I've done gishwhes twice,and I always feel I don't do very well.I have a horrible habit of comparing myself to others and it takes away from the art I've created. Is there anyway to avoid this?

Actually, i think this is a good axiom in life: Don’t compare yourself to others, but do take inspiration from others. (Not bad, eh?) There was a time in my life when i measured myself against other people’s accomplishments. Then i realized that there’s always going to be lots of people better than me at everything. So i just stopped competing and it was liberating. It’s maybe easier said than done, but i think it’s kind of important. As for gishwhes, there’s always going to be someone that does an amazing rendition of a particular item, but the winning teams don’t usually have all of the most spectacular items. The great thing about gishwhes.com is it doesn’t require that you be a master at anything it just requires that you be game to do your best and to have your funnest. (Good word, eh?)

If you could change one thing in your life, would you? If so what would it be, and why?

I love to do more things that make me happy. That said, i also wish i could be more happy doing things i don’t love. There is always going to be work that is not fun or hard times. The trick is not resisting those times when they come.

Give LOVE Today

I nominate my sister Amy Thorman. @MishaHead Although she is struggling with many things, she always finds a way to give to others. In my deepest, darkest time in my life, it is Amy who always truly believed in me. She inspires me everyday with her strength, kindness, and will to make everyone else happy. She would give her last dime, her last meal, and her entire strength to help other people and make them smile. To my children, she is a wonderful aunt. Even though we live in Texas, she ALWAYS makes sure my children know how much she loves them. As a matter of fact, she hasn’t even met her youngest neice of whom she adores with no second thought, and my daughter adores her back!! She shows others that with strength, love, and kindness that you can climb any mountain, no matter how big. I nominate her because she truly is an angel in my eyes every day. Out of the three sisters I do have, she always let’s me know her love is unconditional. I hope she inspires others as much as she inspires me!♡

What. Is. Wayward?

So. I noticed this thing I’d like to address. (“Hello, thing, how would you like to be addressed? Uh, no, no I can’t bestow an honorary doctorate, so that’s probably not going to… ab-absolutely not, no, I’m sorry I can’t just… well, I’m not going to address you as Your Grace just because you want… no, no, look, this conversation has gotten awfully complicated for a joke that was just for my own amusement, so I’m gonna call it, alright? Okay. Yes, I heard, you said good day.”)

I took a step back and looked from an outside perspective. That’s when I noticed the thing.

The thing is, when I see lovely folks on the inter webs showing pictures of themselves and saying, “Look at me. I’m doing this! And - ” I have a reaction. It’s predictable and specific. In fact, at the risk of opening up another conversation with the voices in my head, it goes a little something like this:

SOMEONE WHO’S NOT ME: Look at me! I’m doing this! And -

ME: YEP! YA SURE ARE! FUCK RIGHT OFF NOW, SHOWOFF, THANKS SO MUCH.

Then I grab the Nutella and a smoothie straw.

(I am not PROUD of this reaction. It comes from my fear and insecurity, but not liking a truth doesn’t make it not the truth, and not liking how I feel doesn’t make me not feel it.)

Currently I am involved in a project that means I am one of the folks prancing around saying, “Look at me! I’m doing this! And-” Knowing what I know about myself, I am compelled to beg you to let me finish what comes after that “And -“ It is vitally important. At least to me. Yes. Look at me. I am doing this…

AND I WANT YOU TO JOIN ME!

I hear your slow blinking from where I’m sitting. “Kim. You want me to take my pants off for Nicaragua?”

No no no no no. Yes. Okay, yes, IF IT WOULD MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD! If you would feel saucy and sexy and “a wee bit naughty” and strong and silly and proud and unstoppable then YES! If it wouldn’t? Then no. I want you to join me in being who you want to be. I want you to make choices for you, not for what people will say about you. Pants or no pants. Pink hair or conservative bob. Cussing like a sailor or remarkably uncomfortable with the word “butt”. If it’s your truth, it’s right.

This thing we are doing, this Wayward Daughters, isn’t about exclusivity or an image. We want every single person who would like to be at the table to come sit. We can make room. We will always make room.

The same is true with not having money to buy a shirt. Wayward Daughters isn’t about a shirt. It’s not a club with a secret handshake. The shirts are a way of making change. They are just one way. They don’t make you Wayward.

How DO you get Wayward? My offhand suggestions: That challenge you want to try but scares you? Try it. That someone who does something you would never do? Support them anyway. That spark you think you’re not worth? Learn to believe you’re worth it. That smile you’re sure won’t be returned? Give it anyway. That person you want to help but you’re not sure how? Ask them. That “no” you keep hearing? Let it roll in one ear and out the other. That love you think won’t be returned if you release it out into the world? Let it fucking fly. SAY YES TO YOUR HEART.

And don’t judge the outcome. Any win is a huge win when it’s yours. There is victory in even the attempt at courage.

It is such bullshit that we live in a world where THAT is Wayward and unusual. But it’s awesome we can practice our own way of changing it. I’d love it if you shared your own ideas. I’m still learning too.
