The Visitor

Andrew is a young prominent adventurous boy who’s wanted to explore every inch of the world. He was born and raised in the city. He grew up in a silver spoon and he was spoiled with everything that he wanted in life. Nothing of him was new, except for the things he didn’t see growing up. Everything he wanted to know were suddenly come to its way. Year ago, he traverses the remote village of Suyo, a place where people are not common. There are hearsays that people are being wild if they don’t be respected. Upon traveling, their maid called him and said that her mother died so he rushed home to see her mother who passed away. Things are different than before; Andrew’s life became more just miserable. His mom is everything to him, so when he lost his mom, he then became different.

Several months have passed, he then asked himself the things that he wanted in life. He tried to be different but sadly, he cannot make amends for himself. Their house that once became his safe place for almost 20 years became different. He felt heavy every time that he looked at the structure of their house. Tears come streaming down his face when he realized that growing up having everything was too different when you lose the person he wanted to be with for the rest of his life. He didn’t saw his father since he was born. One lonely night, he was sleeping then he dreamt traveling in a place where he didn’t saw before but her mom appeared in that place and talk to him and said “I know you’ve been missing me for so long, Andrew. I don’t want to see you in pain and in agony. If only I am there, you wouldn’t end up that way. If you want to meet your father, continue traveling. You can not only find your father but you will also find yourself and your true purpose.”

He woke up finds himself crying a river. He then once asked himself, “what is my purpose here?”. He tried to navigate all the things he wanted to settle in his life. He then decided to traverse the place where he once went, the remote village of Suyo. He then prepares all the necessary things that he should bring. Before he goes, in a massive bag, he prepares all the things that will help him traverse the remote village. There is hearsay that when you reached the peak of the mountain, all your questions in your life will be answered and all the things that you will ask will be given.

One fine morning he then decided to traverse the village. Before he goes, he saw a small chapel and prayed and asked guidance and protection from the Lord that throughout his journey, he will persevere and conquer everything that he wanted to claim. He started walking from the city and began to take the road which will be different than usual. He lived his life for 20 years in an urban place where in his everyday life he only saw people, but this time it’s different. He will meet unusual creatures. According to the old people that Andrew heard, there are monsters living in the shallow, narrow, and dark road towards the remote village. On his way to the village, he asked an old man if he knew a shortcut road for the village and the old man replied, “Wag mong susubukan, Iho. Marami na ang nagbalak pumunta pero walang nakabalik.” Andrew was shocked from what he heard. Andrew was not used to Filipino language because he was not used to it. He came from a rich wealthy family that’s why his education was taken at Brent International School where the medium of teaching was English and they used Filipino rarely.

After the talk with the old man, he had a second thought whether he will continue the journey or not. But suddenly, something appeared in his naked eye. A bright firefly was astonished his vision. He remembers what happen during his dream that her mom appeared with different bright fireflies. He then said to himself, “I will continue this journey no matter what happens. I’ll pursue this dream that I always wanted to achieve. I want to have answer to my questions. I want to where is my father now.” These are the thoughts that came to his mind that validated his eagerness to continue.

The journey was not easy for Andrew because he wasn’t trained well. He just trained himself for 3 months before he decided to take the voyage. He will traverse 3 mountains and 2 rivers with various creatures. Some are deadly and some will give him a hand to finish the journey. He then began the journey and he met this old lady in the road. The old lady talked to him and said, “Ayaw eunt agto kung ano man ing ginabalak ngaron to” Andrew was so intelligent that he can learn the Filipino language easily. He replied, “Ano po ang ibig niyong sabihin Lola?”. The old woman glared at him like she didn’t want to be questioned. After that incident, in a blink of an eye, the old woman vanished from her sight. He continued his journey and he reached the foot of the mountain named “Sangbay” which means “Welcome” in English. They said that this mountain was full of surprises. One thing is certain, he is determined on his journey without being confused by any circumstances.

