one of the common bleach discussions is whether or not ichigo has a "goal" (where "goal" = a concrete, tangible end like a position or a title or even strength) and i guess you could make the argument that being strong enough to protect as many people as he can is a goal, but a hero's journey doesn't always have to have a tangible marker of the hero's success. to me, even if his outward goal is cookie-cutter "become strong enough to protect my friends," the narrative goal reads as coming to terms with grief, making peace with your place in the life cycle, and most importantly, making peace with death.

cfyow aside, it's been obvious as early as SS arc that the five noble families are corrupt. in a traditional sense, i suppose they are – they're wealthy, they uphold inequality, they have a huge say in what laws get made. but the way i read this series is always in connection to death and how characters relate to it. in star and a stray dog, renji and rukia's primary objective is to escape rukongai and live a better life in seireitei. however, you have to wonder: why is rukongai terrible in the first place? it's the afterlife, a place that is generally considered to be a place of peace and rest after you die in most cultures and religions. why, then, do people in rukongai suffer from mortal problems like poverty?

perhaps it's because rukongai is not meant to be sustainable for long-term living. it's meant to be a place where souls die, like a video game where every rule is made to set you up for failure (ie death). in a series like bleach, death in soul society means rebirth into the living world, which means, in a kind-of messed up way, that the souls that live there are supposed to die to feed the cycle of life. unless you have a tiny amount of spiritual power (for whatever reason), you are not a part of the chosen few that gets to stay in soul society. to the poor, civilian soul, soul society is just a pitstop. you could argue that we need shinigami because there needs to be some souls that will help usher/purify other souls and complete this transition. alright, cool.

however. if duty is the only reason some souls (shinigami) are allowed to live while others are "forced" back into the living world through rebirth, then what does this mean for the nobles? the nobles rarely die. rather, they reproduce. they have children. byakuya, ichika, yoruichi, yoruichi's brother, yamamoto's son, the list goes on...these are not people who died and entered soul society. they were born in the afterlife. to me, this paradox represents a fundamental fear that underscores the entire series: the fear of death. the nobles are greedy and constantly struggling to maintain power because they have a debilitating fear of the unknown, of death, of that gaping abyss that is designed to be unknowable until you enter it.

a long time ago, someone once said the living world and soul society are two sides of the same coin. when you enter soul society, you discard things like your name, your bonds in the living world, your personal possessions. you're like a shadow. however, even if a shadow is devoid of personal characteristics like your nose or your eyes, it retains your shape. ie, souls retain what is innate to human nature even when we lose everything else – a fear of death and a struggle for survival. the regular souls who embrace this fear will know that what's waiting for them on the other end is just. life. life in all its complexity and mundanity, in its pleasure and pain. but something about that transcience probably terrifies the nobles, who found a way to cheat death and instead do something that shouldn't be possible (create life). to me, this is possible because of the spiritual power and wealth they own. the quality of life is indeed better in seireitei than in rukongai, so people end up living in the afterlife....forever. i've joked to my friends before that if rebirth exists, i would never want it because i would never want to suffer again, never want to face the odds of an excruciating life again, never want to start over...all over again. funnily enough, i think this fear of suffering is what makes nobles prolong their lives while they send others to their "deaths," too. [however, death is not a bad thing and life, however temporary it is, is meaningful because of the bonds you make and the heart that grows between you and the people you love - thesis statement of the series]

how does this relate to ichigo and his "goal" as a protagonist? well. cut the convolutedness aside and his story has always been a story of grief and a story of identity. to ichigo, being unable to cope with masaki's death is what makes him see ghosts in the first place (also bc of the spiritual power he inherited ofc; we'll come to that). he resists death, becomes obsessed with it, becomes it. but in a way, being a shinigami teaches him about the transition process, the inevitability of life as a process. being able to open his eyes to the world he lives in, embrace all the parts of his soul, embrace his bonds, love openly even if it means his bonds might be temporary (they might die any time). ultimately he's an unnatural child, just like a noble. he's also a natural child, just like any civilian in the living world. in the end though, he chooses not to cheat death, not to fear it. he chooses the life of a civilian. he lives life knowing full well what it encompasses – the joy, the pain, the suffering. he has seen both sides of the coin and knows it's only natural. he comes to terms with his place in the cycle of life. he knows that his friends, his sisters, orihime, kazui, his job...none of these things are going to carry on over with him when he dies. but what he will carry is the heart he made through his bonds, which is metaphysical and exists beyond death, innately human and therefore inextinguishable in any plane of existence. what more could a guy ask for from his hero's journey?

insane how, at the heart of it, the arrancars were desperate and driven by an existential quest for meaning (which is why they joined up with aizen in the first place, sure), but their real ‘liberation’ comes from ichigo and his friends. or, a more accurate word would be evolution. the arrancars are a hellish species; their becoming is painful, and often not successful. after all, not everyone gets to make it from adjuchas to vasto lorde. evolution is a lonely process, and aizen manipulates them into thinking it’s a hungry, cruel, power-struggle too because. well. he needs their power and their existence is crucial for his mission with the hogyoku.

but, another thing about the arrancar is that they’re ‘hollows’ – strong ones, sure – with their masks removed. and with the exception of baraggan, most of them look remarkably human and it’s no coincidence that the major ones like grimmjow, ulquiorra and nel are ‘redeemed’ by ichigo and orihime’s humanity, loly and menoly are given another chance at survival. even shunsui’s fight versus starrk (painstakingly slow as it is), is a reluctant one.

the point i guess i’m trying to make is that some arrancars like grimmjow, harribel, loly, menoly and nel are able to survive this evolution process where they’re able to adapt to the ‘liberation’ they’re given, others choose to die (starrk) are killed (aaroneiro, yammy, baraggan, zommari) or are simply overwhelmed by the naked truth of existence and die out (ulquiorra). aizen encourages a ‘survival of the fittest’ evolution, while ichigo (and orihime!) encourage a survival of the friendliest one, where they appeal to the ‘human’ side of the arrancar’s DNA, if we can call it that. the process is so unsettling that you even see loly and menoly call orihime a monster for playing with the natural order of things, because in a world where you’re fighting everyone else to survive, seeing someone readily hand you a chance without conditions must seem downright abnormal. wrong. only gods mess with fate like that, but some people’s gods are other people’s monsters and at this point in canon, orihime is, to them, a monster for changing the course of evolution (something only aizen has done before). they’re a different species now, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. they can choose what they become, which is kind of what ichigo and orihime wanted for them in the first place – and look how that turned out! they’re (albeit reluctant) allies, who help ichigo and his friends in tybw! they survived the brutal, lonely agonizing evolution process after all.
