As if "swallowed by the earth" is a way to describe someone who's gone missing without a trace, particularly in the woods, but in Ditovo it may be more than just a saying. At least if you believe the many legends and folktales about giant plumsaina, or as they're more commonly known "earth belly". The plant does exist but usually it is only big enough to catch small vertebrates, which it does when prey step onto its camouflaged trap door and fall into the pit of the plant filled with digestive liquid and downward pointing spikes preventing escape. The roots of the plant are for storing nutrients and other substances, as well as firmly anchoring the plant in the ground when prey is thrashing about inside it. In order to reproduce the earth belly sprouts a red flower above the surface, a red flag that may perhaps save the life of one who recognizes it.

Roddacember Day 3: Favorite Monster

"While the Vraal is far from the most famous of Deltora's many non-human species, its hold on the public imagination--as a kind of bogeyman--has remained strong over the years. References to the Vraal can be found in books, movies, and even nursery rhymes made long after the species went extinct. In fact, a little over a year before this entry was recorded, a ghastly film called 'Vraalpocalypse' was released, in which the hero--a plucky young gnome armed with a chainsaw--was tasked with saving Dread City from an army of genetically-engineered 'super Vraals'.

Super Vraals nonwithstanding, fans of 'Vraalpocalypse' may find themselves disappointed by the reality of the creatures featured in the film. While the real-life Vraals were doubtlessly terrifying to face, years of targeted interbreeding (to increase their fighting power) left the species stunted and mutated, making them sickly and surprisingly delicate.

For example, while Vraal possessed rapid metabolisms (with appetites to match) they were capable of digesting surprisingly little of what they consumed. Analysis of Vraal remains found in New Pirra and northern Deltora have revealed that the creatures lacked many basic digestive enzymes, and some were even born without a functioning pancreas. This meant that almost none of what a Vraal consumed could actually sustain it; a Vraal would have to devour nearly four times what another predator of its size would typically eat in order to feel satisfied. While that doubtlessly made the Vraal a more terrifying enemy in the Shadow Arena--where food could always be procured for it eventually--it proved a fatal liability in the wild. Indeed, many reports in the years following Lord Malverlain's defeat and the annexation of the Shadowlands detail Vraals, starving, pathetic, and weak, wandering the mountains in desperate search of food as their skin clung to their bones. The image conjured is less of a terrifying predator and more of another victim of the Shadow Lord's mad experimentation.

A related point, of course, is the Vraal's infamous weakness to poison. All living beings may find themselves falling ill if they ingest the wrong mushroom or drink from the wrong spring, but Vraal would become catastrophically sick if exposed to such human vices as ethanol and capsaicin. The hero of 'Vraalpocalypse' didn't need a chainsaw to save Dread City--a bottle of Broomian wine and a plate of Jalad City fish tacos would have done the job just as well."

Roddacember 2023 - 8: Relationship of any kind

Doom & Jasmine - "not an ordinary father", "no ordinary daughter"

Doom and Jasmine's relationship is certainly a complex and interesting one, which makes sense given their unusual circumstances. Their relationship doesn't necessarily come across as very close-knit and outwardly affectionate (which makes sense considering they are both quite solitary individuals and have spent much time on their own, and apart from each other), but it is clear that they do respect each other and care about each other in their own way.

The moment in which Doom remembers and they officially reunite as father and daughter is certainly the most touching and emotional moment between them 🥺🥺:

Jasmine certainly takes after Doom in many ways - independent, stubborn, smart, brave, a survivor, not so easily trusting of others, and at times hot-headed. And she isn't ashamed to admit it.

She's also willing to have a dig at him, given the opportunity.

And, my absolute favourite moment of theirs, while everyone else is horrified when Jasmine admits she considered her own father a potential guardian of the south suspect, Doom is impressed and proud, proud of her objective thinking in the situation, and proud of the fact that the two of them think so alike, that his daughter takes after him.

This whole moment, complete with Doom's grin of fatherly pride and approval and Jasmine's heartfelt smile in return, while everyone else is shaking their heads in disbelief, is really the epitome of what their relationship is — others don't necessarily understand it, but Doom and Jasmine do, and that's all that matters. So much of it goes unspoken, but it is there. Jasmine seems to know Doom loves and cares about her in his way, and Doom seems to know she loves and respects him. It goes without saying. Their relationship may be different from the norm, but as were their circumstances, and the people they became because of it. For Jasmine, there is no going back to being a little girl, relying on her father. For Doom, there is no going back to raising his daughter, seeing her grow up, getting back that time lost and seeing her become the person she is. All they have is each other now, after everything they've been through. And they're satisfied with that. Jasmine has no issue with having "not an ordinary father", and Doom is proud and "happy" that Jasmine is "no ordinary daughter." And I think that's beautiful.

What I've come up with are three levels of abstraction that (hopefully) serve as different levels of difficulty. The first week-ish draws more from 2019's style, and the last couple weeks are the more recent style, with the middle being a segue between them. (i kinda struggled to make questions, but you're welcome to use the prompts as keywords for your own!)

ooh yes! maybe it applies to everyone who lives in the palace?

Much of their time was spent learning the Rule — the thousands of laws and customs by which the royal family lived. The Rule governed their lives. They sat — Endon patiently and Jarred not so patiently — while their long hair was plaited and twined with golden cord, according to the Rule. They spent hours learning to hammer red-hot metal into swords and shields. The first king of Deltora had been a blacksmith and it was part of the Rule that his art should be continued.

Interesting how it's the Rule and not the Rules, despite it being made up of many. We know the Rule was made to control the royal family, but I wonder how many rules it actually contains--thousands apparently, but I would love to know what they are! We know it dictates how the Belt is used, that they can't interact with people in the city, how royalty (and their peers?) must present, and who they can marry, but as far as I can remember, that's all we're told? And interesting that the Rule allows for a prince to bring a commoner up to such a high station that the Rule also applies to him.
