full length album, MASQ, in April. Although an official release date had not yet been confirmed by Apricus Culture, a representative for the soloist confirmed the album will be released posthumously on its planned date. Proceeds from the album and any remaining merchandise in stock will be donated to a charity of the family's choice.

naira is a norweigian singer and actress born to norweigian investment banker, jesper christiansen and his wife, former miss universe, dauenphen prempree on december 2, 1993. naira was raised alongside her older brother, lukas, between her parents' two native countries. though most of her schooling took place at the top private schools in oslo, naira has publicly acknowledged chiang mai, thailand as her true hometown.

hailing from a very well-off family, naira was forced to grow up quicker than most. notably, the others often voice their irritation with naira's composure as it is quite unclear what she thinks or feels at any given moment. this trait is attributed to her mother who suffered through years of racial abuse at the hands of the european media without the defense of her husband or his family.

naira's interest in music never truly took off until she was in high school. after coming across a video of apricus culture soloist allison nam in 2008, naira grew fond of the korean music industry, secretly convincing her older brother to take her to auditions while in chaing mai. after being accepted into several companies, naira decided to join gemini entertainment's trainee program in 2010, hoping later to be matched with apricus.

after training for three years, naira was the fifth member chosen for letalis' final lineup. despite being offered the leader position, naira turned it down claiming, "she wasn't ready to be tied to the group's reputation." currently, naira is a SUB VOCALIST and official VISUAL of the group, occasionally taking part in thai and norweigian-language melodramas and soap operas under her birth name.

melanie is an australian singer-songwriter born in brisbane on june 12, 1994. her parents, jason and marissa, are working-class korean-australians who raised melanie and her older sister, madison, quite comfortably along the australian west coast. melanie is very close to her family who all frequently appear on her social media and are always acknowledged in her album dedications.

the two bae sisters found a love for performing quite early on with melanie following in her sister's footsteps participating in dance competitions across the country. though madison would give up dance to pursue a fashion design degree in europe after graduating from high school in 2008, melanie would continue to work towards what she planned to be a professional career in dance.

while at a mall with friends, melanie would be approached by an apricus culture talent scout who persuaded her to audition for the company in july of 2010. during her time as a trainee, melanie would be given several opportunities to stir up attention for the company's planned girl group. after being featured on a title track for soloist, lastdraw, in 2013, apricus would announce melanie as the central member of their upcoming girl group, letalis.

"none of us are," she deadpans, receiving lighthearted chuckles from the others. "we've been working together for ten years? we can't lie to each other anymore."

"crying," naira scoffs at the end of the question. naryun and emmy exchange a look as jiseo takes lead.

"i usually build it up before it all comes out." emmy explains, her hands gesturing tears down her face with a forced pout. "and then it doesn't stop coming out." melanie adds, gaining laughs from the other girls.

the girls all hesitate before juniper sucks in a breath, deciding to answer first. "i guess i don't like being super vulnerable with other people?" emmy opens her mouth to speak up, closing it before a word gets out.

"i don't like being powerless, feels weird," melanie adds, shrugging. hums of agreement come from naira and jiseo.

"this is kinda weird, but... being unprepared?" heri speaks up quietly. her eyes don't leave the floor as she hides behind her hair. naryun reaches out to comfort the group's youngest as she speaks up.

"i try my best to keep my life compartmentalized. like, my work life is separate from my personal life... keeps things manageable. kind of what heri means."

jiseo perks up at the second, a small smile lighting up her face in thought. "my favorite childhood item is a beat up hannah montana cd player from like... 2008? i had my parents ship it to me when i got my own place in korea!" she laughs, accentuating the syllables of the latter half of the sentence.

"it doesn't even work anymore," she giggles, "but it reminds me of how much i used to love music— how i used to beg my parents to buy me albums, take me to concerts, get music lessons. i miss that."

she sighs as she contemplates the last part of the question. "i'd probably be okay without it, it's more the memory than the physical thing, you know?"

"honestly, my biggest wish isn't too crazy... i don't think." she shifts in her seat. "i just wanna be autonomous. do what i want, when i want, with whoever. i don't wanna have to worry about money, or health, or other things like that."

"i don't think i have a temper, to be honest." she shrugs her shoulders casually. "it takes a lot to get me angry. and even then, i'm not mels or naira." she laughs at that, a belly laugh escaping her as she throws her head back.
