Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Yes, that's precisely the point. The 'expectations'. But Moffat, Gatiss and others don't owe anything to anybody's expectations. They do what they want to do, and they couldn't care less for people's expectations. Moffat and Gatiss said that themselves: We did 'Sherlock' for ourselves, not for the audience, and if audience doesn't like it - well, everybody knows how to switch off the TV. Did they do it perfectly? No, of course not. And people are free to criticise them for that. But to accuse them of not meeting the expectations of creating a female character who is 'interesting on her own' - well, not everybody has the same expectations.
I've finally just read A Scandal in Bohemia. Wow, all these men who depicted Irene Adler as Sherlock Holmes' love interest did it only because she was a woman, right?
I mean, why else would that be? In the book they don't even get introduced properly?! The only scenes they interact in is when they're in disguise. When Sherlock first "meets" her in disguise and is asked to be a witness to her secret marriage with this Norton guy she's in love with. Then he's disguised as an ecclasiast and fakes a fire in her house to see where she hid the photograph. Then she disguises as a man to tell him "Goodnight, Mr Sherlock Holmes." Finally, at the end she writes Sherlock a letter to explain how she suspected that the eclesiast was a disguise, and how she herself disguised as a man to boldly tell him hello in the street. That's literally it.
Irene Adler isn't in love with Sherlock or even attracted to him, she doesn't even know him at all which is just... Fine! She's just this one person who tricked him, and Sherlock admires her profoundly for that because there aren't many people in th world who can say that.
That said I think Sherlock might have had a little crush on her. A tiny little one. First he says "she was a lovely woman, with a face that a man might die for", then he asks for her photograph to the king of Bohemia. It wasn't just about keeping a souvenir of this case because he could have just accepted the king's ring. The man wanted to be able to look at Irene's face whenever he wanted lol And he was very much impressed with her. Called her "The woman" as a sign of respect and admiration. And he stopped talking shit about women after this adventure too... So she also helped him improve 👌
And to tell the truth, I have less trouble believing that this Sherlock had a tiny crush on this Irene, than in believing that Moffat's Sherlock fell in love with Moffat's Irene. Irene, in the books doesn't backstab Sherlock. She doesn't backstab anyone, actually! She's not remotely a bad person like she is in the show or certain movies where she collaborates with Moriarty: the king of Bohemia thought he could throw her out like trash when he decided to get married, she felt that it would happen so she took measures to protect herself like she was entitled to. The woman just wanted to have a nice life with the man she loved and the assurance that her ex powerful lover would leave her alone. Period. Sherlock had all the reasons to respect and admire her. And have a teenage crush on her.
Oh, and book Irene was badass enough, too. Why couldn't it be enough? If the idea was that it wasn't feminist enough to have her get married to Norton, then don't get her married! Honestly the man's useless anyway. He's just there to prove that Irene isn't in love with the King of Bohemia anymore and has no intention of ruining his life as long as he doesn't ruin hers. And how is it not feminist for a female character to be in love with a man and get married anyway? It's definitely not more feminist to force her into a half baked romance with Sherlock, imho.

Sorry, but again I can't understand what's the problem here, and what these 'awful men' did wrong again. Yes, the ACD Irene was not in love with Sherlock, and there are at least two interpretations which follow the original story minutely (the 'Granada' and the Soviet ones), but why can't others depict it differently? Personally I am not a fan of Adlock, and I think that 'A Scandal in Belgravia' is a very poor episode of 'Sherlock', but I do write fics about Sherlock and Irene, because I kind of... like it? Because, as you admit it in your post, it is not difficult to believe that in Doyle's story Sherlock has a little crush on her? So why not to develop it? Is it a misogyny to ship them, only because the original story didn't have such a romance? In that case - as you know, I ship Mollcroft and Euriarty, so does it mean that in depicting Molly and Eurus as Mycroft's and Moriarty's love interests respectively I am following the path of 'all these men', since there is no clear mention of a romance in the latter case and it is completely absent in the former?
I've finally just read A Scandal in Bohemia. Wow, all these men who depicted Irene Adler as Sherlock Holmes' love interest did it only because she was a woman, right?

I'm Just Jim - Moriarty/Eurus
Yes, I’m not a fan of this interpretation of Moriarty, but Euriarty is one of my favourite pairings of ‘Sherlock’, and I really wanted to make a video with this song ;)

Two years ago, in January 2022, at the fifth anniversary of 'The Final Problem', I told my mother: "You know, it's sad that I have no one to discuss this episode with. Nobody around me likes it as much as I do, and I feel a bit lonely".
And then Indica Watson, who played little Eurus, shared a post on Twitter with pictures from 'The Final Problem' and wrote: "The last episode of 'Sherlock' (so far)". I retweeted it and wrote: "The best episode of 'Sherlock' (so far)", and she liked my post. And I thought to myself: "Well, my prayer was granted".