As he walked towards the mountain high, he felt different in the road. The sky became dark and it feels like it might rain. The wind was so strong and he was struggling to walk. He saw a light in the narrow path and he followed it as if he thinks that it’s a sign that he will take. Against the strong wind, he continues his journey and the strong wind has stopped. The old woman who appeared at the foot of the mountain suddenly appeared to his vision again and talked to him, “Wow! You’re a brave young man. Because of your determination. Take this potion which gives you strength as you will face various creatures along your way. But once you move forward, you will no longer go back. It’s your future that is in your hand.” the old woman said. Then she bid her farewell as she disappeared in his plain sight. After that, he decided to traverse the mountain to reach the end of it and will conquer the next journey. He passed through the first mountain on his own. Andrew felt tired and set up his sleeping materials and prepare his meal for the night. After he had his dinner, he prayed then went to sleep.

The next morning, he woke up caused by a noise that came from the other side of the river. He remembered that there are still mountains to walk and river to cross so he then prepared himself for the next stage of his journey. To reach the village of Suyo, he must cross the river with crocodiles. He was scared and ambivalent because he doesn’t have any idea how to cross the river. Once more, he asked and prayed guidance from the Lord that he will provide strength and wisdom. After that time, he then thinks of a possible solution that he will do in order to cross the river. He remembered the potion that the old woman gave her. He took it out and drank half of the battle. After several minutes, the potion took effect. He felt strong and then he made a boat made from bamboo and he used it upon crossing the river. It was an easy task for him thanks to the potion that the old woman gave her. He now crossed the river and now he’s close to the village.

After crossing the river, the potion has still affected on his body, so to not waste the energy he then run towards the near mountain which served to be the second mountain that he will traverse. But this time, it was different. The mountain was named “Namnama” it’s an ancient word for hope. Andrew had high hopes that it would be an easy task since the name of the mountain was hope and he believed that everything was settled to be easy in spite of the things that comes in his way.

The moment he steps his foot at the mountain land, he was dimmed by the fact that the mountain is giving flashbacks and thoughts that only in his mind exist. He smells something sweet which makes him dizzy and felt asleep on the ground. He traveled the mountain inside his dream. Memories from his younger years appeared on it, some were happy and some are sad. Things were not perfect during those times. As he walks around the mountain, something dark appeared in the sky, that is her mom screaming and begging for help. He saw that someone was strangling her mother and it was the reason she died. Andrew was screaming in his dream but no voice was coming out. He begged for help but no one listens.

After that, the firefly that appeared in his first journey once appeared again in his dream. This time, he visualizes her mom smiling. Before he woke up, he saw himself killed by a man in a dark sight. He cannot see the place because it was pitch dark. After that, he woke up and the sun was hiding now in the west. He didn’t know what to do. He then asked himself again if he wanted to continue the journey or not but he remembered the words that the old woman said to him.

He picked himself and boldly said, “There’s no turning back. I need to see what really happened to my mother and find my father.” He prepared his beddings because the night is coming. He cannot sleep because of what he dreamed of. He kept awake because any moment, something will come at him and will kill him. So, he did prepare his armor and his sword with him. Fearless, his eyes were wide open for couple of hours until he heard some noise that makes him wide awake. It was the man that he saw in his dreams. So, he then prepares himself for the things that may happen. He followed the noise that the man did.

The man was trying to lure Andrew to the wild. Andrew was also strategic and intelligent because he believed that the man is trying to lure him in the dark wild. So, he waited him in a sight where the moonlight was present. He was afraid for his life because he doesn’t know what might happen if he will be killed at that time. Before he thinks of anything to save himself, the man shouted, “I will wait you to where you wanted to lead. I will be there standing at the gate. Farewell young man.” Then the voices of the man were vanished and Andrew was in great calm but left with unsolicited thoughts. He asked, “What was the man trying to employ?” He was left with so much questions but that doesn’t change the fact that his perseverance and determination was always there.

