I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

I made a quick little thing with the subtle differences between Mustang’s designs in the main 3 adaptations/media of Fullmetal Alchemist.

Of course since everything is hand drawn these points might be a bit mixed up between all the versions. It has more to do with how I perceive them in general than anything else.  I talk about hands and nips without pics but yes, you know what I’m referring to. Brotherhood Mustang also has pretty hands.  Add your own observations! There’s quite a few differences in his uniform too. 

#oooh interesting study #I find funny that both anime try to make him into a pretty boy #when the manga he has a huuuh more realistic? maybe thats not the way to say it #but the way he is rougher makes him look more like his age while still comming off as particularly 'pretty' #idunno if this makes sense lol #Mustang is meant to be attractive and while the animes go more with the youthful appeal #Manga Mustang is more attractive in the way he clearly has a full adult body while also 'not showing his age' #(his age is 29 so he isn't particularly old neither way LOL but I think the point stands) #(specially in anime and shonen where the standard goes more towards teens)

thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.
