❛ So, Dolores— can I call you Dolly? ❜

He’s folding his straw wrapper into a ball as he speaks, gaze directed at the woman across from him. This is the best part about going to restaurants, the moment between ordering your food and actually getting it, because you can learn a lot about a person in that (hopefully) short span of time — how patient they are, how they cope with limited stimuli, whether or not they’re respectful to waitstaff, all important things to know about the person you just saved from possible video game brainwashing, and in this case, all while in the comfort of a neat little booth!

“ Yes you can, Tony, ” Lo’s response was nonchalant, although there were undertones of that same childish defiance she had kept from her childhood. The very reason men like Humbert and Quilty called her a tease. She’d never meant to be a tease. That’s just the way she was— ill-mannered and obnoxious, the natural result of teenage rebellion and an overwhelming mother. Well, that was cut short. Now she was just Dolores, the bored twenty-something-year-old who went out for a game of Space Invaders on her own (which was sad when she thought about it). At least Anthony had saved her from the solitude, which was worth something, she guessed. At least worth more than the cents she would have spent on the new video game machines. The promise of food and company had somewhat motivated her and somewhere deep down she was happy about that.

“ I’m always passin’ through, ” the reply was meant to be simple. Flat. But instead she decided to keep going, “ I mean, I’m originally from Cincinnati, but I never stayed put. Been going all over the place growing up. How about you? ” Dolly was glad to swerve the conversation the other way around, she didn’t want to mention or even think about her past. “ Been here long? ”