It was his third day of his journey and the next task was to cross the river again, but this time was different. It’s a river that has strong current that once you failed to navigate your boat you will be vanished and disappear in plain sight. This time, Andrew was afraid because he was running out of ideas and he thinks that he will not be able to made it to the end. But then again, he prayed and asked guidance from the Lord that he will be saved and will cross the river safely and alive. Things were being out of control. He cannot contemplate himself because he was there for almost three hours and yet he barely thinks of any solutions or ideas that he can do to traverse the river.

A group of man who’s half-naked saw him. The old man asked him, “Apay sadinno kadi ti papanam Apok? Mamaysa ka ditoy tingnga ti bantay. Di mo aya ammo nga delikado ditoy?” Andrew, out of nowhere, he was confused about what the man says. He replied, “Pasensya po kayo pero hindi ko po kayo naiintindihan.” The old man replied, “Kami ay naninirahan sa paanan ng gubat sa kabilang dako. Isa kaming tribo ng katutubong Pilipino. Bakit ka nandito?” Andrew replied hesitantly, “May gusto po akong marating at malaman.” The old man stopped asking question and help Andrew cross the river. The rivers water current was too strong and it needs a big boat to cross. Luckily, the group of man has it, they have big boat made from bamboo which they use it every time they cross the river. It was not hard for Andrew to finish this task because of the help of this tribe. He then gave his thank you and bid his farewell. Upon walking the old man said, “No aytoy man ti maudi nga aldaw mon, awan ti maaramidan mi ta iso ti kinayat mo ayta.” But since Andrew cannot understand any words he said, he just gave them a smile while they taking the other path of the mountain.

Andrew has now reached the last mountain before he will arrive at the village of Suyo. This mountain was too different from the other two mountains that he traverses. This mountain was darker and taller. It seems different because even in the middle of the day it seems like its like midnight because of the dullness of the area. Its time to conquer his fears, he prepared himself to enter the mountain and he did ask and prayed from the Lord guidance and strength to travel across the dark mountain. The mountain is called “Diablo” and it means “Demon” in English. There are different creatures that Andrew will be expecting to encounter, and for that, he prepared his armor and his sword.

Upon setting his foot at the mountain’s foot, a three headed dog appeared at his sight. The three headed dog name is “Cerberus”. It has red eyes, glaring at him and sharp teeth ready to eat Andrew. Andrew was scared but determine to fine the three headed dogs. He remembered that he still has a potion of strength but he decided not to drink it because he believed that there are still more powerful creatures that he may encounter on the road.

He finds a place where he can cut the head of Cerberus. He finds a small hole and entered there. Andrew shouted and Cerberus immediately went to the place where Andrew is located. Due to the narrow path, Cerberus was stock because of the force that Cerberus did. That’s the time that he cut the head of the three headed dog. He screamed for the happiness that he had. He cannot contemplate himself because it’s between life and death. He then leaves Cerberus dead.

He continues his journey to the mountain and when he reached the middle a flash of beautiful lady sparkled his eyes. The beautiful lady introduced herself, “Ako si Magayon ang tagapangasiwa ng kagubatang ito. Naninirahan na ako dito ng mahigit isang daang taon. Bakit ka naparito? Ano ang iyong pakay?” Andrew replied, “Nais ko lamang po na malaman ang mga kasagutan sa aking mga tanong na palaging nasa aking isipan.”

Magayon has power that she can read minds and she immediately read the mind of Andrew and he found out that he's not just an ordinary human, rather, he was just more than just human. But she didn’t say anything rather, she guided him until he reached the peak of the mountain where he found “Satanas” the unsolicited creature that lives in the mountain. He killed every human being that wanted to take the necklace at the peak of the mountain. The necklace was said to be powerful that gives you immunity from any danger. Satanas shouted and said, “Wala kang karapatan na pumarito. Isa ka lang na walang silbing tao at walang saysay ang iyong buhay. Nararapat sayo ay paslangin.”

Out of anger, Andrew was furious of what he heard. He believed that it’s the final battle before he reaches the village of Suyo. He drank the remaining half of the potion that the old lady gave her during the first day of his adventure. He felt stronger than usual, but before he run to kill Satanas, Satanas disappeared and appeared at the back of Andrew and kicked him with full force which led Andrew to hit the tree. He lost much strength on this, but he stands and still willing to fight. He said to himself that he travelled so far and this is not the time for him to give up. He grips into his sword and screamed like every creature in the mountain heard. His eyes were glaring and he run towards Satanas and he succeeded in beheading him. He took the necklace and wore it. Out of nowhere, the mountain changes its mood. The sky was not that dark as before. The flowers bloomed perfectly. It was colorful.

Magayon appeared to him and said, “You are the prodigy that the man said. You are the visitor that will save us from evil.” Then he continued his journey and now he reached the gate in the village of Suyo. Before he enters, people half-naked make a line and bow upon him. Andrew was confused as he continued to walk towards the village center. There he saw a man that is similar to the man he encountered during his journey. The old man and woman that Andrew saw was also there. Now, he is confused on what is happening. Upon reaching the man, he asked, “Where am I and who are you?” Before the man answered, he congratulates him for reaching his destination. “I know you’re here because you wanted an answer to your questions. I am the village leader, and the old man and woman that you saw are my parents.” the man said.

Andrew asked the man, “People says that you answer all questions. Can you answer all my questions?” The man replied yes and Andrew began asking question and he found out that his mother is not dead, it was planned to make him go home. The woman that she saw in their home was the old woman who shape-shifted to as his mother.

His mother appeared in his sight and he suddenly cried because he dearly missed his mother. The man said, you are not an ordinary person, you are a gift to us. You are the prodigy that saved us from evil. I am your father. I took good care of nature and preserves it because it’s the only place where we can live. You are not just a protector son. You are not just a visitor to this place but you are the heir of this village. These people are your people. Their future lies in your hand.

Andrew reunited with his family. He decided to traverse the village of Suyo just to have an answer to his questions but turns out that the village is the answer the he’s longing for. And that is how Andrew finds out that he’s not just an ordinary man.

Bumangon kan!

Aldaw ti Sabado ket sao manen nga sao ni Inang ko ta ado pay laeng dagiti banag nga kasapulan nga ilippas. ”Makapatitileng met ta ngaw-ngaw mo, Inang!” kinunak kenkuana. Siak laeng gamin ti nabatbati nga kadwa ni Inang ko ditoy balayen ta dagiti kabsat ko ket nangasawadan ken manmano da laengen nga sumangbay ditoy balay. Simple laeng ti panagbiag mi. Ti tatang ko ket pinanawan na kami di ubing kami ta simmurot ti sabali ta nagaramid ti baro na nga pamilya.

Ita ngarud, inagawaak nga inlippas dagiti bilin ni Inang tapno apanak agwalay kadwak dagiti barkadak. Ita nga Sabado,balakmi ti apan kuma agdidigus sadiay baybay ket nagpakada nak ken Inangko, ”Inang apan kami agdidigus kada Mario sadiay baybay, agawid nak to nu sardam ta addan to pay bassit get-together-mi”. Simmungbat ni Inang ko ket kunana, ”Anya ka metten Berto, agpakuyog nak kuma kenka nga apan aglaba sadiay karayan ket nagdagsen met dagitoy lupot nga nagado, sapay agsakit sakit toy patong ko. Umay ka ta itulod nak pay nga umuna sakbay nga apan dita kayat mo nga apanan.” Ket ngimmato ti tono ti timek ko nga kinuna, ”Anya metten Inang, kanayon lang metten nga no adda papanak sanak kulitin dagita ibabaonmo, nalpas ko lang ngaruden itattay dagita banag nga kasapulak nga ilippas”.
